Miscibility of small colloidal spheres with large polymers in good solvent.

Nearly athermal colloid-polymer mixtures were studied in the "protein limit." A fluid-fluid transition was observed in mixtures of stearyl-alcohol-coated silica particles and large polystyrene coils in toluene. The ratios of the polymer radius of gyration to the particle radii were q=4.1 and q=5.2. The binodal curves and the critical points were determined. Turbidity measurements and analysis for one set of particles allowed the systems to be mapped onto hard sphere-polymer mixtures. A comparison with recent predictions for the miscibility of model mixtures shows that the experimental binodals lie between the two extreme results for ideal and interacting polymers. The critical colloid volume fraction is also found to decrease with increasing size ratios.

Dynamics of core-shell particles in concentrated suspensions.

The dynamics of soft colloidal particles in a concentrated suspension was studied by two color dynamic light scattering. The short-time diffusion coefficient, D(s)(q), revealed a weak slowing down around the peak of S(q) in contrast to the much stronger dependence observed in hard sphere systems, and the absence of any slowing down in ultrasoft diblock micelles. The low-q limit of the diffusion coefficient, D(s)(q=0), reflecting the cooperative nature of the dynamics was found to decrease from its dilute limit value in contrast to the weak increase observed in hard sphere systems. The behavior of D(s)(q) reflects distinct polymer-layer-induced hydrodynamic effects present in concentrated suspensions of core-shell particles.

Structure formation from mesoscopic soft particles.

In this work, the aggregation of mesoscopic gel particles (soft colloids) has been experimentally investigated. The interaction between particles was controlled through the addition of salt, above the critical coagulation concentration, resulting in aggregation with finite bond energies. Attention has been paid to the structure of the clusters formed in the process as well as to the aggregation kinetics. The results indicate that the clusters are fractal and the kinetics of aggregation can be described through the dynamic scaling solution of the Smoluchowski equation. As the energy minimum increases in depth the resultant clusters pass from a very compact structure to typical diffusion-limited cluster aggregation (DLCA) fractal dimension values. In addition, the kinetics of growth change from those observed in reaction controlled aggregation to DLCA. These results can be explained within the framework of a reversible growth model, arising from the fact that aggregation takes place in an energy minimum of restricted depth. Moreover, they show that structure and kinetics decouple for such a soft sphere system, in contrast to what is encountered for DLCA and reaction-limited processes. Finally, an unexpected return to a reaction controlled aggregation kinetics was observed for sufficiently deep energy minima, which could be due to the polymerlike particularities of the soft particles considered in this work.
