Psychometric properties of the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) questionnaire in a Spanish psychiatric population.

OBJECTIVE: The psychometric properties of the Spanish version of Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) were examined in a psychiatric population. METHOD: Internal consistency, factor structure and concurrent validity were studied in a sample of 416 psychiatric patients. RESULTS: A moderate to high internal consistency for all personality dimensions was found, except for Persistence. A confirmatory factor analysis of the TCI performed at the subscale level revealed an uncertain factor structure. However, when analysed separately, both the 11 temperament subscales (plus Persistence) and the 13 character subscales shaped four and three factors, respectively, in agreement with the biosocial model of personality. Finally, concurrent validity analyses were conducted using EPQ, SPSR and SSS questionnaires showing results consistent with theory. CONCLUSION: The Spanish version of the TCI is a reliable and valid instrument, although the Persistence dimension might require further revision.

Somatotype in panic patients.

The aim of the study was to test whether an association exists between asthenic somatotype, as measured by the Quetelet index, and panic and or agoraphobia. Ninety-nine cases with panic and/or agoraphobia diagnosed at the psychiatric outpatient clinic of a general teaching hospital were compared to 99 controls with psychiatric conditions other than panic and agoraphobia, and to 64 medical controls, matched by age and gender. No differences in weight, height and raw Quetelet and ponderal indexes were found between panic cases and controls. However, 33.3% of cases, but only 19.2% of psychiatric controls and 18.7% of medical controls, were in the asthenic group as defined by the lower quartile of the Quetelet index (age and sex adjusted odds ratio = 2.33, 95% C.I.: 1.21-4.11). In the entire sample, the asthenic somatotype was associated with lower age and with the presence of hypermobility of joints. Since both panic disorder and mitral valve prolapse may be associated with the joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS), an inherited disorder of collagen synthesis, it is suggested that the relationship found between panic and asthenic somatotype might be mediated through JHS.

[Cognitive evoked potentials in the hyperactivity attention deficit disorder].

INTRODUCTION: The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is characterized by deficient attention, impulsiveness and excessive motor activity. The incidence is estimated between 5 and 9% of children of school age. The P300 wave is one of the cognitive components of the event related potential ( ERP) that is more used to investigate the attention and the cognitive processes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the information processing in children with ADHD predominantly inattentive type by means of the visual and auditory P300 component. PATIENTS AND METHODS: P300 wave using an auditory and visual oddball paradigm were recorded in 18 children with ADHD and in 18 normal children ( control group ). RESULTS: We found differences in reaction time and in the percentage of errors between children with ADHD and between controls. In the ADHD the latency of the auditory and visual P300 were significantly longer than in the control group, and the amplitude of both components were significantly smaller in the ADHD group than in controls. We didn t found differences in the cortical distribution of the P300 between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggests that there is an abnormal processing of cognitive information in children with ADHD predominantly inattentives and a dysfunction in attentional mechanisms.
