Mycoplasma hominis septicaemia occurred in a patient with a malignant lymphoma of lymphoblastic type in leukaemic phase. M hominis was isolated several times from blood cultures with antibody titres against the micro-organism rising to a high level despite severe immunosuppression. M hominis was detected in the blood after subculture of the blood culture bottles despite their macroscopically normal appearance. The patient's pyrexia resolved without treatment with antibiotics effective against M hominis.
The prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection of the cervix uteri and its possible association with postabortal pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) were investigated in women subjected to first-trimester-induced abortion. None of the women had signs or symptoms of genital infection at the time of abortion. Chlamydia organisms were isolated from the cervix/urethra in 33 (10%) of 333 women. Women with a positive Chlamydia culture were comparable to women with a negative culture in regard to gestational age at the time of abortion. However, Chlamydia-positive women were significantly younger and had gonorrhea more often than Chlamydia-negative women. Two hundred seventy (81%) of the women were followed up 1 month after the abortion. Thirty-two of these developed postabortal PID. Eight (28%) of 29 women with a positive Chlamydia culture and 24 (10%) of 241 women with a negative culture developed postabortal PID. This difference is significant (P less than .025) and indicates that the presence of Chlamydia in the cervical canal at the time of abortion in asymptomatic women increases the risk of postabortal PID.

Taurine and related neurally active metabolites, were tested for their ability to influence basal secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). The animal model used was the unanesthetized, unrestrained adult rat with an indwelling catheter in the jugular vein and a cannula implanted in the right lateral cerebroventricle or anterior pituitary. The proposed inhibitory neurotransmitter traurine, and its metabolic precursor, hypotaurine, did not affect the secretion of LH or FSH following infusion of 0.2 or 2.0 mumol intraventricularly or into the pituitary. In contrast, intraventricular injection of cysteic acid, a neurally excitant amino acid, in doses of 2.0 and 0.2 mumol promoted pituitary secretion of LH in both male and female rats. FSH secretion was also increased slightly by cysteic acid (2.0 mumol). These studies provide additional evidence that excitatory amino acids have a stimulatory role in the release of pituitary gonadotropins.

The neurally depressant amino acid taurine and related metabolites were tested for their ability to alter prolactin (PRL) secretion in conscious, unrestrained male rats. The intraventricular infusion of taurine (0.2 and 2.0 mumol) elicited a significant increase in PRL secretion. Hypotaurine (0.2 and 2.0 mumol), cysteic acid (2.0 mumol), mannitol (2.0 mumol) and 0.9% saline were ineffective in altering PRL secretion. When infused directly into the pituitary of conscious, unrestrained male rats none of the substances tested stimulated PRL secretion. Taurine (50.0 mumol) was similarly ineffective in stimulating PRL secretion when an in vitro pituitary preparation was used. These studies indicate that taurine is capable of stimulating PRL secretion in the male rat. This effect appears to be mediated centrally, presumably at the hypothalamus.
L-lysine has an inhibitory effect on the multiplication of herpes simplex virus in cell cultures. We have evaluated the prophylactic effect of L-lysine monohydrochloride 1000 mg daily on recurrent herpes simplex labialis in 65 patients in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study. After 12 weeks of lysine treatment the patients shifted to placebo treatment for a similar period. On the whole, lysine prophylaxis had no effect on the recurrence rate of herpes simplex. However, significantly more patients were recurrence-free during lysine than during placebo treatment (p = 0.05), suggesting that certain patients may benefit from prophylactic lysine administration. In the herpes lesions described, lysine had no effect on the rate of healing or on the appearance of the lesions at their worst.

In order to characterize cefuroxime resistance in Escherichia coli 22 clinical isolates were investigated for susceptibility to different beta-lactam antibiotics and ciprofloxacin. The production of beta-lactamases, the pattern of the major outer membrane proteins (OMPs), and the plasmid profiles were determined for these isolates. Ten of the isolates were resistant to ceftazidime, two to cefotaxime, and none was resistant to imipenem or ciprofloxacin. The dominating resistance mechanism was hyperproduction of the chromosomally encoded beta-lactamase to some extent accompanied by alterations of the OMP's. Two isolates with low ampicillin MIOs seemed solely to have alteration of the OMPs. None of the isolates produced plasmid-mediated extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. In addition, the prevalence of cefuroxime resistance was investigated. The prevalence as attained in 8704 clinical isolates of E. coli collected from Copenhagen County during a 5-year period (1990-1994) was 4.4%, but there was considerable variation among specimens from different sites of the body. Isolates from blood were much less resistant (2.5%) than isolates from the respiratory tract (9.7%).
Monosymptomatic delusion of infestation (parasitosis) occur in idiopathic psychoses but have rarely been observed in patients with neurologic or systemic illnesses. A patient was observed in whom the delusion occurred in the presence of demonstrable cerebrovascular disease. The delusional symptoms were contralateral to the principal site of ischemic injury. Delusions of infestation may reflect an acquired neurologic or metabolic disorder, and medical and neurologic evaluation should be pursued in elderly patients presenting with this syndrome.
