[Electronic thrombocyte count from total blood].

Platelets were simultaneously counted in 52 persons by the conventional method of Cronkite and Brecher and with a new electronic cell volume analyser. The platelet counts estimated by the electronic analyser were 10% lower than that measured with the conventional method. This difference decreased to 1.5% when the same diluent was used for both methods. The described electronic counting method of platelets in whole blood is a simple procedure, which gives well reproducible and exact results.

Labyrinthine anomalies in trisomy 13 mosaicism.

The temporal bone histopathology of a 2-month-old male with a bilateral cleft palate, cleft lip and polydactylia due to trisomy 13 mosaicism was studied. Anomalies in the ear involved a partial absence of the superior semicircular canal, an abnormally wide lateral semicircular canal, underdeveloped cochlear coils, an abnormally broad modiolus, an undeveloped organ of Corti and an underdeveloped basilar membrane in the basal turn of the cochlea, an unusually wide cochlear aqueduct, and deformed stapedial crura.

[Electrogastrographic studies in patients with gastric and duodenal ulcer].

The establishment of the motor activity of the gastrointestinal tract is difficult to be performed. The method of electrogastroenterography gives an evidence through an indirect registration of the summation vectors of the action potential. In patients with ventricular ulcer a statistically certain retardation of the changes of the potential/min. in comparison to a control group is to be proved. In patients with duodenal ulcer in the same way a trend is to be observed. It is especially referred to the importance of these examination methods in the sense of examinations of the course of the disease.

The diagnostic correlator: an endodontic teaching device.

A chart is proposed as an aid to assist students and practitioners to correlate clinical information and arrive at an accurate endodontic diagnosis. A brief description of current displays, the clinical examination, and an endodontic disease classification is given. A discussion and examples of how to use the chart are presented. The chart has been found to be a useful teaching aid.

Affinity elution of pyruvate kinase from phosphocellulose.

Pyruvate kinase from ascites tumour cells can be eluted from phosphocellulose by very low concentrations of phosphoenolpyruvate, fructose 1,6-bisphosphate, adenosine 5'-diphosphate and pyrophosphate, respectively. The appropriate limiting conditions for "facilitated desorption" of the enzyme from phosphocellulose by these ligands have been elaborated for achieving maximum selectivity and recovery in the process of its purification. This method has been designated as "affinity elution chromatography" owing to the specific interactions between a ligand as a constituent of the eluting medium with the adsorbed enzyme, which causes its selective desorption from the ion-exchanger. Affinity elution with phosphoenolpyruvate has been found to be very effective for preparation of the M-types of pyruvate kinase. A specific activity of 420 for an almost homogeneous preparation of pyruvate kinase from ascites tumour cells has maximally been obtained.

Creating a substance abuse network in family medicine: lessons learned.

Family practice was one of several primary care specialties awarded federal contracts in 1985 to survey substance abuse training needs. Family medicine has since excelled in creating a viable substance abuse network. Key events were the sponsorship of a fellowship program, the formation of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Substance Abuse Working Group, and the working group's pursuit of externally funded projects. Tangible measures of the network's success include collective funding exceeding $7.3 million, an increase in the number of substance abuse activities at annual STFM conferences, and a nearly four-fold growth in the group's membership and collaborative publications. Key factors underlying the vitality of the network that may be generalizable include: 1) initial emphasis on training family physician faculty; 2) making optimal use of the existing administrative channels within STFM; 3) acquisition of external funding; 4) some continuity of core persons working together; 5) active networking within and outside family medicine; and 6) promotion of individual success.

[Speech illusions and their significance for aviation and space flight practice].

The pattern of erroneous perception of intelligible and incoherent words accompanied by loud noise has been investigated. It has been found that proper interpretation of incoherent words depends at large on their rhythmic, or syllabic structure. As a rule, the words are reconstructed in the back-to-forward direction. One- and two-syllable words with predominant median and low frequencies are those which are most frequently subjected to speech illusions.
