Heteromorphic grade of renal cell cancer.

The present study demonstrates by means of histopathologic analysis that most of the renal adenocarcinomas are microscopically heterogeneous--named by authors as heteromorphic. This heteromorphism means the mixture of different cell types, histological patterns and fields of tumor with different nuclear atypia. 300 surgical specimens of renal cell cancer (RCC) were reclassified retrospectively. The histologic classification was as follows: 1. Nuclear atypia (nuclear grading according to Skinner); 2. Histological structure (compact, tubular, papillary, cystic); 3. Tumor cell types (clear, chromophobe, chromophilic basophilic, chromophilic eosinophilic). Homogeneous tumors consist of the three categories of this basic classifications. Heteromorphic tumors have combinations the three categories: different cell types (clear and granular) and/or histological elements (tubulo-papillary) and/or nuclear structure. Heteromorphism of RCC can be graded as: G-I: homogeneous structure (three patterns, one-one pattern of the three categories; G-II: 3 + 1 patterns.... G-III: 3 + 2 patterns.... G-IV: 3 + 3 or more patterns of the classification given above. This grading system is recommended for the heteromorphism of renal adenocarcinomas.

A contribution to the pathology and clinical features of granulomatous prostatitis.

Two cases of granulomatous prostatitis are reported. The essential pathological and clinical features of the syndrome are discussed. It is emphasized that in case of enlargement and induration of the prostate and fusion of the organ with adjacent structures, differentiation of granulomatous prostatitis from prostatic cancer is not possible without biopsy.

[Correlation between the placental surface and the maturity of the newborn].

Morphometrical method of determination of the surface of the vili of placenta is described. The average of the surface of placental vili in normal pregnancy appeared to be - 12,14 +/- 2,27 m2. This valued in toxaemia of pregnancy - 9,25 +/- 1,52 m2, and in cases of dismaturation 7,62 +/- 0,98 m2. It was established that the morphometrical method was sensitive and suitable for the study of the relationship between the surface of the placenta and intrauterine development of the foetus. This was evidenced by the fact that surface of the placenta of low weight newborns (10-25%) and that of the newborns with overweight (75%) had shown a significant difference. These findings are not in accordance with the data reported in the literature.

[Pathomechanisms of Reinke edema].

Reinke's oedema is a characteristic process of a limited part of vocal cords, margins of them. In the development of it local injury of vessel walls, increase of the permeability play a part. Why fluid entering from vessels into the tissues of vocal cords does not flow back can be explained by the peculiar anatomic structure and lymph circulation of the Reinke's space. Dyskeratic changes of the epithelium covering the organized oedema are of secondary type. They are not followed by increased mitotic activity of basal and parabasal cells.

Lymphocyte activation and the increase of nuclear birefringence.

Nuclear birefringence of neutral red or rivanol stained cell suspensions from rat spleen has been investigated. Polyclonal or monoclonal mitogens produced an increased birefringence of the nucleus following 30 min in vitro stimulation at 37 degrees C. The nuclear birefringence increased by 62.2% [p less than 0.001], when the cells were incubated in the supernatants of a previously phytohemaglutinin stimulated culture. Amantadine, a potent phytohemagglutinin inhibitor, was unable to prevent the effect of the supernatant, but heating for 1 h at 56 degrees C destroyed its activity. The results suggest that increase in nuclear birefringence is mediated by a soluble factor which is released in the course of lymphocyte activation. The nuclear birefringence of surviving cells from human spleens obtained within 6 to 24 h post mortem increases after in vitro stimulation.

Histological findings in infantile otoantritis.

The histopathological findings in the granulation tissue removed at mastoidectomy from 34 infants between 1971 and 1974 are described. Granulation tissue was present in every case, characterized by the histological features of chronic inflammation and fibrosis (sclerosis), although the process was of short duration. The great number of thick fibers was a surprising finding. To prevent fibrosis (sclerosis) to develop later on, it is advisable to operate as early as indicated.
