Recreational multifamily therapy for troubled children.

Recreation-based family groups were formed as modalities in the treatment of school-age children enrolled at a day treatment center and of preschoolers with potential for enrollment. The groups, which had psychoeducational and self-help components, were successful in involving hitherto unwilling parents in their children's treatment, in helping them acquire parenting skills, and in reducing family conflict.

[Vaccination against measles at 6 months of age].

Measles immunization with the Edmonston Zagreb stain was carried out in 71 six-month-old infants. Proportions of subjects with immunity were 91% among the 47 subjects retested before one year of age and 100% among the 28 subjects retested between two and three years of age. These results support the WHO recommendation that measles immunization should be given at the age of six months. The concerns expressed by some about possible adverse effects of early measles immunization (decreased immune defenses) are discussed, as well as the transfer of maternal antibodies and persistence of these antibodies in the child. The obstacles to such studies in developing countries, including the need for repeated phlebotomies with centrifugation of specimens and freezing of sera, could be circumvented by the use of filter paper dried blood spot samples which seem to provide reliable results although with values somewhat lower than those found in frozen sera.

[Case of early hydrocephalus in mucopolysaccharidosis type 1].

One mucopolysaccharidosis I-H (Hurler's Syndrome) found in 3 months infant, was complicated with an hydrocephalus at the age of 5 months. If macrocephaly is known in several genetic inborn errors of metabolism, specially in the different mucopolysaccharidosis, hydrocephalus is quite more rare. It is probably communicating and due to accumulation of storage material in the piaarachnoid causing an impairment in CSF absorption. It occurs in the evolution of the disease and the reported cases concern only older children; our case is special by the early beginning of hydrocephalus.

[Role of family socio-cultural factors in school problems].

The authors analyse the factors of early school failures by studying two groups of children: one of staying down children, the other of children sent in special classes (classes de perfectionnement). In these two studies the situation is matched to control groups. The authors confirm the importance of the socio-economic factors which exist before school entrance and could be screened at the entrance in kindergarten at 3 years-old and even sooner. It is difficult to fight against these factors, but this seems more important than to modify course of studies.
