Tricyclic antidepressant binding to lymphocyte membranes and changes during depression.

The binding of [3H]imipramine, its 2- and 4-nitroderivatives and [3H]desmethylimipramine to lymphocyte membranes was determined. IC50 values for drugs and neurotransmitters to inhibit [3H]imipramine binding to lymphocyte membranes were comparable with those for brain and thrombocyte membranes. The number of [3H]imipramine and [3H]desmethylimipramine binding sites increased in depressive patients, whereas the dissociation constants remained unchanged.

Vitamin A (retinol) level in colon and lung cancer patient sera.

Serum vitamin A (retinol) level was determined in colon and lung cancer patients. As a control served young healthy people and non cancer hospital patients at the age similar to those with tumors. Vitamin A content in cancer patients was found to be statistically lower as compared to control groups.

Effect of piracetam on extrapyramidal side effects induced by neuroleptic drugs.

In a double-blind crossover placebo controlled trial the effectivity of piracetam in neuroleptic-induced extrapyramidal side effects was confirmed. 40 psychotic patients treated with neuroleptics in an average daily dose equal to 600 mg of chlorpromazine were included in this study. Akathisia, tremor, muscle rigidity and dyskinesia were evaluated on a 4-point scale. The patients were randomly divided into two subgroups--40 g of piracetam or placebo from identic ampoules were given i.v. with a crossover readministration after 60 min. The intensity of the extrapyramidal side effects was evaluated at 30-min intervals during 2 h. Piracetam was proved to be significantly effective in both subgroups, the onset of its action being between 30 and 60 min after i.v. administration. Possible interpretations of the observed piracetam effectivity are considered. Further trials with piracetam in neurologic complications during neuroleptic treatment, tardive dyskinesia included, are suggested.

The estimation of velocity distribution profile of Paramecium cytoplasmic streaming.

Cytoplasmic streaming of Paramecium bursaria and Paramecium tetraurelia was investigated by cinematographic techniques. Analysis of the records reveals the paraboidal character of the velocity distribution profiles in all arbitrarily chosen zones along the whole route of moving cytoplasm in the cell. According to the date obtained from cytoplasmic streaming analysis and food vacuole path, the geometry of the "channel" was described in terms of ellipsoid axes. Total volume changes of cytoplasm flowing through a given cross section in a given time unit were computed and no significant differences were found. The participation of a pressure gradient in motive force generation in cytoplasmic streaming is discussed.

Long-term results of ureterosigmoidostomy for ectopia vesicae.

Ureterosigmoidostomy was performed on 31 children with ectopia vesicae between 1941 and 1964. Two of the children died as a result of the operation and 25 of the remaining 29 were followed up in detail. Contrary to what is sometimes believed, the long-term results leave much to be desired, whether a Coffey or a Mathisen technique is used. Only four of the patients are perfectly normal, but here the end result is very good indeed. The remaining patients suffer from moderate to severe complications or are incontinent or both. It is essential that after ureterosigmoidostomy the patients are carefully followed up for the rest of their lives.

[Surgical preparation planning of hemodialysis candidates].

An early beginning of chronic hemodialysis is postulated to prevent dangerous uremic complications. Subcutaneous arteriovenous fistulas or autologous saphenous vein grafts in cases where multiple attempts to create a sufficiently functioning arteriovenous fistula have failed turned out to be the best procedures to obtain a suitable access to the blood vessels. The problems arising on a total of 57 patients to get an adequate blood flow by the time of first hemodialysis are discussed.
