Erythrocyte sedimentation rate in glass and plastic pipettes.

In the blood collection practice there is a growing number of different closed systems. They often use plastic pipettes for testing the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) according to Westergren. Our previous experience with plastic pipettes as a part of the system Venoject II suggested that slightly higher values were obtained when compared to glass pipettes. In order to confirm these findings a special comparative trial was performed in a group of 302 blood samples. Statistical evaluation proved a significantly higher sedimentation rate in plastic pipettes. Based on the values from another group of 132 healthy adults we try to draw conclusions on the reference interval of ESR in plastic pipettes. We confirmed that no additional information can be derived from ESR values after two hours.

[Serum beta-2-microglobulin in breast carcinoma].

By including biochemical examinations in routine practice possible early detection of tumours is enhanced. In the submitted paper the authors assessed by radioimmunoassay beta-2-microglobulin in serum of patients with mammary tumours. In mammary cancer elevated values were recorded in 42%.

Laboratory detection of the early stages of diabetic nephropathy.

Three laboratory indicators of impaired renal function (microalbuminuria (MA), N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (NAG), beta-2-microglobulinaemia (beta-2-M)) were studied in sixty diabetics of type 1. 10 times higher MA levels were found in a subgroup of diabetics with identifiable diabetic retinopathy (DR). In a subgroup of diabetics with normal values of excreted albumin the mean MA value was significantly higher than in those who had already contracted DR. Pathological levels of NAG and beta-2-M were mostly seen in those patients who also had pathological MA results. In only four cases were increased NAG or beta-2-M values as the first and only pathological parameter indicative of possible renal involvement due to diabetic nephropathy.

[Oxytocinase in pregnancy complications].

Using a simpler method for cystylaminopeptidase (oxytocinase) investigation modified by means of p-nitranilide the oxytocinase activity was examined in blood serum of 51 pregnant women with complicated pregnancy in the period of week 31-34 of gestation. Lower oxytocinase values were found in women with complicated course of pregnancy compared to those in women with physiological course of pregnancy and the same gestational age. Significantly low oxytocinase activity values were established in pregnant women with preterm uterine activity. A significant variability was found in the whole group of 51 women with complicated pregnancy as well as in individual groups.

[Cystyl aminopeptidase during normal pregnancy].

Activity of cystylaminopeptidase (CAP) was established repeatedly in the blood serum of 40 healthy women since the 14th to the 37th week of pregnancy by means of method using S-benzyl-L-cystein-p-nitranilid as substrate. Continuous increase of values was observed, more moderate up to the 28th week, later sheerer, with a certain dispersion in examination of different women in the same length of pregnancy. No statistically significant dependency was found out by evaluating different influences on the CAP activity (weight, length, and sex of the infant, time of gestation and age of mother at delivery). Interindividual differences in the CAP activity are significantly higher than differences individually evaluated in the course of pregnancy.
