This work concentrates on a single procedure, namely hybridizing Southern blots with nonradioactive probes. Stress is placed on features of the procedures where attention to detail is necessary to obtain strong signals and clear background. Some indications are given to the future development of the technology.

Two hundred and eighty two patients aged sixty-five or over were screened for biochemical evidence of osteomalacia using a modified metabolic bone index. 5.2% showed classical biochemical features of the disorder. As osteomalacia is an important but under-recognised condition in the elderly, this simple biochemical method may be suitable for general identification of patients at risk.
Hand function and intelligence were evaluated in 82 spina bifida cystica patients, aged 9 to 20 years. The patients required significantly more time to complete hand function tests and had significantly lower IQs than the test standardization populations. Inverse relationships were found between hand function times and IQ scores; patients with lower IQs (especially those with IQ scores less than 80) took significantly longer to complete the hand function tests. Patients with three or more shunt operations for correction of hydrocephalus required more time to complete the hand function tests and had lower IQs than patients with no shunt operations. Patients with higher level spinal cord deficits (particularly those with thoracic level lesions) required more time to complete the hand functions tests and had significantly lower IQ scores than patients with lower level lesions.

Experience with a semi-automated L. casei folate assay using a chloramphenicol-resistant strain of organism is described. Control of pH of medium and incubation time was required. The normal range for serum folate was 2 to 16 ng/ml and red cell folate 200 to 600 ng/ml.
