Treatment of retrocaval ureter.

Retrocaval ureter is a developmental anomaly of the course of the ureter in relation to the inferior vena cava. In spite of the fact the pathophysiological consequences of this anomaly are very serious, clinical manifestations are relatively poor. Experience with the management of this disorder in our 4 patients justifies the therapy we applied. It involves resection of a part of the ureter running behind the inferior vena cava, transposition of the ureter and subsequent end-to-end anastomosis of both parts of the ureter or of the ureter directly with the pelvis. The results verified at postoperative check-up examinations were very good, demonstrating the correctness of the tactics and procedure used.

Urolithiasis in childhood.

On the basis of epidemiological study in closed children's population of Bratislava (350 000 inhabitants, out of them 70 000 children) the conclusions about falling urolithiasis incidence in children of urban population are drawn. Analysis and clinical evaluations of 287 children's patients with urolithiasis shows that in solitary calculi (in partial casts as well) the results of treatment are very good, repeated recurrences are rare. The results are considerably worse in multiple and great staghorn stones. The importance of first surgical treatment, in which all stones should be removed, as well as principles of both general and specific treatment in relationship with stone composition and metabolic disturbances are stressed.

[Hemodynamics of the liver. II. Hemodynamics of the dog liver after resection of 70% of the liver and ligation of the left branch of the portal vein].

Blood supply to the liver was determined by help of the direct method after 70 per cent hepatic resection and after ligation of the left branch of portal vein in dogs. The total blood supply remains unchanged after both surgical procedures, while the circulation in the remaining lobes, resp. in those patent for portal blood stream, considerably increases. After the resection portal hypertension develops. This elevated portal pressure was not observed after ligation of the left portal branch.
