Long-range reactive dynamics in myoglobin.

We report the complete vibrational spectrum of the probe nucleus 57Fe at the oxygen-binding site of the protein myoglobin. The Fe-pyrrole nitrogen stretching modes of the heme group, identified here, probe asymmetric interactions with the protein environment. Collective oscillations of the polypeptide, rather than localized heme vibrations, dominate the low frequency region. We conclude that the heme "doming" mode is significantly delocalized, so that distant sites respond to oxygen binding on vibrational time scales. This has ramifications for understanding long-range interactions in biomolecules, such as those that mediate cooperativity in allosteric proteins.

Mouse germline restriction of Oct4 expression by germ cell nuclear factor.

The POU-domain transcription factor Oct4 is essential for the maintenance of the mammalian germline. In this study, we show that the germ cell nuclear factor (GCNF), an orphan nuclear receptor, represses Oct4 gene activity by specifically binding within the proximal promoter. GCNF expression inversely correlates with Oct4 expression in differentiating embryonal cells. GCNF overexpression in embryonal cells represses Oct4 gene and transgene activities, and we establish a link to transcriptional corepressors mediating repression by GCNF. In GCNF-deficient mouse embryos, Oct4 expression is no longer restricted to the germ cell lineage after gastrulation. Our studies suggest that GCNF is critical in repressing Oct4 gene activity as pluripotent stem cells differentiate and in confining Oct4 expression to the germline.

gamma-Ray wavelength standard for atomic scales.

The wavelength of the 57Fe Mössbauer radiation is measured with a relative uncertainty of 0.19 ppm by using almost exact Bragg backscattering from a reference silicon crystal. Its value is determined as lambda(M) = 0.860 254 74(16)x10(-10) m. The corresponding Mössbauer photon energy is E(M) = 14 412.497(3) eV. The wavelength of the 57Fe Mössbauer radiation is easily reproducible with an accuracy of at least 10(-11)lambda(M) and could be used as a length standard of atomic dimensions.

Optical sensor arrays for odor recognition.

Optical sensor arrays containing fluorescent solvatochromatic dyes immobilized in a plurality of polymers generate information-rich responses upon exposure to organic vapors. The response profiles are used to train a variety of computational networks such that subsequent exposure of the array to the vapors enables them to be classified and/or quantified. A number of strategies can be taken to enhance sensitivity and to increase sensor diversity.

Education of staff and students in health care settings: integrating practice and research.

A cooperative program between the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) Department of Social Service (DSS) and the University of Iowa School of Social Work (UISSW) integrates faculty and students with clinicians for both practice and/or research internships. This program has endeavored to enhance practice and research social work through the development of (1) multiple student training programs offering both practice and research placement opportunities, (2) a jointly appointed faculty position between the UISSW and the UIHC DSS designed to improve researchers' access to and involvement with practice and practitioners' involvement in practice research, and (3) specialized student training programs including research projects in practice specialties. This project has helped clinicians conduct research, provided students with practical research experience within a clinical setting, and has increased the likelihood that both staff and students will participate in research.

[Anticipation by schizophrenics (1)].

Man is forever constructing his future. It is this essential phenomenon that the author studies, calling it anticipation. With schizophrenic patients, anticipation does not disappear, it alters, deviates and can no more continue its regulating and motioning functions. In "delusive" forms or stages (the so-called productive moments, with intense processing activity), the real world is overthrown, subverted, and anticipation which has lost its spatial and temporal references, is dissipated in incoherent constructions. In simple schizophrenia or hebephrenia, the anticipation in reality is felt to be dangerous, obliterated by anxiety: autism sets up a mode of protected anticipation: apparent emptiness, delimitation of a security area or imaginary construction of the paraphrenic type. Psychotherapy, as an indispensable complement to chemotherapy, should be guided according to these different types of anticipation.

Monoamniotic twins: antenatal diagnosis and management.

Confident prenatal diagnosis of monoamniotic twins permits timed elective delivery, thereby reducing the risk of perinatal loss. In this report serial dynamic ultrasound fetal assessment and amniography were used to confirm this diagnosis and guide management to a successful outcome.

[Locally aggressive fibrous histiocytoma of the external ear canal].

This article reports on clinical as well as light-microscopical and electron-microscopical findings in a fibrous histiocytoma of the left external auditory canal. The patient, who was then 67 years old, complained of a space-occupying mass in the external auditory canal which resulted in partial deafness. On microscopical examination a 3 x 2 cm large tumour was found to be located at the boundary between the osseous and the cartilaginous auditory canal. The covering skin was intact. On histological examination we identified a moderately cellular, locally aggressive fibrous histiocytoma. To our knowledge, no fibrous histiocytoma of this localisation has ever been reported. The diagnosis can be made on histological grounds only. Differential diagnosis includes, besides a ceruminoma, almost all benign and malignant non-epithelial tumours of the external auditory epithelial canal. Surgical removal is the therapy of choice. One year after the operation there has been no relapse.

Biodegradation of polystyrene, poly(metnyl methacrylate), and phenol formaldehyde.

The biodegradation of three synthetic 14C-labeled polymers, poly(methyl methacrylate), phenol formaldehyde, and polystyrene, was studied with 17 species of fungi in axenic cultures, five groups of soil invertebrates, and a variety of mixed microbial communities including sludges, soils, manures, garbages, and decaying plastics. Extremely low decomposition rates were found. The addition of cellulose and mineral failed to increase decomposition rates significantly.
