Effect of surfactants present in drinking water on the immune activity of mice.

The effect of some surfactants on the immune activity of mice was evaluated by determination of anti-sheep red blood cell (SRBC), plaque-forming cells (PFC), the intensity of anti-SRBC delayed type hypersensitivity, and PFC numbers to an autologous red blood cell antigen in the autoimmune response of mice drinking water containing surfactants. Depending on the substance used and on the duration of its administration, stimulation or inhibition of the immune response was revealed. The cell sensitive to Triton X-100 undergoing transformation or activation is the T cell. Possible mechanisms of interaction of the surfactants with the immunologically committed cells are discussed.

T and B lymphocytes in patients with steroid-dependent bronchial asthma during long-term treatment.

Since corticosteroids are known to be a potent factor redistributing the peripheral blood lymphocytes to other body compartments, we estimated the sub-populations of T and B lymphocytes in peripheral blood of steroid dependent asthma patients. In twenty steroid-treated asthma patients and eighteen healthy blood donors the percentage and absolute number of lymphocytes forming spontaneous rosettes with sheep red blood cells ("early" and "late" T lymphocyte marker) and mouse red blood cells (B lymphocyte marker) were determined. The asthma patients were treated with 40 or 60 mg of triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog) i.m. for at least one year or more prior to the study. No statistically significant differences were observed in lymphocyte subpopulations between steroid-treated asthma patients and healthy blood donors.

The influence of protease inhibitor on the progress of bronchial asthma.

Trasylol in a single dose 100000 i.u. was administered intravenously to 22 patients suffering from bronchial asthma. Pulmonary function was evaluated by the subjects self-comfort, physical examination, spirometric measurements (VC, FEV1, FEV1%, MCBind.) and blood gas analysis (pH PCO2, PO2, SaO2). In half of the patients after Trasylol administration, a diminished dyspnoea and bronchospasm were observed. Analysis of blood gases indicated some decrease of PCO2, and an increase of PO2 and pH. In spirometric study no statistically significant differences, either before or after Trasylol administration, were noticed. Trasylol treatment may be applied for asthmatic patients especially those with severe disturbances in gas exchange.

[Level of blood serum lipids in rats treated with detergents].

Male Wistar rats were treated intraperitoneally once per week for 12 weeks with following detergents: Olbrotol-18 (nonionic detergent), a product of etheric condensation of 18 moles of ethylene oxide to 1 mole of the mixture of olein alcohol and cetyl alkohol in ratio 1:1, in a dose of 10 mg/kg; SBO (anionic detergent), sodium 2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate, in a dose of 10 mg/kg and Sterinol (cationic detergent), benzalkonium bromide, in a dose of 0.6 mg/kg. The control rats were injected with 0.9% saline solution. The content of total cholesterol, beta-lipoproteins and total lipids in serum were estimated. The increase of total cholesterol and the decrease of beta-lipoproteins content in serum of rats after all used detergents were observed as compared with the control. The increase of total lipid content only after long-term treatment with Olbrotol-18 was found. It is concluded that long term intraperitoneal treatment with detergents changes similarly the contents of total cholesterol and of beta-lipoproteins in blood serum of rats.
