A Rogerian process of inquiry.

This article present a Rogerian process of inquiry that is proposed to be a creative and original method commensurate with the epistemological and ontological foundations of the science of unitary human beings and which supports the aim of Rogerian research to understand the nature of human evolution and its multiple, unpredictable potentialities. The development of this research methodology has been guided by Lincoln and Guba's (1985) paradigmatic approach to the identification of original processes of inquiry.

Enfolding health-as-wholeness-and-harmony: a theory of Rogerian nursing practice.

The theory of enfolding health-as-wholeness-and-harmony has been derived from the science of unitary human beings and provides an evolutionary understanding of Rogerian nursing practice that recognizes the existence of subtle and gross manifestations of field pattern and the dynamic matrix of subtle configurations of patterning identified as health-as-wholeness-and-harmony. Evolutionary change is specified to be a dynamic, non-linear, and acausal process characterized by the movement of gross manifestations of patterning to new syntheses of subtle manifestations of patterning. Rogerian nursing practice is identified as the nurse and client knowingly participating in evolutionary patterning of the human and environmental fields for the purpose of enfolding health-as-wholeness-and-harmony.

Instrument development and the measurement of unitary constructs.

This article initiates needed dialogue on the development of instruments to measure unitary constructs. The concept of measurement is explored and current measurement in Rogerian research is considered in light of the issues raised in the discussion. The human field - environmental field relationship is presented as the clinical practice area serving as the basis for the development of a unitary instrument that purports to measure field pattern. The instrument entitled Mutual Exploration of the Healing Human Field - Environmental Field Relationship is offered as a beginning effort in constructing an instrument that measures a unitary phenomenon. Rogerian scholars are provided with the challenge to continue the debate regarding the whole field of measurement and the development of unitary tools.

A Rogerian theoretical tapestry.

A five-level analytical framework is employed in order to critically analyze Martha E. Rogers' science of unitary human beings. Philosophical and epistemological threads are followed in an attempt to evaluate the coherence and comprehensiveness of her theoretical work. The interconnectedness between the five levels is demonstrated, and areas of debate and concern are elucidated. The philosophical and epistemological tapestry emerging from Rogers' theoretical thinking is found to reflect coherence in her philosophical and epistemological positions and beauty in the pattern found therein. The challenge lies in finding innovative methods of inquiry congruent with Rogers' view.

Homelessness among the institutionalized elderly.

Home is the experience of a dynamic relationship between the individual and the environment. It can be viewed as a lived experience that possesses deep existential meaning for the individual. Homelessness is the experience of the negation of home; the relationship between the individual and the environment loses its intimacy and becomes severely damaged. This painful experience brings about deep existential despair. The data supports the strong probability that the institutionalized elderly are homeless and that the elder's attempts to cope with this unendurable pain results in behaviors that are often misinterpreted as indicating acceptance or adjustment to the nursing home setting. Nursing must recognize the possibility that to be institutionalized is to be homeless. This intolerable state must be alleviated either through significant modification of nursing home psychosocial environments or the identification of alternative settings for the care of chronically ill and debilitated elderly persons.
