The trained nurse in general practice.

A trained nurse is employed in a suburban general practice in South Australia to provide additional care for elderly patients at home. This nurse's observations, her assessments, the problems she encountered and the courses of action she took during 426 consecutive visits are reported and discussed. The cost of the visits is estimated.

Medical manpower in South Australia with special reference to general practitioners.

A survey of general-practitioner and total medical manpower in South Australia has been made through the AMA local associations. This reveals that a sizeable increase in medical manpower, particularly for general practitioners, is likely in the coming decade. Immediate attention is warranted to find solutions to problems which can be expected to arise from a possible oversupply of doctors. The solutions will need to be acceptable to universities, governments, the AMA and the Australian people.

Medications for the elderly.

Medications were checked by a trained nurse during the course of her duties in a controlled study of 150 elderly people with cerebrovascular disease. The cost of medications was marginally reduced in a group of people receiving the additional supervision, while it rose by 12.0% in a control group. In the group visited by the nurse, containers were labelled correctly for significantly more people than was the case with the control group.
