Family health: an emerging paradigm for social workers.

The profession of social work has, since its inception, stressed the importance of the family system in social treatment. Even though the family has always been central to effective social work intervention, the framing of the family system from a family health perspective is new to the field. The goal of this paper is to present the empirical grounding of family health and the implications of this emerging paradigm for social policy. Family health is built on the biopsychosocial model and emphasizes the importance of the role of the family system in the social functioning of individuals. Family health is defined (Pardeck and Yuen, 1999, p. 1) "as a state of holistic well-being of the family system. Family health is manifested by the development of, and continuous interaction among, the physical, mental, emotional, social, economic, cultural and spiritual dimensions of the family which results in the holistic well-being of the family and its members."

An update on the Americans with Disabilities Act: implications for health and human services delivery.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law nearly a decade ago. The ADA is designed to protect persons with disabilities from discrimination in nearly every aspect of American life. This article focuses on a number of recent court rulings that help to clarify important components of the ADA. It is critical for health and human services professionals to be aware of these recent rulings because they affect the delivery of services. It is concluded that professionals working in the health and human services should have ongoing training and education concerning the changing legal interpretations of the ADA. Many of these changes have important implications for service delivery.

Rationalizing decision-making through computer technology: a critical appraisal.

As human services become more complex and multifaceted, sound decision-making guiding the service delivery process becomes critical. Administrators and others view computer technology as a means to rationalize the decision-making process at all levels of organizational life. The Management Information System (MIS) and program evaluations are viewed as technologies particularly useful for enhancing the decision-making process through computer technology. The strengths and limitations of computer technology are discussed. Strategies for using computer technology responsibly are offered.

Psychiatric disabilities and the Americans with Disabilities Act: implications for policy and practice.

People with psychiatric disabilities are often victims of job discrimination. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 makes it very clear that job discrimination based on a psychiatric impairment is illegal. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) reports that psychiatric disability is one of the leading causes why persons file discrimination complaints. Given this situation, an analysis is offered of what constitutes a psychiatric disability under the ADA. An overview, an analysis, and examples of the kinds of accommodations employers can be expected to provide people with psychiatric disabilities are offered. The policy and practice implications of the employment provisions (Title I) in the area of psychiatric disabilities are presented.

An exploratory study of sex differences in orientation to clinical practice.

Few statistically significant sex differences were found in orientation to clinical practice of a randomly selected sample of 300 licensed clinical social workers. 28 male and 69 female licensed clinical social workers had very similar attitudes, philosophies, and behaviors toward clinical practice. These findings add to the limited research available.

Explorations in a proposed national policy for children and families.

Empirical evidence suggests that the family system is under pressure in the United States. This evidence includes but is not limited to a significant increase in out-of-wedlock childbearing by teenagers, an increase in the number of children living in families below the poverty level, lack of available health care to large numbers of children and families, and a rising number of children dropping out of school. The authors offer an analysis of the problems facing families, and a national policy model for children and families is proposed.

Treating powerless minorities through an ecosystem approach.

An ecological approach to social work practice for a minority based on an ecosystem-oriented assessment-intervention model is presented. Strengths and limitations of the ecological perspective for practice are emphasized (in the context of power dynamics). A case study is presented.

Recommended books for helping children deal with separation and divorce.

Books can be a useful tool for helping children deal with separation and divorce. Practitioners will find that books are available which offer realistic insight into the problems that children experience during family breakdown. These problems are noted, and annotated books on separation and divorce are presented.

Factors associated with premature termination of psychotherapy by children.

This study reports findings on factors associated with children who terminate psychotherapy prematurely. The sample was composed of 45 children, with an average age of 13.5 years. It was found that children are more likely to remain in treatment if the therapist is perceived as professional and caring, and if the treatment plan is adequately explained.

Using literature to help adolescents cope with problems.

Literature has been found to be a creative tool for helping children cope with changes in their lives. Using books in intervention is referred to as bibliotherapy. This article illustrates how bibliotherapy can be used to help adolescents cope with family breakdown, foster care, and adoption placement. Books are presented that can be useful in clinical practice.

Postmodernism and clinical practice: a critical analysis of the disease model.

The disease model attempts to explain a variety of phenomena ranging from mental illness to criminal behavior. This approach is grounded in the Western philosophical tradition of dualism. The limitations of the disease model are analyzed through a postmodern perspective. Socially sensitive strategies for clinical intervention are offered.

An analysis of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

This paper presents the basic philosophies that have influenced the development of social policy affecting the disabled. These philosophies include utilitarianism, humanitarianism, and human rights. It is suggested that the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is grounded in the human rights philosophy. Under the Act, disabled individuals are treated as an oppressed group who have been denied basic constitutional rights. The Americans With Disabilities Act is considered to be the "emancipation proclamation for the disabled."

A multiple regression analysis of family factors affecting the potential for alcoholism in college students.

This study explored the effects of the family system on the potential for alcoholism in college students. Analysis of the data indicated that students' gender, race, and how often they consumed alcohol were unrelated to the potential for alcoholism. However, perceived conflict in the students' family of origin appeared to increase the potential for alcoholism. This finding is consistent with family systems theory, used by many human service professionals as a basis for assessing and treating chemical dependency.

Using books to prevent and treat adolescent chemical dependency.

This article presents strategies for using the bibliotherapeutic process to prevent and treat adolescent alcohol and drug abuse. Definitions, goals, and principles of bibliotherapy are overviewed. Synopses of several useful books that focus on chemical dependency are presented.
