[Metastasis in submandibular gland from a leiomyosarcoma of the uterus].

Two general types of metastases should be distinguished in metastatic salivary gland tumors: one of them are tumors originating in the head and neck region, and the other are tumors from distant tumor sites. Distant metastasis affecting the submandibular gland are a rare entity. We report a case of the uterus leiomyosarcoma which metastatised in the submandibular gland.

[Cervical metastasis from testicular teratoma].

The presence of neck metastasis in patients with testicular germ cell neoplasms in a rare but well known phenomenon. The incidence of neck metastasis in testicular carcinoma has been reported to be present in a 5% of cases. When cervical metastasis occurs, surgical resection of the residual disease following chemotherapy and using a specific technique of modified neck dissection results in a surprisingly improvement of the prognosis.

[Bilateral aneurysm of the internal carotid artery and thrombosis of the jugular vein. Case report].

Extracranial carotid artery aneurysms is a very odd pathology which first sign usually is a neck mass. At present the arteriosclerosis is considered its main source and surgery is promoted as its regular treatment, but each case must be managed according the distinct peculiarities showed. This paper reports the clinic and radiological features of a woman diagnosed of bilateral carotid aneurysm with the addition of a thrombosis check afterwards of the left jugular vein. Because of the rarity of this case think justified the record. A bibliographical perusal of this singular entity accompanies the article.

[Presentation of multiple oncocytic type laryngeal cysts. Clinical and histopathological findings].

Oncocytic cysts are a histologically well-defined subgroup of cystic lesions of the larynx. Oncocytic cysts of the larynx are rare, clinically similar to simple laryngeal cysts, and occur as a casual finding of pathology studies. Multiple oncocytic cysts have rarely been described. Microscopic examination of laryngeal biopsies showed cysts within the lamina propria lined by oncocytic epithelium. The differential diagnosis and pathogenesis of oncocytic cysts is discussed and other laryngeal cystic lesions are reviewed.

[Cartilaginous tumors of the larynx. A report of 3 cases].

Cartilaginous tumours of the larynx are very seldom encountered. Worldwide literature report until now no more than 250 cases. The greatest number of cases (72%) are benign and localized on cricoid cartilage. They are characterized by its slow pace spread and chondrosarcomata shows scant tendency to metastasize, prevailing, instead, local increase. Best treatment resulted the conservative surgery. We report 3 cases (1 chondroma and 2 low ranked chondrosarcomata) diagnosed and treated in our Hospital in the last 15 years. Clinical and anatomopathologic features are exposed and the management as well, and also the postoperative course of each patient.

Effect of chemotherapy on thyroid hormone concentration in patients with malignant hematologic diseases.

Malignant hematologic diseases are severe illnesses for which complex forms of treatment are used and to which a great variety of metabolic changes are anticipated. Both lymphomas and leukemias, as well as chemotherapy, can induce abnormalities in thyroid hormone metabolism without overt disease, thus leading to what is known as euthyroid sick syndrome (ESS). In the present report, 25 patients with lymphomas and leukemias were studied to evaluate the effect of chemotherapy on thyroid hormone concentration. After chemotherapy, the most frequent and significant alteration was a decrease in serum triiodothyronine concentration.

Primary liposarcoma of the larynx. Case report and literature review.

Laryngeal liposarcoma is an unusual tumor. Only 16 cases have been previously reported. We describe a new case of well-differentiated laryngeal liposarcoma and review the literature. The tumor was treated by surgical removal. Immunohistochemical study showed an immunophenotype consistent with liposarcoma. The case described is of the oldest patient (83 years old), the second to be found in a woman, and the second to be localized to one true vocal cord (according to the literature reviewed). The patient is still free of tumor 2 years later. The treatment and prognosis of liposarcoma of the larynx are discussed.

[Reconstructive results in 31 cases using a myocutaneous flap from pectoralis major].

A study was carried out about the general features of myocutaneous flap taken from the pectoralis major muscle. This flap is employed in the reconstructive step after ablative surgery for carcinomata of the oropharynx, tongue, floor of the mouth, hypopharynx and other growths of the neck with skin involvement. The AA. review their 31 cases results, both cosmetic and functionally, and consider that the end-condition is favorable and hopeful in the whole.

[Surgical correction of choanal atresia. Our personal experience].

We find that the treatment indicated for bilateral choanal atresia in the newborn is the transnasal approach, maintaining the patency by means of soft tubes (endotracheal) through 5-7 weeks. The few which recurred were managed by the transpalatal technique. The AA. describe their own experience in 10 cases seen at the ENT-department of the Servasa Hospital, Alicante, between 1979-1989.

[Localized laryngeal amyloidosis. Endoscopic surgery with CO2 laser].

Laryngeal amyloidosis is a very rare disease. In the upper airways, the most common localization is the laryngeal organ, particularly the supraglotic region. Usually laryngeal amyloidosis is a localized primary form, although it has occasionally been reported in conjunction with system amyloidosis. We are reporting a new case of localized primary laryngeal amyloidosis in the right arytenoid mucosa in a 66 years old woman who underwent CO2 laser endoscopic surgery.

[Induction chemotherapy in the treatment of head and neck cancer in advanced stages].

Fifty patients with inoperable head and neck carcinomas were treated with Cisplatin-5-fluorouracil induction chemotherapy. After 3 years follow-up, characteristics of patients have been studied, that is: age, sex, stage, primary site, histological type, histological grade and performance status. The analysis of chemotherapy treatment and results on primary tumor and lymphatic areas are presented. A total response rate of 83.3% with 22.9% of complete response rate have been observed. Local treatment after chemotherapy is studied. Radiotherapy increased response in 33.4% of cases. Response duration and survival is to have a complete response after systemic and local treatment. Literature is revised.

[Primary laryngeal lymphoma].

We report a new case of supraglottic primary laryngeal lymphoma. Fewer than 30 cases have been reported in the English-language literature. The absence of any other lymphoma site was confirmed by post-mortem study.
