The AA. try to evaluate the therapy of arterial hypertension in the elderly. With the present day data, they think it is advisable to make it but with some limitation--the J curve on diastolic arterial blood pressure (85 mmHg) and situations that may lead to modifications of therapy, such as troubles of rhythm, gout, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia and perfusion deficiencies of lower limbs. OPAL concept (Old People With Active Life styles) recommends an individualized establishment of therapy instead of standard techniques to try the minimal trouble to a good quality of life for the patient.
We have isolated a hamster liver cDNA whose expression is induced upon feeding hamsters with a cholic acid-rich diet. It was identified as a cytochrome P450 family 3 protein, by sequence homology, and named CYP3A10. The activity of CYP3A10 was determined by transient expression of its cDNA in transfected COS cells and was found to hydroxylate lithocholic acid at position 6 beta. CYP3A10 RNA is 50-fold higher in males than in female hamsters. In males, it appears to be regulated by age with expression highest after puberty. Shortly after weaning (28 days), cholic acid feeding of male hamsters elevates the level of message over that of hamsters fed with normal laboratory chow. Females do not exhibit regulation by cholic acid. In hamster liver, murideoxycholic acid, the 6 beta-metabolite of lithocholic acid, is the major hydroxylated product of lithocholic acid. Lithocholic acid 6 beta-hydroxylase (6 beta-hydroxylase) activity is greatly diminished in hamster female liver microsomes as would be expected due to the lack of CYP3A10 mRNA in females. Additionally, male liver microsomal 6 beta-hydroxylase activity was increased by cholic acid feeding, consistent with the cholic acid-mediated induction of its RNA. These results indicate that, in male hamsters, 6 beta-hydroxylation is the major pathway for detoxification of lithocholate and that, likely, CYP3A10 is responsible for that activity.

The radiographic and clinical features of 50 patients with documented bacterial lung abscess are presented. Neither clinical nor radiographic features permit a specific diagnosis of lung abscess to be made; microbiologic or histopathologic material is needed to establish the diagnosis. A surprising percentage of patients (18%) had radiographically occult lung abscesses that were diagnosed only at the time of surgery or autopsy. Possible causes for and means of avoiding this diagnostic pitfall are presented.
Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) was used to study the structure of protein/sodium dodecylsulfate complexes. Two water soluble proteins, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ovalbumin (OVA), were used. The protein concentration was kept constant at 1 wt %, and protein/detergent wt ratio varied between 1/1, 1/1.5, 1/2 and 1/3. Absolute intensities of SANS distributions were analyzed by a fractal model. Analyses of large Q portions of SANS distributions established that sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) molecules bound to a protein/SDS complex form micelle-like clusters. On the other hand, analyses of small Q portions of SANS distributions clearly showed that the arrangement of micelle-like clusters resembles a fractal packing of spheres. We showed that a protein/SDS complex can be characterized by four parameters extracted from the scattering experiment, namely, the average micelle size and its aggregation number, the fractal dimension characterizing the conformation of the micellar chains, the correlation length giving the extent of the unfolded polypeptide chains, and the numbers of micelle-like clusters in the complex.

We have observed Brillouin-like low frequency collective modes in the scattering of 1 A neutrons from a fully in vivo deuterated protein. These modes are tentatively interpreted as due to short-lived coherent excitations propagating with velocities between 2,000 and 4,000 m/s in elements of the secondary structure and patches of closely associated water.

Cerebrospinal fluid from 53 patients with clinical evidence of neurocysticercosis and 11 who suffered from several diseases were studied to evaluate the behaviour of indirect immunofluorescence test and some parameters of routine analysis. In neurocysticercosis there were pleocytosis in 88.7% of cases, eosinophilorrachia in 60.3%, hyperproteinorrachia in 71.7% and hypoglucorrachia in 13.2%. The indirect immunofluorescence test was positive in 79.2% of cases but false-positive results were found when the samples showed xanthochromia or erythrocyte contamination. The authors discuss their results in comparison with those in literature and conclude that the immunofluorescent test is sensitive and useful in diagnosis of neurocysticercosis, except when the interferents previously mentioned are present.

Using the Dürrer electrode needle to record the intramural electrogram and a standard peripheral electrocardiogram (ECG) lead as reference, the authors studied the action of 9 different drugs in the conduction system of dogs. The authors concluded that diphenylhydantoin and lignocaine would be useful in dysrhythmias related to increased excitability and perhaps increased automatism. Ajmaline and quinidine may be some of some interest in dysrhythmias due to conduction disturbances; and, finally, ajmaline, diphenylhydantoin, di-isopyramide and quinidine may be useful in dysrhythmias due to focal re-entry.
