A single blind, prospective, randomized trial comparing n-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive (Indermil) and sutures for skin closure in hand surgery.

Fifty patients underwent a variety of hand operations and were randomized for wound closure either with tissue adhesive (Indermil) or sutures. The two treatment groups had similar demographic characteristics and similar outcomes at the 2 and 6 week postoperative assessments which were performed by a designated tissue viability nurse blinded to the method of closure. Five minor wound dehiscences occurred: three in the adhesive group and two in the suture group. No infection occurred in either group. In conclusion, the study demonstrates tissue adhesive is as effective as suture in this type of hand surgery.

Alginates and hydrofibre dressings.

Alginates are versatile dressings able to support moist wound healing. They can absorb large amounts of wound exudate. Although similar to alginates, hydrofibre dressings are hydrocolloids.

Vasospastic exercise-associated unilateral leg ischemia: evaluation with thallium-201.

Thallium 201 (Tl-201) as a marker of regional tissue perfusion is described as a diagnostic aid in a case of exercise-induced vasospastic disease affecting the lower leg of a physically active young adult male who had no evidence of atherosclerotic disease. The success and failure of various therapeutic attempts made in behalf of this patient have been monitored by repeated Tl-201 administrations. Exercise-associated ischemia in tissues other than the myocardium can be investigated with Tl-201.

Language evaluation: science of art?

This study was designed to determine the degree of agreement between standardized tests of language development and clinical judgment. The Test of Auditory Comprehension of Language (TACL), the Carrow Elicited Language Inventory (CELI), and the Sequenced Inventory of Communication Development (SICD) were used. Three-year-old white preschool children were tested individually by experienced speech-language pathologists in day-care centers. Each examiner also made a clinical judgment of normal or impaired language behavior, based on observations during the testing. The results indicated that the CELI agreed the most with the clinical judgment of the examiners, followed by the SICD and TACL. The clinical significance of these results is discussed.

Dressing selection for the treatment of coumarin necrosis.

The correct dressing selection is of vital importance in producing as rapid a healing response as possible. John Timmons demonstrates the effects of a new dressing for the treatment of coumarin necrosis. Coloplast, the manufacturers of the dressing, Biatain Adhesive, supported the author while he was treating the patient.
