Absence of effects on platelet membrane fluidity by antibiotics in ESR spectra.

The effect of several antibiotics on rat platelet membrane fluidity was examined by ESR spectrometry using 5-doxyl stearate as the spin probe. Latamoxef, cefamandole, cefotaxime and carbenicillin had negligible effects on the order parameters, the indices of membrane fluidity, of platelet-rich plasma or washed platelets at high concentrations that would inhibit ADP-induced rat platelet aggregation in vitro. A further in vivo study with one of these antibiotics, latamoxef, showed no significant effect on the fluidity based on ESR data.

Giant aneurysm of the splenic artery and huge varix.

Giant aneurysm of the splenic artery and huge varix accompanied by portal hypertension and splenomegaly are described. Computed tomography proved to be an ideal tool in the evaluation of both aneurysm and varix. Enhancement scan revealed giant aneurysm as a round mass in the splenic hilus and huge varix as one oval and one bell-shaped shadow adjacent to the spleen. They were diagnosed by angiography.

Hepatocellular carcinoma detected by iodized oil. Use of anticancer agents.

Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) was performed in 97 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. Ethiodol (iodized oil) containing an anticancer drug was infused via the hepatic artery followed by Gelfoam particles. The Ethiodol emulsion was selectively retained in the tumor vessels and also remained in the small daughter nodules that could not be detected by angiography or computed tomography (CT) prior to TAE. Ethiodol remained in the tumor for more than 1 year. Following TAE, main tumors and small daughter nodules appeared as areas of markedly high density on CT. In most patients there was a reduction in the tumor size following TAE, and serum alpha-fetoprotein levels were reduced in all patients whose initial levels had exceeded 400 ng/ml. This method is considered to be effective not only for treatment of hepatic tumor but also useful for evaluation of post-TAE changes in the tumor and diagnosis of small daughter nodules, due to the long-term accumulation of Ethiodol in tumor vessels.

Protein polymorphisms and their genetic control in the red-backed vole, Clethrionomys rufocanus bedfordiae.

Twenty enzymatic and non-enzymatic proteins in a wild population of red-backed voles, Cletrionomys rufocanus bedfordiae, were investigated by electrophoresis. Seven enzymatic and non-enzymatic protein systems were found to be polymorphic. Breeding data indicated that the mode of inheritance of the enzyme systems ME-1, ME-2, GPD and EST were consistent with a Mendelian law. Two systems, 6 PGD and SOD, were estimated to be genetically controlled from the electrophoretic patterns and mother-offspring comparison of phenotypes. In the Tf system two new additional phenotypes were observed, but their inheritance could not be elucidated. Gene frequencies at seven loci were also investigated in 88 animals. There was no significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.

High density bile in the gallbladder observed by computed tomography.

In eight of 620 computed tomographic examinations of the gallbladder the density of bile was higher than that of the liver. In three the bile density increased and in one it decreased on serial studies. Four of these eight patients had hepatocellular carcinoma.
