During the years 1990 to 1991, smears taken from the anal canal of 45 randomly selected homosexual males were studied. Several cytological criteria were used to study infection by human papillomavirus (HPV). The cytological study and an anoscopy was performed and a swab was taken for HPV-DNA hybridization, using labelled RNA probes for HPV-DNA: 6,11,16,18,31,33, and 35. In our study we observed the existence of a high proportion (9.5%) of inadequate smears that did not contain glandular cells and/or metaplasia. A sensitivity of 78% and a specificity of 72% was obtained. Sensitivity and specificity were 68% and 91%, respectively, when these criteria were restricted to the presence of koilocytes and/or dyskeratocytes. The high rate of occult infections obtained in our study lead us to suggest the simultaneous use of cytology, molecular hybridization, and anoscopy for suitable care of those patients with a high risk of contracting HPV infections of the anal canal.

Stenosis of the ileal loop itself in the urinary diversion performed with the technique described by Bricker is uncommon, particularly in adults, and nowadays is basically managed through non-invasive methods. This paper contributes one case of stenosis of the ileal loop in a patient with urinary diversion performed with Bricker's technique, which was treated by partial resection of the ileal loop, since use of non-invasive techniques was not possible due to technical hindrances. The pathoanatomical study showed the different etiopathogeny of this type of stenosis relative to others related to the ileal loop (stoma and ureteroileal attachment stenosis). A review is made of the etiopathogeny, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of this type of stenosis. Occurrence of stenosis as late complication has lead us to consider the convenience for late revisions in this type of surgery.
Eight cases are reported about women with the diagnosis of HPV related lesions; a "dot-blot" hybridization technique with radioactive probes was done with each of them, also a conization with a diathermic loop (LLETZ) and a post operative follow-up with methods such as Pap smear, colposcopy and hybridization. We think the way we manage HPV related lesions has the advantage of an accurate diagnosis, with the exact envolved HPV type, and it discards the possibility of an infiltrating carcinoma, after studying the conization sample. Hybridization techniques are complementary to Pap smear in order to know the infective viral type and to exclude a possible occult infection in the post-operative period. LLETZ conization ended up as a quick and easy technique with no postoperative problems and with a proved efficiency, since neither recurrences were found (with citology) nor viral DNA was detected, the technique is not too complicated and takes about 30 minutes.
