A critical evaluation of a method for treatment of facial hypertrichosis in women.

An electroepilation apparatus equipped with a metal tweezer was studied with reference to possible permanent removal of facial hair in women with cosmetically embarrassing hypertrichosis. 8 women were epilated on a fixed area of 1 cm2 and counts of the epilated hairs were done. 5-7 months later, the same area was epilated and the terminal hairs counted. No significant difference in the hair counts was found on the two epilations. The method must be considered inapplicable for permanent removal of superfluous hair.

Hemophilus ducreyi infection resembling granuloma inguinale.

A case of Hemophilus ducreyi infection clinically resembling granuloma inguinale is reported. Culture of the causative organism permitted a definitive diagnosis to be made. Combined treatment with tetracycline and sulphamethizole/trimethoprim rapidly cleared the infection.

Granulomatous reaction in a red tattoo.

A granulomatous reaction developed in the red part of a professionally executed tattoo. The reaction appeared a few weeks after tattooing. A patch test for mercuric bichloride proved negative. The localization to the red part of the tattoo implies a specific reaction to an unknown antigen, and that the reaction may denote a localized delayed hypersensitivity.

Allergic contact dermatitis from Philodendron scandens KOCH et SELLO subsp. oxycardium (SCHOTT) BUNTING ("Philodendron scandens cordatum").

Allergic contact dermatitis due to Philodendron scandens KOCH et SELLO subsp. oxycardium (SCHOTT) BUNTING ("Philodendron scandens cordatum") is seldom reported. In four patients with dermatitis, allergy to philodendron species was found through patch testing with leaves, stems and ether extracts from eight philodendron species. Although this allergy appears to be rare, it ought to be considered in patients with dermatitis on hands, arms and face.

Acanthosis nigricans associated with adenocarcinoma of the thyroid gland.

The association between acanthosis nigricans (malignant type) and internal malignant tumour is well established. In the majority of cases the malignant tumour is localized to the gastrointestinal tract or the thoracic cavity. The malignant tumour is believed to be an adenocarcinoma in most cases. A case of malignant acanthosis nigricans associated with a follicular adenocarcinoma of the thyroid gland in a 31-year-old white male with congenital hypothyroidism and eruptive xanthomas due to hyperlipoproteinemia of type V (Frederickson) is reported.

Normal function of the thyroid gland in PUVA-treated psoriatics.

Ten psoriatics who were started on therapy with psoralen plus long-wave ultraviolet radiation (PUVA) were investigated for a possible influence of the treatment on the thyroid gland function. No statistically significant changes were found in the levels of serum thyroxine, triiodothyronine or thyrotropin obtained after 2 and 4 weeks' therapy and 3 months after cessation of therapy.

Nail--patella syndrome associated with renal failure requiring transplantation.

The nail--patella syndrome is a rare, inheritable disease of the connective tissue in which multiple osseous abnormalities are associated with dysplasia of the nails. Renal dysfunction is found in 25--42% of cases and varies from asymptomatic proteinuria to renal failure. This paper describes a patient with nail--patella syndrome and terminal renal disease requiring transplantation.

Squamous cell carcinoma. Occurrence in mycosis fungoides treated with psoralens plus long-wave ultraviolet radiation.

In two patients with mycosis fungoides, a squamous cell carcinoma developed during therapy with psoralens plus long-wave ultraviolet radiation (PUVA). In both patients the carcinoma developed on areas not usually exposed to sunlight. Before receiving PUVA therapy one patient had been treated with topically applied thiotepa and x-ray irradiation, while in the other patient PUVA was the only treatment received except for topical corticosteroids. The carcinomas developed after a total UVA dose of 2,042 and 1,296 joules/sq cm, respectively.

Pulmonary disease complicating intermittent methotrexate therapy of psoriasis.

A patient with psoriasis was treated with methotrexate (MTX) orally once a week. Bilateral pulmonary infiltrations, hilar- and peripheral adenopathy with granulomas, cough, fever and dyspnoea developed after 10 months of treatment. Similar symptoms in patients receiving MTX have been described by others. The clinical symptoms cleared after MTX was withdrawn. However, the radiographic changes persisted long after the symptoms had resolved. The possibility of sarcoidosis incidentally developing during the MTX treatment is discussed.

Treatment of chlamydial urethritis in men and Chlamydia trachomatis-positive female partners: comparison of erythromycin and tetracycline in treatment courses of one week.

Seventy-one consecutive men who had Chlamydia trachomatis-positive nongonococcal urethritis were assigned randomly to treatment for one week with either tetracycline or erythromycin (1g daily). Seventy men completed the study. At follow-up, there were two therapeutic failures among 36 patients treated with erythromycin, and two failures among 34 patients treated with tetracycline. Twenty-four C. trachomatis-positive female contacts were randomly assigned to treatment regimens similar to those of the men. There was one treatment failure among 12 women treated with erythromycin, and no failure among 12 treated with tetracycline. In this study the urethral smears contained fewer than five leukocytes per high-power field in 16% of the C. trachomatis-positive men with symptoms suggestive of urethritis.
