Measurement of femoral torsion with ultrasound: evaluation of a new technique using reference lines on the posterior surface of the femur.

A technique of measuring femoral torsion employing reference lines on the posterior surface of the femur has been described. This technique was evaluated on 27 dry adult femora and then on 40 adult patients. The technique was found to be reliable and reproducible. The values of femoral torsion obtained by this technique is lower than that obtained when anterior reference lines are used.

Effect of inhalation of insecticide spray on learning and memory in rats.

Acute exposure to insecticide (Baygon-spray; 5 ml/animal/5 min) inhalation in rats did not affect the learning process but produced a significant loss of memory (P less than 0.01 less than 0.001) whereas chronic exposure (one exposure per day for three weeks) produced a significant delay in learning (P less than 0.05) and memory (P less than 0.01). Acetylcholinesterase activity in brain after acute and chronic exposure declined significantly (P less than 0.01) during the learning process but returned to normal after 24 hr.

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus mimicking carotid artery dissection: a case report.

Herpes zoster is a common viral illness presenting with vesicular eruptions which are usually preceded by pain, erythema, and tenderness in a dermatomal distribution. The ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve is commonly involved (herpes zoster ophthalmicus). Early diagnosis before eruption of vesicles can be difficult and symptoms may be confused with other neurologic disorders. We present a patient with herpes zoster ophthalmicus who presented with face and neck pain associated with visual symptoms mimicking carotid artery dissection. Atypical presentation and benefits of early antiviral treatment are discussed.
