Previous studies have identified a set of highly phosphorylated proteins of 23-25 kDa accumulated during normal embryogenesis of Zea mays L. and which disappear in early germination. They can be induced precociously in embryos by abscisic acid (ABA) treatment. Here the synthesis and accumulation of this group of proteins and their corresponding mRNAs were examined in ABA-deficient viviparous embryos at different developmental stages whether treated or not with ABA, and in water-stressed leaves of both wild-type and viviparous mutants. During embryogenesis and precocious germination of viviparous embryos the pattern of expression of the 23-25 kDa proteins and mRNAs closely resembles that found in non-mutant embryo development. They are also induced in young viviparous embryos by ABA treatment. In contrast, leaves of ABA-deficient mutants fail to accumulate mRNA in water stress, yet do respond to applied ABA. In water-stressed leaves of wild type plants the mRNAs are induced and translated into 4 proteins with a molecular weight and isoelectric point identical to those found in embryos. These results indicate that the 23-25 kDa protein set is a new member of the recently described class of proteins involved in generalized plant ABA responses. The different pattern of expression for the ABA-regulated 23-25 kDa proteins and mRNAs found in embryo and in vegetative tissues of viviparous mutants is discussed.
The presence of a stoechiometric electrophoresis pattern of histones in carefully isolated synaptonemal complexes is reported. The use of this pattern is suggested as an internal standard of synaptonemal complex purification, in addition to the more generally used electron micrographs. This is especially useful in experiments leading to the characterization of the protein components of SCs. The use of mice of an age at which pachytenes predominate (90%) in the prophase-cell population is also advantageous to improve the final yield in synaptonemal complexes.

A 37 year old man developed transient fungemia caused by Candida zeylanoides following a kidney and pancreas transplant. For the next seven months the patient had signs and symptoms of right knee arthritis. Candida zeylanoides was finally identified as the aetiological agent. Treatment with intravenous amphotericin B was successful. To our knowledge this is the first report of Candida zeylanoides arthritis.

In a consecutive series of 639 Renal Transplants (RT) performed between January 1st 1978 and December 31st 1988, 75 Renal Transplanctectomies (RTX) were carried out. Of those, fifty-seven (76%) were due to immunological causes, 10 (13.3%) to vascular complications, 7 (9.3%) to urological problems and 1 (1.3%) to deep infection. The time elapsed between RTX and RT was as follows: 25 were performed earlier than 6 weeks, 17 between 6 weeks to 6 months, and 33 after 6 months. The higher number of complications did not happened, as it is frequently described, in the first group; on the contrary, it fell in the group that had been transplanted longer. There were 13 immunologically caused renal rhexis, 5 of which were RTX, another 5 were operated on and diagnosed at perioperation, and immediately received the appropriate treatment so they were able to keep their kidney, and finally, 3 patients were diagnosed a rejection with renal rhexis, ecographically confirmed. These patients were given only medical treatment, which was enough to allow jugulation of the picture. RTX techniques used were: extracapsular in 28 cases and intracapsular in 47. Surgical approach, except for 2 cases of simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplantation, was extraperitoneal.
