67Ga-citrate distribution in solid hepatoma 22.

The intracellular distribution of 67Ga was studied in solid hepatoma 22 implanted in C3Ha/6 mice and in normal liver tissue from the same animals at different time intervals. The tissues were fractionated according to differential centrifugation principles, and subcellular fractions were isolated consecutively. The enzyme activities and the accumulation of 67Ga were determined in each fraction. The subcellular distribution of 67Ga in the tumor tissue was different compared with normal liver; in tumor it was found mainly in the nuclear fraction and this distribution was independent of time, but in normal liver the accumulation was mainly in the mitochondrial fraction, this was time-dependent and the maximal uptake was found 48 h after 67Ga administration.

Leukemoid reaction induced by different transplantable tumors in three inbred mouse strains.

We have studied the induction of a granulocyte-associated leukocytosis (leukemoid reaction) in C3HA, C57B1/6, and DBA/2 mice by a number of transplantable tumors of different origin. Leukemia L1210, Hepatoma 22, a transplantable mammary carcinoma of spontaneous C3HA origin, and a L929 culture fibroblasts-derived rhabdomyosarcoma, all induced a leukemoid reaction in their specific mouse strain. Melanoma B16 and Lewis lung carcinoma gave no reaction; Adenocarcinoma 755 and Harding-Passey melanoma evoked a leukocytosis but not due to an increase in neutrophils. Some extratumoral factors can influence the hematological response; the intensity of final leukemoid reaction was higher in female mice than in males bearing the same tumor. On the other hand, Ehrlich ascites tumor transplanted in all three inbred mouse strains rendered different levels of leukemoid reaction; response was higher in DBA/2, intermediate in C3HA and lower in C57B1/6.

Acid hydrolases in the extracellular medium of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells.

The hydrolytic activities released to the extracellular medium by tumor cells could be related to the fundamental mechanisms of invasion and metastasis. This paper deals with a study of the extracellular release of several enzymatic activities by Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT) cells maintained in vitro. The activities of acid hydrolases increase during the first 30 minutes of in vitro incubation to levels significantly higher than those of cytoplasmic enzymes. The presented results are consistent with the hypothesis of the existence of a mechanism in these cells for the specific release of lysosomal contents.

Effect of proteinase inhibitor in experimental tumors.

Aprotinin, a wide range proteinase inhibitor, was given alone to tumor-bearing mice and life span and several tumor growth parameters were recordered. Aprotinin showed anti-tumor effects in Hepatoma 22 and Lewis lung carcinoma, remaining ineffective in Sarcoma 37, Leukemia L1210 and Ehrlich ascitic carcinoma.

Distribution of HLA antigens in a Cuban population.

The frequencies of the HLA antigens were determined in a population of 160 unrelated Cubans from three different ethnic groups (white, mixed-blood and negro). We typed for antigenic specificities of the A and B loci, and also for the Cw1 specificity of the C locus. Phenotype and gene frequencies for the different ethnic groups are presented for comparison. The phenotype distribution, the haplotype frequencies for the white group and the genetic distance between this group and a Spanish population were calculated.
