Identification of mixed-symmetry states in an odd-mass nearly spherical nucleus.

The low-spin structure of 93Nb has been studied using the (n,n'gamma) reaction at neutron energies ranging from 1.5 to 3 MeV and the 94Zr(p,2ngamma)93Nb reaction at bombarding energies from 11.5 to 19 MeV. States at 1779.7 and 1840.6 keV, respectively, are proposed as mixed-symmetry states associated with the pi2p(1/2)-1x(2(1),MS+,94Mo) coupling. These assignments are derived from the observed M1 and E2 transition strengths to the 2p(1/2)-1x(2(1)+,94Mo) symmetric one-phonon states, energy systematics, spins and parities, and comparison with shell model calculations.

Moralization of attachment: a fourth domain of conscience functioning.

OBJECTIVES: To define discrete developmental levels of understanding regarding the ways in which normal children and adolescents link remembered and current attachment experiences to their moral belief system and to study the correlation between this progression and previously identified stages of conscience conceptualization. METHOD: Using the moralization of attachment section from the semistructured Stilwell Conscience Interview, 132 normal volunteers between the ages of 5 and 17 years were individually interviewed. Analysis of the interviews resulted in five levels of understanding. RESULTS: By analyses of variance and covariance, the five attachment levels showed significant correlation with the five conceptualization stages. Conceptualization stage showed a stronger correlation than age. CONCLUSIONS: In normal development, moralization of attachment is a domain of conscience functioning which follows a five-level hierarchical developmental progression; first, the child's sense of security and empathic responsiveness become paired with a sense of moral obligation; caretaker rules are then incorporated; an understanding of how empathy modifies strict rule-following develops; idols and ideals are chosen that reflect earlier learning in attachment relationships; finally, a visualization of the self as moral standard-bearer or teacher unfolds.

Molecular determinants of lipid mediator-induced leukocyte adherence and emigration in rat mesenteric venules.

The objective of this study was to identify the molecular determinants of leukocyte rolling, adherence, and emigration elicited in postcapillary venules by the lipid mediators leukotriene B4 (LTB4) or platelet-activating factor (PAF). Leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion and shear rate were monitored in rat mesenteric venules during superfusion with either LTB4 or PAF in the presence or absence of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) directed against either leukocyte (CD18, CD11b) or endothelial cell [intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), E-selectin, P-selectin] adhesion glycoproteins. In untreated animals and in animals receiving a nonbinding control MAb, LTB4 and PAF increased the number of both adherent (8- and 4-fold, respectively) and emigrated (14- and 8-fold, respectively) leukocytes, while reducing leukocyte rolling velocity (36 and 33%, respectively). The LTB4- and PAF-induced leukocyte adherence and emigration were significantly attenuated by pretreatment with MAbs directed against CD18, CD11b, ICAM-1, and E-selectin, but not P-selectin. The reduction in leukocyte rolling velocity induced by LTB4 was not affected by any of the MAbs; however, both P- and E-selectin MAbs significantly attenuated the reduction in leukocyte rolling velocity elicited by PAF. The results of this study indicate that the leukocyte adherence and emigration induced by both LTB4 and PAF are mediated by CD11b/CD18 on leukocytes and by ICAM-1 and E-selectin on endothelial cells. The molecular determinant of leukocyte rolling appears to be mediator specific, with the selectins mediating the rolling elicited by PAF.

Traumatic disruption of the pancreatic duct demonstrated by endoscopic retrograde pancreatography.

Recurrent episodes of abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting associated with hyperamylasemia were noted in a 27-year-old female following blunt trauama in a bicycle accident. Ultrasound study of the upper abdomen and an upper gastrointestinal series were normal. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography (ERP) demonstrated a disruption of the main pancreatic duct and was very useful in planning and performing a distal pancreatectomy 17 days postinjury. The patient continues to be well 3 years later.
