Hematological effects of high dose of cortisol on the carp (Cyprinus carpio L.): cortisol effect on the carp blood.

The level of circulating cortisol and peripheral blood parameters were determined in carp age 2 years (K(2)) 24, 72, and 216 h after a single intraperitoneal injection of a high dose (200 mg x kg(-1) body wt) of hydrocortisone. The most striking effect of cortisol was manifest as a significant change in the percentage composition of leukocytes, whose number per unit volume of blood remained relatively constant. A profound lymphopenia and eosinopenia were compensated for in the general balance by an increased number of circulating promyelocytes and myelocytes as well as metamyelocytes and mature polymorphonuclear neutrophilic granulocytes. The results and their possible reasons are discussed on the background of literature data.

Prospective peritoneal scintigraphy in patients beginning continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

Forty-eight adult patients without clinical evidence of inguinal or abdominal wall hernias underwent peritoneal scintigraphy shortly after beginning continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Scintigraphically detectable subclinical structural defects involving the inguinal canal or abdominal wall were present in 14 patients. Within 5 months, four of these defects progressed to clinically significant CAPD-related structural complications. These patients could not be distinguished by clinical or scintigraphic criteria from the 10 patients with nonprogressive structural defects. No scintigraphic structural defects were detected in 34 patients, 30 of whom remained free of CAPD-related structural complications. Five patients developed symptomatic structural complications during follow-up in areas that had been scintigraphically normal at the onset of CAPD. We conclude that some CAPD-related structural complications arise de novo, while others represent progression of subclinical pre-existent structural abnormalities that can be detected by peritoneal scintigraphy. However, most asymptomatic scintigraphic defects do not progress to a symptomatic stage, limiting the usefulness of prospective peritoneal scintigraphy as a guide to recommend prophylactic repair of all asymptomatic structural defects in patients beginning CAPD.

The effect of X-irradiation on the alanine--and aspartate aminotransferase activity in the liver, kidney and spleen of mouse.

The effect of X-irradiation on the alanine- and aspartate aminotransferase activity in the liver, kidney and spleen of mouse. Acta Physiol. Pol. 1975, 26 (1): 95-101. The alanine- and aspartate aminotransferase (GOT and GPT) activities and the protein content were measured in the liver, kidney and spleen homogenates of mice exposed to a single whole body X-irradiation with a 900 r dose. The assays were performed in 6 h intervals during the first day and 24 h intervals from the 2nd until the 6th day after the exposure. Significant differences in the enzymatic activity were found in the course of 24 h in control animals and a marked increase of this activity was found after irradiation. This may be explained by changes in the permeability of the mitochondrial membrane for enzyme molecules.

Motor reactivity of isolated heart of grass-snake (Natrix natrix L.) effects of temperature and pH.

It was demonstrated that isolated heart of the grass-snake perfused with a fluid of properly chosen components can pulsate without abnormalities for at least 12 hours, and the rate of its contractions depends, in a high degree, on the temperature. This relationship is a logarithmic one, although in the temperature range from 10 degrees to 22 degrees C the regression is linear. The highest temperature at which the heart rhythm was still regular was 34 degrees C. The isolated heart contracted rhythmically and normally even when pH of the nutritive solution differed considerably from the physiological value, showing greater tolerance of contractility in the case of solutions in the alkaline range of pH. It seems that the pH range from 6.5 to 9.5 is the optimal one for maintaining the function of grass-snake heart.

Motor reactivity of isolated heart of the grass-snake (Natrix natrix L.).

Stimulation of the vagus nerve with a volley of electric impulses changed the action of grass-snake heart producing a negative chronotropic and inotropic effect. The effect of vagal stimulation was not different from the effect of acetylcholine administration and it was absent in the presence of atropine and hexamethonium. It was not possible to demonstrate sympathetic nervous fibres in the stimulated segment of the vagus nerve and trials of finding a separate nerve increasing the heart rate were unsuccessful. Parasympathicotonic agents caused bradycardia and a fall in the amplitude of cardiac contractions, and in sufficiently high doses they arrested the heart in diastole. The action of muscarine-like agents was stronger than that of nicotine, and the anticholinergic action of tubocurarine was weaker than that of atropine. Catecholamines exerted a positive inotropic and chronotropic effect which was completely blocked by propranolol in some tests only.

Changes in the activity of aspartate and alanine aminotransferase caused by aseptic inflammatory reaction and ionizing radiation in the liver, kidney and spleen of mice.

The activity of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase and the content of soluble proteins were determined in mice irradiated with single dose of 100 R or injected with turpentine and in mice subjected to both these stress factors. The aim of this study was determination of changes in the activity of both these enzymes in the liver, kidney and spleen within 48 hours). It was found that the action of both these stress factors caused significant changes in the activity of AspAT and A1AT in the first phase of the response of the organism to stress and caused statistically significant changes of this activity on the second day of the experiment.
