Ferrielectric liquid crystal subphase studied by polarized fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy

IR dichroism and the structure of a homogeneously aligned cell of a chiral smectic antiferroelectric liquid crystal (R)-1-methylheptyl 4-(4(')-dodecyloxybiphenyl-4-ylcarbonyloxy)-3-fluorobenzoate [with acronym (R)-12OF1M7] in a ferrielectric subphase in the temperature range between the antiferroelectric phase (also referred to as Fi2) and the smectic-C*(SmC*) phase are studied using polarized Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. The polarization dependencies of the absorbance for several characteristic bands are quantitatively analyzed for different stages of the electrically induced structural transformations in the sample, including the helix unwinding and the phase transition from the ferriphase to the SmC* phase. A qualitative similarity of the voltage dependence of the normalized angular shift of the IR absorbance profile for the "chiral" carbonyl band to that of the normalized macroscopic polarization is found. The voltage dependent dichroic properties of the sample are analyzed in terms of the molecular structure and unwinding of the helical structure under an external electric field. The rotational orientational biasing of the carbonyl groups around the long molecular axis is confirmed by the spectral data. The analysis of IR dichroic data for the field induced SmC* phase is used to determine the rotational orientational distributions for the carbonyl groups.

Field-induced phase transitions in an antiferroelectric liquid crystal using the pyroelectric effect

The antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) under investigation possesses different helical polar phases. Measurements of pyroelectric response of these phases as a function of temperature and bias field have elucidated the ability of this method for investigating the nature of antiferroelectric phases and phase transitions under the bias field. The pyroelectric signal as a function of the bias field at fixed temperatures and as a function of temperature for fixed bias fields was measured for different phases of the investigated AFLC material. A theoretical model describing the pyroelectric response in different phases of AFLC is given, and the experimental results are interpreted. The threshold fields for field induced phase transitions are determined. The type of field induced phase transition from the AF phase in particular is found to be dependent on the temperature within its range. The properties of an unusual ferrielectric phase existing between ferrielectric chiral smectic-C (SmC*) and antiferroelectric AF phases are studied in a great detail. The results confirm that this phase is one of the incommensurate phases, predicted by the axial next-nearest neighbor Ising model and Landau model for this temperature region.

Ellipsometric studies of synclinic and anticlinic arrangements in liquid crystal films

The molecular arrangements in liquid crystal freestanding films are studied when smectic C* surface ordering occurs above the bulk smectic A to smectic C* transition temperature. Details of the resulting structures are resolved using ellipsometry. The behavior of the film is compound dependent. Below a critical electric field, either a synclinic or anticlinic structure may be present depending on the magnitude of the bulk spontaneous polarization. A model is presented in which the low-field anticlinic arrangement results from the interaction between polarization fluctuations at the two surfaces.
