Dispersion and loss limitations on the performance of optical delay lines based on coupled resonant structures.

The relative importance of group-velocity dispersion and loss-induced distortion in limiting the performance of optical delay lines based on coupled resonator structures is investigated. It is shown that for the current state of the quality of fabrication both factors play roughly comparable roles for bit rates of 2.5-40 Gbits/s and that as the storage capacity grows, the relative weight of loss-imposed limitation increases.

Power dissipation in slow light devices: a comparative analysis.

The performance of various slow light schemes is analyzed from the point of view of power dissipation per stored bit. It is shown that the dissipated power increases quite nonlinearly with storage capacity, and that the schemes based on low-loss photonic structures with distributed amplifiers hold indisputable advantage over other schemes.

Performance limits of delay lines based on optical amplifiers.

The performance of tunable buffers based on optical amplifiers and its improvement by use of gain flattening are analyzed. A simple analytical expression is obtained indicating that the gain required to attain tunable storage of N bits increases nonlinearly with N and reaches unrealistically high values for N>5. A comparison with other types of optical delay line is made.

Performance of nonlinear photonic crystal devices at high bit rates.

I investigate theoretically the performance limits for all-optical switching devices incorporating photonic crystals made of nonlinear materials operating at high bit rates. I compare two switching techniques--shifting of the photonic bandgap and the more traditional interferometric method enhanced by slow wave propagation in photonic crystals-and show that the latter always has an advantage. I also demonstrate that the benefits provided by the photonic crystal in the interferometer are still severely limited by the dispersion and become significant only in materials combining high nonlinearity, high index contrast, and high damage threshold.

Expanding the bandwidth of slow-light photonic devices based on coupled resonators.

It is shown theoretically that canceling third-order dispersion can substantially increase the useful bandwidths of linear and nonlinear optical devices based on slow propagation of light. Cancellation on both global and local scales can be achieved by combination of the ring-based coupled resonator lines and all-pass optical filters.

Cost-effective low timing jitter passively Q-switched diode-pumped solid-state laser with composite pumping pulses.

A novel scheme that combines gain switching with passive Q switching of a miniature diode-pumped solid-state laser is proposed and implemented. A composite pumping pulse, consisting of a long, low-intensity pulse and a following short, high-intensity pulse, is used to reduce the timing jitter. A greater-than-tenfold reduction in timing jitter is demonstrated.
