Isolation of a tetrameric cation-cation complex of pentavalent uranyl.

A polymetallic assembly containing mutually coordinated highly reactive UO2+ groups was isolated in the presence of dibenzoylmethanate. NMR studies showed unambiguously the presence of the cation-cation complex in pyridine solution while more polar solvents lead to the disruption of the UO2+/UO2+ interaction and increased stability.

Pyrimidinyl nitronyl nitroxides.

The chemistry of 2,2,4,4-substituted pentane derivatives has been investigated with the aim of providing a flexible and versatile synthetic route to pyrimidinyl nitronyl nitroxides, in which the bis-N-oxy fragment is incorporated in a six-membered ring. The synthesis of 2,4-diamino-2,4-dimethylpentane and 2,4-bis(hydroxylamino)-2,4-dimethylpentane, convenient precursors of these nitroxides, is described and full characterization of a series of pyrimidinyl nitronyl nitroxides is reported, along with a preliminary study of their coordination properties.

Synthesis and structure of a stable pentavalent-uranyl coordination polymer.

The polymeric complex {[UO2Py5][KI2Py2]}n was isolated by controlled oxidation of uranium tris-iodide in pyridine and structurally characterized using X-ray diffraction. The described synthetic method allows us to isolate a stable derivative of the elusive pentavalent UO2+ species providing a potential starting material for the development of anhydrous UO2+ coordination chemistry.

Chiroptical and computational studies of a bridled chiroporphyrin and of its nickel(II), copper(II), and zinc(II) complexes.

Circular dichroism (CD) spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are reported for a series of conformationally bistable chiroporphyrins with 8-methylene bridles MBCP-8, which can display either an alphaalphaalphaalpha or an alphabetaalphabeta orientation of their meso substituents. From DFT geometry optimizations, the most stable form of ZnBCP-8 is found to be the alphaalphaalphaalpha conformer. By passing to NiBCP-8, there is a strong stabilization of the alphabetaalphabeta conformation with respect to the alphaalphaalphaalpha conformation, consistent with the X-ray structures of alphaalphaalphaalpha-ZnBCP-8 and alphabetaalphabeta-NiBCP-8. A correlation between the sign of the CD signal in the Soret region and the conformation of the BCP-8 compounds is reported: the alphaalphaalphaalpha conformers H2BCP-8 and ZnBCP-8 show a positive CD signal, whereas the alphabetaalphabeta conformers NiBCP-8 and CuBCP-8 exhibit a negative signal. The possible contributions to the rotational strengths of alphabetaalphabeta-NiBCP-8 and alphaalphaalphaalpha-ZnBCP-8, calculated on the basis of their crystal structures, have been analyzed. The CD signals are found to result from a combination of both the inherent chirality of the porphyrin and of extrinsic contributions due to the chiral bridles. These results may have a broad significance for understanding the chiroptical properties of chiral porphyrins and hemoproteins and for monitoring stimuli-responsive, conformationally bistable chiroporphyrin compounds.

Calix[4]phyrin based redox architectures: towards new molecular tools for electrochemical sensing.

New redox active molecular macrocyclic architectures characterized by a direct connection between dipyrrin, tripyrrin and ferrocenyl fragments have been synthesized and characterized. Contrarily to fully conjugated porphyrins, in which four pyrrole moieties contribute to the overall aromatic pi-electronic system and behave as a unique electroactive species, calixphyrins can be regarded as an assembly of independent redox active pyrrole and conjugated oligopyrrole fragments linked through sp(3) hybridized meso carbon atoms. The disruption of the conjugation pathway not only multiplies the number of redox centres throughout the molecule but also leads to a large variety of molecular architectures with specific physico-chemical properties. These novel ferrocene containing hybrid macrocycles exhibit especially attractive electronic and structural features suited for use as molecular sensing tools. An efficient voltammetric sensing of exogenic electron rich anionic species could especially be performed using a metallo-calix[4]phyrin-(1.1.1.1) through the displacement of the labile axial binding site, the perturbation of the Fc(0/+) redox couple being directly related to complexed species features.

Practical synthetic routes to solvates of U(OTf)3: X-ray crystal structure of [U(OTf)3(MeCN)3]n, a unique U(III) coordination polymer.

The reaction of UH3 or U metal with triflic acid results in the formation of a mixture of species including U(OTf)4 and leads to the reproducible isolation of the mononuclear U(IV) hydroxo complex [U(OTf)3(OH)(py)4] (1) and the U(IV) dinuclear mu-oxo-complex [{U(OTf)2(py)3}2{mu-O}{mu-OTf}2] (2). The X-ray crystal structures of these complexes have been determined. Analytically pure complex 1 can be prepared in a 17-27% yield providing a good precursor for the synthesis and study of the reactivity of the hydroxo complexes with different coordination environments. Two practical synthetic methods for the preparation of Lewis base adducts of U(OTf)3 are described. Analytically pure [U(OTf)3(py)4] (4) was easily and reproducibly prepared (50-60% yield) by protonolysis of the amide U{N(SiMe3)2}3 with pyridinium triflate in pyridine. Salt metathesis of UI3(thf)4 with potassium triflate in acetonitrile resulted in the complete substitution of the iodide counterions by triflate producing the acetonitrile solvate [U(OTf)3(MeCN)3]n (3). The solid-state structure of 3 shows the formation of a unique U(III) coordination polymer in which the metal ions are connected by three triflates acting as bidentate bridging ligands to form a 1D chain.

Controlled hydrolysis of lanthanide complexes of the N-donor tripod tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine versus bisligand complex formation.

The reaction of the lanthanide salts LnI3(thf)4 and Ln(OTf)3 with tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (tpa) was studied in rigorously anhydrous conditions and in the presence of water. Under rigorously anhydrous conditions the successive formation of mono- and bis(tpa) complexes was observed on addition of 1 and 2 equiv of ligand, respectively. Addition of a third ligand equivalent did not yield additional complexes. The mono(tpa) complex [Ce(tpa)I3] (1) and the bis(tpa) complexes [Ln(tpa)2]X3 (X = I, Ln = La(III) (2), Ln = Ce(III) (3), Ln = Nd(III) (4), Ln = Lu(III) (5); X = OTf, Ln = Eu(III) (6)) were isolated under rigorously anhydrous conditions and their solid-state and solution structures determined. In the presence of water, 1H NMR spectroscopy and ES-MS show that the successive addition of 1-3 equiv of tpa to triflate or iodide salts of the lanthanides results in the formation of mono(tpa) aqua complexes followed by formation of protonated tpa and hydroxo complexes. The solid-state structures of the complexes [Eu(tpa)(H2O)2(OTf)3] (7), [Eu(tpa)(mu-OH)(OTf)2]2 (8), and [Ce(tpa)(mu-OH)(MeCN)(H2O)]2I4 (9) have been determined. The reaction of the bis(tpa) lanthanide complexes with stoichiometric amounts of water yields a facile synthetic route to a family of discrete dimeric hydroxide-bridged lanthanide complexes prepared in a controlled manner. The suggested mechanism for this reaction involves the displacement of one tpa ligand by two water molecules to form the mono(tpa) complex, which subsequently reacts with the noncoordinated tpa to form the dimeric hydroxo species.

The effect of pyridinecarboxylate chelating groups on the stability and electronic relaxation of gadolinium complexes.

The ligand N,N'-bis[(6-carboxy-2-pyridylmethyl]ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetic acid (H(4)bpeda) was synthesised using an improved procedure which requires a reduced number of steps and leads to a higher yield with respect to the published procedure. It was obtained in three steps from diethylpyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate and commercially available ethylenediamine-N,N[prime or minute]-diacetic acid with a total yield of approximately 20%. The crystal structure of the hexa-protonated form of the ligand which was determined by X-ray diffraction shows that the four carboxylates and the two amines are protonated. The crystal structure of the polynuclear complex [Gd(bpeda)(H(2)O)(2)](3)[Gd(H(2)O)(6)](2)Cl(3)(2), isolated by slow evaporation of a 1:1 mixture of GdCl(3) and H(4)bpeda at pH approximately 1, was determined by X-ray diffraction. In complex three [Gd(bpeda)(H(2)O)(2)] units, containing a Gd(III) ion ten-coordinated by the octadentate bpeda and two water molecules, are connected in a pentametallic structure by two hexa-aquo Gd(3+) cations through four carboxylato bridges. The protonation constants (pK(a1)= 2.9(1), pK(a2)= 3.5(1), pK(a3)= 5.2(2), and pK(a4)= 8.5(1)) and the stability constants of the complexes formed between Gd(III) and Ca(II) ions and H(4)bpeda (log beta(GdL)= 15.1(3); log beta(CaL)= 9.4(1)) were determined by potentiometric titration. The unexpected decrease in the stability of the gadolinium complex and of the calcium complex of the octadentate ligand bpeda(4-) with respect to the hexadentate ligand edta(4-) has been interpreted in terms of an overall lower contribution to stability of the metal-nitrogen interactions. The EPR spectra display very broad lines (apparent DeltaH(pp) approximately 800-1200 G at X-band and 90-110 G at Q-band depending on the temperature), indicating a rapid transverse electron spin relaxation. At X-band, Gd(bpeda) is among the fastest relaxing Gd(3+) complexes to date suggesting that the presence of pyridinecarboxylate chelating groups in itself does not lead to slow electron relaxation.

Energetics and structural consequences of axial ligand coordination in nonplanar nickel porphyrins.

The effects of ruffling on the axial ligation properties of a series of nickel(II) tetra(alkyl)porphyrins have been investigated with UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, resonance Raman spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, classical molecular mechanics calculations, and normal-coordinate structural decomposition analysis. For the modestly nonplanar porphyrins, porphyrin ruffling is found to cause a decrease in binding affinity for pyrrolidine and piperidine, mainly caused by a decrease in the binding constant for addition of the first axial ligand; ligand binding is completely inhibited for the more nonplanar porphyrins. The lowered affinity, resulting from the large energies required to expand the core and flatten the porphyrin to accommodate the large high-spin nickel(II) ion, has implications for nickel porphyrin-based molecular devices and the function of heme proteins and methyl-coenzyme M reductase.

Activation of oxaziridines by lewis acids: application in enantioselective sulfoxidation.

The preparation of new and easily accessible chiral N-alkyloxaziridines for asymmetric sulfides oxidation was investigated. Most significantly, we report here that inert N-alkyloxaziridines can be activated by Lewis acids to achieve a fast, selective, and efficient oxygen atom transfer to sulfides. Asymmetric sulfoxidation by three new chiral oxaziridines (two of them were structurally characterized by X-ray analysis) afforded enantioselectivities ranging from 22% to 63% ee with the simplest aryl alkyl sulfides.

High-spin chloro mononuclear MnIII complexes: a multifrequency high-field EPR study.

The isolation, structural characterization, and electronic properties of two six-coordinated chloromanganese (III) complexes, [Mn(terpy)(Cl)3] (1) and [Mn(Phterpy)(Cl)3] (2), are reported (terpy = 2,2':6'2"-terpyridine, Phterpy = 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine). These complexes complement a series of mononuclear azide and fluoride Mn(lll) complexes synthesized with neutral N-tridentate ligands, [Mn(L)(X)3] (X = F- or N3 and L = terpy or bpea [N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-ethylamine)], previously described. Similar to these previous complexes, 1 and 2 exhibit a Jahn-Teller distortion of the octahedron, characteristic of a high-spin Mn(III) complex (S = 2). The analysis of the crystallographic data shows that, in both cases, the manganese ion lies in the center of a distorted octahedron characterized by an elongation along the tetragonal axis. Their electronic properties were investigated by multifrequency EPR (190-475 GHz) performed in the solid state at different temperatures (5-15 K). This study confirms our previous results and further shows that: i) the sign of D is correlated with the nature of the tetragonal distortion; ii) the magnitude of D is not sensitive to the nature of the anions in our series of rhombic complexes, contrary to the porphyrinic systems; iii) the [E/D] values (0.124 for 1 and 0.085 for 2) are smaller compared to those found for the [Mn(L)(X)3] complexes (in the range of 0.146 to 0.234); and iv) the E term increases when the ligand-field strength of the equatorial ligands decreases.

Structural characterization and electronic properties determination by high-field and high-frequency EPR of a series of five-coordinated Mn(II) complexes.

The isolation, structural characterization, and electronic properties of a series of high-spin mononuclear five-coordinated Mn(II) complexes, [Mn(terpy)(X)(2)] (terpy = 2, 2':6',2' '-terpyridine; X = I(-) (1), Br(-) (2), Cl(-) (3), or SCN(-) (4)), are reported. The X-ray structures of the complexes reveal that the manganese ion lies in the center of a distorted trigonal bipyramid for complexes 1, 2, and 4, while complex 3 is better described as a distorted square pyramid. The electronic properties of 1-4 were investigated by high-field and high-frequency EPR spectroscopy (HF-EPR) performed between 5 and 30 K. The powder HF-EPR spectra have been recorded in high-field-limit conditions (95-285 GHz) (D << gbetaB). The spectra are thus simplified, allowing an easy interpretation of the experimental data and an accurate determination of the spin Hamiltonian parameters. The magnitude of D varies between 0.26 and 1.00 cm(-)(1) with the nature of the anionic ligand. Thanks to low-temperature EPR experiments, the sign of D was unambiguously determined. D is positive for the iodo and bromo complexes and negative for the chloro and thiocyano ones. A structural correlation is proposed. Each complex is characterized by a significant rhombicity with E/D values between 0.17 and 0.29, reflecting the distorted geometry observed around the manganese. Finally, we compared the spin Hamiltonian parameters of our five-coordinated complexes and those previously reported for other analogous series of dihalo four- and six-coordinated complexes. The effect of the coordination number and of the geometry of the Mn(II) complexes on the spin Hamiltonian parameters is discussed.

Comparative structural studies of iodide complexes of uranium(III) and lanthanide(III) with hexadentate tetrapodal neutral N-donor ligands.

The syntheses, the solution structures, and the crystal structures of the two new tetrapodal N-donor ligands N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyrazylmethyl)-1,3-trimethylenediamine (tpztn), 1, and N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyrazylmethyl)-trans-1,2-cyclohexanediamine (tpzcn), 2, are described. Two different geometric isomers of the cation [La(tpztn)I(2)](+) were isolated in which the ligand adopts two different conformations leading to strong differences in the metal-ligand bond distances. The crystal structure of isostructural complexes of La, U, Ce, and Nd were determined by X-ray diffraction studies for the ligands tpztn and tpzcn. In both series of complexes the two methylpyrazyl arms and the diamine spacer (trimethylene or cyclohexane) around each aliphatic nitrogen adopt the same helical configuration. The complexes crystallize as a racemic mixture of Lambda,Lambda and Delta,Delta enantiomers with distorted square antiprism geometries. In these complexes the M-N(pyrazine) distances show a decrease from La to Ce and from La to Nd which corresponds well to the decrease in ionic radius as expected in a purely ionic bonding model. Conversely the mean value of the U-N(pyrazine) distances is shorter (0.043(3) A for tpztn and 0.054(11) A for tpzcn) than the mean value of the La-N(pyrazine) distances. These differences are significantly larger than the decrease expected from the variation of the ionic radii and can be interpreted in terms of a stronger M-N interaction for U(III). Previously reported extraction studies have shown that while the tripod tris[(2-pyrazyl)methyl]amine (tpza) containing three pyrazyl nitrogens extracts An(III) preferentially to Ln(III), tpztn and tpzcn display no selectivity despite the presence of four pyrazyl groups connected to a different spacer. The structural studies described here show that despite the lack of selectivity observed in the extraction conditions, the arrangement of pyrazyl nitrogens in the tetrapodal architectures of tpztn and tpzcn allows for metal-ligand interaction similar to that observed for tpza.

Redox-triggered molecular movement in a multicomponent metal complex in solution and in the solid state.

The Cu(I) and Cu(II) complexes of the new 1,8-diferro-cenylmethyl-4,11-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetra-decane ligand (denoted L) have been isolated and characterized by X-ray structure determination and electrochemical studies. The Cu(I) complex presents an unprecedented stability toward dioxygen. The two complexes adopt two energetically distinct and stable geometries, which differ mainly by the relative positioning of the substituents above or below the cyclam plane. Triggered by a copper-centered electron transfer, a fast and reversible motion of the noncoordinating subunits is obtained in homogeneous solution and in the solid state.

Crystallization-induced asymmetric transformation of chiral-at-metal ruthenium(II) complexes bearing achiral ligands.

Recently, we observed that the enantiopure Lambda form of the tributylammonium salt of the chiral anion tris[tetrachlorobenzene-1,2-bis(olato)]phosphate, also named Trisphat, was able to induce an efficient resolution of a Delta,Lambda racemic mixture of cis-[Ru(dmp)2(NCCH3)2](PF6)2 (dmp=2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) due to the spontaneous and selective precipitation of the heterochiral pair [Delta-Ru(dmp)2(CH3CN)2][Lambda-Trisphat]2. We report here that the combination of such a stereoselective precipitation process and irradiation results in the quantitative conversion of the initial [Ru(dmp)2(NCCH3)2]2+ racemate into only one of the two enantiomers. This is the first example in inorganic chemistry of an asymmetric transformation that leads to a chiral complex with no chiral ligand. Finally, three new racemic ruthenium bis(diimine) complexes, namely [Ru(dmp)2(NCCH3)Py](PF6)2 (Py=pyridine), [Ru(dmp)2(1,3-diaminopropane)](PF6)2, and [Ru(dmp)2(ethylenediamine)](PF6)2 were synthesized. For all of them, crystallization-induced asymmetric transformation proved to be an efficient way of obtaining the corresponding optically active chiral-at-metal complexes in high yields and with excellent stereoselectivities.
