A chemical-probe array composed of 47 off-the-shelf dyes was prepared in solution format (New York Tongue 1: NYT-1) and was tested in the identification and quantitation of 47 cation analytes, including 44 metal ions, in addition to H(+), NH(4) (+), and tetrabutylammonium (TBA). The cation solutions were tested in a series of concentrations and the fold-change in effective absorbance was analyzed by principal-component analysis (PCA), hierarchical-cluster analysis (HCA), and nearest-neighbor decision to determine both identity and quantity of the analytes. Apart from alkali-metal ions (Na(+), K(+), Li(+), Cs(+), and Rb(+)), which behave very similarly to each other due mainly to their low response, most of the cations were clearly distinguishable at 10 mM concentration. The practical detection limit of each analyte was also determined by a sequential dilution and the nearest-neighbor decision method. In the finalized working analyte concentration range (approximately 10 mM down to 0.33 microM), by considering alkali metals as one analyte group, most of the analytes were correctly identified (99.4 %). Furthermore, the success rate at which the concentration of each analyte was correctly determined was also high (96.8 %).
To recycle the spent catalyst for the removal of VOCs, the benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) complete oxidations were studied over pretreated palladium based spent catalyst in a fixed bed flow reactor system at atmospheric pressure. Two different pretreatment methods with gas (air and hydrogen) and acid aqueous solution (HCl, H(2)SO(4), HNO(3), H(3)PO(4) and CH(3)COOH) were used to investigate the catalytic activity of spent catalyst. The properties of the spent and pretreated Pd based catalyst were characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, ICP, and XPS. The results of light-off curves indicate that the catalytic activity of toluene oxidation for pretreated samples is in the order of hydrogen>air>HNO(3)>CH(3)COOH>H(2)SO(4)>H(3)PO(4)>HCl. In addition, the air and the acid aqueous pretreated catalyst activities were significantly decreased compared to that of the spent (or parent) catalyst. Moreover, hydrogen pretreated (or reduced) catalysts having mainly metallic form show the best performance in removing the toluene vapours compared to other pretreated samples. The reduction temperature made a significant difference in the catalytic performance of the spent catalyst pretreated with hydrogen. XPS results clearly supported that the palladium state of the spent catalysts pretreated at 300 degrees C was shifted more toward metallic form than other reduced catalysts. Furthermore, the results of a long-term test and catalytic activity of aromatic hydrocarbons also supported that the hydrogen pretreated spent catalyst was a good candidate for removing toxic compounds.
For the first time, a simple and facile approach for the synthesis of diblock codendrimers by fusion between the azide focal point functionalized Fréchet-type polyether and the propargyl focal point functionalized Tomalia-type PAMAM dendrons has been described based on click chemistry, i.e., the copper-catalyzed cycloaddition reaction between alkyne and azide.
The inositol (1,4,5) trisphosphate 3-kinase (ITP3K) phosphorylates Ins (1,4,5) P3 to produce Ins (1,3,4,5) P4. The ITP3K substrate, InsP3, and its product, InsP4, both have the potential to regulate mast cell function. Here, we explore the effects of dominant inhibition of ITP3K upon secretory responses and Ras GTPase activation following antigenic cross-linking of the mast cell immunoreceptor, FcvarepsilonRI. Inhibition of ITP3K potentiates both calcium release from intracellular stores and calcium-dependent secretory responses in mast cells. Moreover, mast cells with dominantly inhibited ITP3K display constitutive activation of Ras and certain Ras effector pathways. We propose three mechanisms by which ITP3K inhibition could influence Ras activation. The protection of InsP3 that results from ITP3K inhibition may lead to enhanced activation of calcium-sensitive Ras-GAPs or -GRFs. Similarly, the deficit in InsP4 may change the behavior of the InsP4 receptor, the GAP1(IP4BP). Our data are inconsistent with calcium-sensitive Ras-GAP activation being the primary consequence of ITP3K inhibition in mast cells. Rather, we observe potentiation of Ras responses in mast cells transfected with dominant negative GAP1(IP4BP). Moreover, shRNA-mediated knockdown of GAP1(IP4BP) potentiates FcvarepsilonRI-mediated Ras activation, indicating that this InsP4-binding GAP protein may be used by the FcvarepsilonRI immunoreceptor to regulate Ras.

This paper describes the synthesis of a tri(ethylene oxide)-attached fourth-generation poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (EO3-dendrimer) and the characterization of its layers on gold. NMR analysis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry revealed that about 61 amine groups of a G4 PAMAM dendrimer were covalently conjugated with tri(ethylene oxide) units, accounting for a 95% modification level. Layers of the EO3-dendrimer were formed on gold, and the resulting surface was characterized by infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and contact angle goniometry. The EO3-dendrimer resulted in more hydrophilic and less compact layers with no substantial deformation of the molecule during layer formation by virtue of the EO3 units, compared to a PAMAM dendrimer. Interestingly, the specific binding of avidin to the biotinylated layers of the EO3-dendrimer approached a surface density of 5.2 +/- 0.2 ngmm-2, showing about 92% of full surface coverage. The layers of the EO3-dendrimer were found to be more resistant to nonspecific adsorption of proteins than PAMAM dendrimer layers when bovine serum albumin and serum proteins were tested.
A novel approach to the noncovalent synthesis of molecular necklaces successfully led to the first quantitative self-assembly of a molecular necklace [6]MN, in which five small rings are threaded on a large ring, from 10 components. Our strategy involves the host-guest complex formation between the molecular host cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) and a guest molecule in which an electron donor and an electron acceptor unit are connected by a rigid linker with a proper angle, to form a cyclic oligomer through the host-stabilized intermolecular charge-transfer (CT) complex formation. In the structure of the molecular necklace [6]MN, five molecules of the guest form a cyclic framework by the intermolecular CT interactions, on which five CB[8] molecules are threaded with an arrangement reminiscent of a five-fold propeller. The molecular necklace measures approximately 3.7 nm in diameter and approximately 1.8 nm in thickness.
A novel supramolecular polymer (poly(pseudorotaxane)) in which the repeating units are linked by host-stabilized charge-transfer interaction between the guest molecules is grown on gold and characterized.
cis-Diaminostilbene dihydrochloride encapsulated in cucurbit[7]uril does not spontaneously isomerize to the trans isomer at room temperature as a result of the strong host-guest interactions including strong hydrogen bonds between the two protonated amine termini of the C-shaped guest and the portal oxygen atoms of the host.

A long-standing problem in cucurbituril chemistry is answered through the first direct functionalization of cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]; n = 5-8)) leading to perhydroxyCB[n] which can be further modified to provide tailored CB[n] derivatives with desired functional groups and good solubility. Anchoring a CB[6] derivative on the surface and its potential application as a sensor are demonstrated. A CB[6] derivative forms nanospheres with possible use in protein and peptide drug delivery.

[reaction: see text] To improve upon the previous orthogonal method for synthesis of a triazine library, an alternative strategy has been developed via oxidation-activation of the thioether to the sulfone. Through a comparison between these two methods, the sulfone strategy was demonstrated as an enhanced method in the generation of highly pure triazine library compounds.
The supramolecular chemistry of cucurbituril, a synthetic receptor, is fascinating because of the remarkable guest binding behavior of the host. Studies in the field, however, have met with limitations, since the only species known was the hexameric macrocyclic compound, cucurbit[6]uril. Recently we synthesized its homologues, cucurbit[n]uril (n = 5, 7, 8), and derivatives. These new members of the cucurbituril family have expanded the scope further, and interest in them has grown enormously. This Account is a compilation of recent literature covering the syntheses of the homologues and derivatives, and their supramolecular chemistry.
