A quantitative structure-function relationship for the Photosystem II reaction center: supermolecular behavior in natural photosynthesis.

Light-induced charge separation is the primary photochemical event of photosynthesis. Efficient charge separation in photosynthetic reaction centers requires the balancing of electron and excitation energy transfer processes, and in Photosystem II (PSII), these processes are particularly closely entangled. Calculations that treat the cofactors of the PSII reaction center as a supermolecular complex allow energy and electron transfer reactions to be described in a unified way. This calculational approach is shown to be in good agreement with experimentally observed energy and electron transfer dynamics. This supermolecular view also correctly predicts the effect of changing the redox potentials of cofactors by site-directed mutagenesis, thus providing a unified and quantitative structure-function relationship for the PSII reaction center.

Control of charge recombination dynamics in dye sensitized solar cells by the use of conformally deposited metal oxide blocking layers.

We report herein a methodology for conformally coating nanocrystalline TiO2 films with a thin overlayer of a second metal oxide. SiO2, Al2O3, and ZrO2 overlayers were fabricated by dipping mesoporous, nanocrystalline TiO2 films in organic solutions of their respective alkoxides, followed by sintering at 435 degrees C. These three metal oxide overlayers are shown in all cases to act as barrier layers for interfacial electron transfer processes. However, experimental measurements of film electron density and interfacial charge recombination dynamics under applied negative bias were vary significantly for the overlayers. A good correlation was observed between these observations and the point of zero charge of the different metal oxides. On this basis, it is found that the most basic overlayer coating, Al2O3 (pzc = 9.2), is optimal for retarding interfacial recombination losses under negative applied bias. These observations show good correlation with current/voltage analyses of dye sensitized solar cell fabricated from these films, with the Al2O3 resulting in an increase in V(oc) of up to 50 mV and a 35% improvement in overall device efficiency. These observations are discussed and compared with an alternative TiCl4 posttreatment of nanocrystalline TiO2 films with regard to optimizing device efficiency.

Preparation and characterisation of novel thick sol-gel titania film photocatalysts.

The preparation and characterization of thick (9 microns), clear, mechanically robust and photocatalytically active films of nanocrystalline anatase titania are described. XRD and SEM analysis show the films comprise 13 nm particles of anatase TiO2. Thin (54 nm) films of the 'paste' TiO2, along with sol-gel titania films made by a more traditional route are also prepared and characterised. All titania films mediate the photocatalytic destruction of stearic acid with a quantum yield of 0.0016 +/- 0.0003, using either 365 nm (i.e. BLB) or 254 nm (germicidal) light. P25 TiO2 films also appear to mediate the same process with a similar formal quantum efficiency. Of all the films tested, the thick paste TiO2 films are the most ideally suited for use with near UV light, for reasons which are discussed. All the titania films tested exhibit photoinduced superhydrophilicity.
