What we know and what we still need to learn.

Research has changed the conceptualization of the causes and consequences of violence. Yet some questions remain unanswered. Infants and young children have largely been overlooked, and intraethnic and cultural group variations have not been addressed. There is still a need to address macro-level systematic discrimination in the health care system along with the intrapersonal physiological changes that result from exposure to violence. Fortunately, studies are beginning to show how longitudinal and intervention research can be safely conducted.

Resilience in sheltered battered women.

While many battered women report physical and psychological distress, others are able to respond to adverse sequelae with less severe outcomes. The findings of this study indicate that resilience assessed by the Resilience Scale was significantly and inversely correlated with three global measures and five subscales of the Symptom Checklist-90R. Further study of battered women's resilience will allow for greater appreciation of their strengths as well as expand understanding of human responses to trauma.

Strengthening an academic nursing center through partnership.

Nurse-managed health centers offer holistic health care and patient-centered health promotion and disease prevention. These goals are particularly well suited to the needs of children and their families. Few reports in the literature, however, have described such practices. The purpose of this paper is to describe one practice, Valencia Health Services (VHS), a nurse-managed, academic health center providing primary care to pediatric and adolescent patients. Valencia Health Services offers interdisciplinary, comprehensive health services to ethnically diverse children and their families through an inter-university partnership and provides clinical experiences and research opportunities, under the supervision of expert faculty-clinicians, to students of nursing (advanced practice, public health, and case management), social work and psychology. Valencia Health Services is the rare nurse-managed academic health center that provides comprehensive health care to children and adolescents. The multifaceted demands of such a health center, however, present both unique opportunities for quality care and service and considerable ongoing challenges.

Sleep disturbance in battered women living in transitional housing.

This study describes objective and subjective sleep in a convenience sample of 29 battered women living in specialized transitional housing programs compared to 30 women living in their own stable home environment. Compared to healthy controls, battered women living in transitional housing experienced longer sleep onset latencies by both subjective and objective measures and higher percentage of time awake during the night by objective measure. Poor sleep quality may reflect the relative contributions of less total sleep time, difficulty falling asleep, and more awakenings during the night rather than just one aspect of disturbed sleep. Findings suggest that battered women in transitional housing programs may improve daytime alertness and benefit from interventions directed toward reducing sleep onset latency as well as increasing total sleep time.
