Viscous fingering as a paradigm of interfacial pattern formation: recent results and new challenges.

We review recent results on dynamical aspects of viscous fingering. The Saffman-Taylor instability is studied beyond linear stability analysis by means of a weakly nonlinear analysis and the exact determination of the subcritical branch. A series of contributions pursuing the idea of a dynamical solvability scenario associated to surface tension in analogy with the traditional selection theory is put in perspective and discussed in the light of the asymptotic theory of Tanveer and co-workers. The inherently dynamical singular effects of surface tension are clarified. The dynamical role of viscosity contrast is explored numerically. We find that the basin of attraction of the Saffman-Taylor finger depends on viscosity contrast, and that the sensitivity to this parameter is maximal in the usual limit of high viscosity contrast. The competing attractors are identified as closed bubble solutions. We briefly report on recent results and work in progress concerning rotating Hele-Shaw flows, topological singularities and wetting effects, and also discuss future directions in the context of viscous fingering.

Kinetic roughening in two-phase fluid flow through a random Hele-Shaw cell.

A nonlocal interface equation is derived for two-phase fluid flow, with arbitrary wettability and viscosity contrast, c=(mu(1)-mu(2))/(mu(1)+mu(2)), in a model porous medium defined as a Hele-Shaw cell with random gap b(0)+delta b. Fluctuations of both capillary and viscous pressure are explicitly related to the microscopic quenched disorder, yielding conserved, nonconserved, and power-law correlated noise terms. Two length scales are identified that control the possible scaling regimes and which scale with capillary number Ca as l(1) approximately b(0)(cCa)(-1/2) and l(2) approximately b(0)Ca-1. Exponents for forced fluid invasion are obtained from numerical simulation and compared with recent experiments.

Diffusion coefficient of propagating fronts with multiplicative noise.

Recent studies have shown that in the presence of noise, both fronts propagating into a metastable state and so-called pushed fronts propagating into an unstable state, exhibit diffusive wandering about the average position. In this paper, we derive an expression for the effective diffusion coefficient of such fronts, which was motivated before on the basis of a multiple scale ansatz. Our systematic derivation is based on the decomposition of the fluctuating front into a suitably positioned average profile plus fluctuating eigenmodes of the stability operator. While the fluctuations of the front position in this particular decomposition are a Wiener process on all time scales, the fluctuations about the time-averaged front profile relax exponentially.
