Bis-dinuclear (Cu-Gd)2 complexes with a probable helicate structure.

Two ligands have been designed to simultaneously favour complexation of 3d and 4f metal ions and the formation of helical structures. This synthetic strategy has allowed the isolation of two bis-dinuclear (Cu-Gd)(2) complexes [L(i)(2)Cu(2)Gd(2)(NO(3))(6)] derived from 3-alkoxysalicylaldehyde and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane. The magnetic data shows that both bis-dinuclear complexes behave as two practically independent (Cu-Gd) pairs, each presenting a ferromagnetic interaction (J= 4.6 cm(-1)). Very weak additional antiferromagnetic interactions, probably originating from intra- and/or intermolecular [small pi] stackings, are suggested by the decrease in chiMT below 8 K.

Synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties of novel mononuclear, tetranuclear, and 1D chain Mn(III) complexes involving three related asymmetrical trianionic ligands.

The manganese(III) complexes studied in this report derive from asymmetrical trianionic ligands abbreviated H(3)L(i) (i = 4-6). These ligands are obtained through reaction of salicylaldehyde with "half-units", the latter resulting from monocondensation of different diamines with phenylsalicylate,. Upon deprotonation, L(i) (i = 4-6) possess an inner N(2)O(2) coordination site with one amido, one imine, and two phenoxo functions, and an outer amido oxygen donor. The trianionic character of such ligands yields original neutral complexes with the L/Mn stoichiometry. The crystal and molecular structures of three complexes have been determined at 190 K (1) or 180 K (2 and 3). Complex 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P (No. 2): a = 7.8582(14) A, b = 10.9225(16) A, c = 12.4882(18) A, alpha = 67.231(14) degrees, beta = 72.134(14) degrees, gamma = 82.589(13) degrees, V = 940.6(3) A(3), Z = 2. Complex 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn (Nuomicron. 60): a = 23.8283(15) A, b = 11.1605(7) A, c = 26.152(2) A, V = 6954.8(8) A(3), Z = 8, while complex 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c (No. 14) with a = 11.7443(14) A, b = 7.5996(10) A, c = 18.029(2) A, beta = 100.604(10) degrees, V = 1581.6(3) A(3), Z = 4. Owing to hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stackings, the mononuclear neutral molecules of 1 are arranged in a 2D network while complexes 2 and 3 are tetranuclear and polymeric (1D chain) species, respectively, owing to the bridging ability of the oxygen atom of the amido function. The experimental magnetic susceptibilities of complexes 2 and 3 indicate the occurrence of similarly weak Mn(III)-Mn(III) antiferromagnetic interactions (J = -1.1 cm(-1)). Single ion zero-field splitting of manganese(III) must be taken into account for satisfactorily fitting the data by exact calculation of the energy levels associated to the spin Hamiltonian through diagonalization of the full matrix for axial symmetry in 2 (J = - 1.1 cm(-1), D(1) = 2.2 cm(-1), D(2) = -2.8 cm(-1)), D(1) and D(2) being associated to the six- and five-coordinate Mn ions, respectively. A weaker antiferromagnetic interaction (J = - 0.2 cm(-1)) operates through pi-pi stacking in complex 1. Complex 3 is a weak ferromagnet (ordering temperature approximately 7 K) as a result of the spin canting originating from the crystal packing.

Iron(II) carboxylate complexes based on a tetraimidazole ligand as models of the photosynthetic non-heme ferrous sites: synthesis, crystal structure, and Mössbauer and magnetic studies.

The preparations, X-ray structures, and detailed physical characterization are presented for new complexes involving an iron(II) center, a tetraimidazole ligand (TIM), and different carboxylates. [Fe(TIM)(C(6)H(5)CH(2)CO(2))](ClO(4)) (1) crystallizes in the Pbca space group with a = 10.8947(13), b = 20.343(2), and c = 22.833(3) A, Z = 8, and V = 5060.6(11) A(3). [Fe(TIM)(CH(3)CO(2))](ClO(4)) (2) crystallizes in the Ia space group with a = 17.117(2), b = 10.3358(12), and c = 25.658(3) A, beta = 90.301(13) degrees, Z = 8, and V = 4539.5(9) A(3). In both structures, the iron(II) is hexacoordinated to the four N(imidazole) donors of the TIM ligand and the two O donors of a bidentate carboxylate. The flexibility of the carboxylate bidentate coordination, symmetrical or more or less asymmetrical, associated with the steric demand of the TIM ligand results in a remarkable versatility of the Fe(II)N(4)O(2) coordination geometry. The diversity in carboxylate bidentate coordination modes has allowed us to clearly show the importance of the structural and electronic effects, through IR and Mössbauer spectroscopy, of this apparently tenuous carboxylate shift. Comparison of the structural and Mössbauer properties of these complexes with the non-heme ferrous site of photosynthetic systems (i) shows that the metric parameters of site 2b, including the symmetrically chelated bidentate carboxylate, are closer to those of the non-heme ferrous site in the bacterial reaction centers of Rhodopseudomonas viridis and R. sphaeroides and (ii) suggests that the ligand environment of the non-heme ferrous center of PS 2 is close to the axially distorted octahedral symmetry resulting from an asymmetrical bidentate coordination of the -CO(2) motif, as in complex 1.

New poly-iron(II) complexes of N4O dinucleating Schiff bases and pseudohalides: syntheses, structures, and magnetic and Mössbauer properties.

Six dinuclear ferrous complexes including [Fe2(acpypentO)(O2CMe)(NCS)2] (1), [Fe2(acpypentO)(O2CMe)(NCSe)2] (2), [Fe2(acpypentO)(NCO)3] (3), ([Fe2(acpybutO)(O2CMe)(NCS)2] (5), [Fe2(acpybutO)(O2CMe)(NCO)2] (6), and [Fe2(acpybutO)(O2CMe)(N3)2] (7), one tetranuclear (bis-dinuclear) ferrous compound, [Fe4(acpypentO)2(N3)6] (4), and one mononuclear ferrous compound, [Fe(acpybutOH)(NCS)2] (8), have been prepared, and their structures and magnetic and Mössbauer properties have been studied (acpybutOH = 1,4-bis[[2-pyridyl(1-ethyl]imino)]butane-2-ol and acpypentOH = 1,5-bis[[2-pyridyl(1-ethyl]imino)]pentane-3-ol). The X-ray diffraction analyses yielded the following results: 1 (C23H26Fe2N6O3S2, monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 8.0380(7) A, b = 12.4495(8) A, c = 27.358(2) A, beta = 92.180(10) degrees, V = 2735.7(4) A(3), Z = 4) is a dinuclear species in which the unequivalent high-spin (HS) Fe(II) sites are bridged by the alkoxo oxygen atom of the symmetrical acpypentO- Schiff base and one syn-syn acetato anion; 3 (C22H23Fe2N7O4, triclinic, Ponemacr;, a = 8.4152(10) A, b = 9.1350(10) A, c = 17.666(2) A, alpha = 97.486(14) degrees, beta = 100.026(14) degrees, gamma = 113.510(13) degrees, V = 1195.9(2) A3, Z = 2) is a dinuclear species in which the unequivalent HS Fe(II) sites are bridged by the alkoxo oxygen atom of the symmetrical acpypentO- Schiff base and one end-on NCO anion; 4-MeOH (C39H50Fe4N26O3, triclinic, Ponemacr;, a = 9.1246(11) A, b = 10.2466(11) A, c = 14.928(2) A, alpha = 91.529(15) degrees, beta = 101.078(16) degrees, gamma = 106.341(14) degrees, V = 1309.6(3) A3, Z = 1) is a bis-dinuclear species in which the unequivalent HS Fe(II) sites are bridged by the alkoxo oxygen atom of the symmetrical acpypentO- Schiff base and one end-on N(3)(-) anion, and the symmetry related Fe(II) sites are bridged by two end-on N3- anions; 8-MeOH (C21H26FeN6O2S2, triclinic, Ponemacr;, a = 8.7674(9) A, b = 12.0938(13) A, c = 12.2634(14) A, alpha = 106.685(14) degrees, beta = 93.689(14) degrees, gamma = 108.508(13) degrees, V = 1163.7(2) A3, Z = 2) is a mononuclear species in which the octahedral low-spin (LS) Fe(II) site is in an N6 environment provided by the four N atoms of the protonated asymmetrical acpybutOH Schiff base and two thiocyanato anions. The Mössbauer spectra of all dinuclear species (1-3 and 5-7), and of the bis-dinuclear compound 4, evidence two distinct HS Fe(II) sites while the Mössbauer spectra of the mononuclear compound 8 evidence a LS Fe(II) site over the 80-300 K temperature range. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility was fitted with J = -13.7 cm(-1), D = -1.8 cm(-1), and g = 2.096 for 1; J = 3.0 cm(-1), D(1) = 1.6 cm(-1), E(1) = -0.35 cm(-1) (lambda(1) = 0.22), D2 = - 12.2 cm(-1), E2 = 1.1 cm(-1) (lambda2 = 0.09), and g = 2.136 for 3; and J(1) = - 0.09 cm(-1), J(2) = 15.9 cm(-1), D(1) = 5.7 cm(-1), D(2) = 12.1 cm(-1), and g = 1.915 for 4. The nature of the ground state in 3 and 4 was confirmed by simulation of the magnetization curves at 2 and 5 K. The intradinuclear interaction through the central O(alkoxo) of the acpypentO- ligand and one pseudohalide bridges is ferromagnetic in 3 (end-on cyanato) while it is very weakly antiferromagnetic in 4 (end-on azido). The interdinuclear interaction through two end-on azido bridges (4) is ferromagnetic as expected. In agreement with the symmetry of the two iron sites of complexes 3 and 4, the fits show that D2 (tetragonal pyramid) is larger than D1 (distorted trigonal bipyramid (3) or distorted octahedron (4)).

Synthesis, characterisation and catalase-like activity of dimanganese(III) complexes of 1,5-bis(5-X-salicylidenamino)pentan-3-ol (X=nitro and chloro).

The dimanganese(III,III) complexes [Mn(2)(III)(5-NO(2)-salpentO)(mu-AcO)(mu-MeO)(methanol)(2)]Y (1: Y=Br, 2a: Y=I, 2b: Y=I(3)), [Mn(2)(III)(5-NO(2)-salpentO)(mu-AcO)(mu-MeO)(methanol)(ClO(4))] (3) and [Mn(2)(III)(5-Cl-salpentO)(mu-AcO)(mu-MeO)(methanol)(2)]Br (4), where salpentOH is the symmetrical Schiff base ligand 1,5-bis(salicylidenamino)pentan-3-ol, were synthesised and structurally characterized. Complex 2b crystallises in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, and exhibits Mn. . .Mn separation of 2.911 A. This Mn. . .Mn separation is very close to the other characterized (mu-alkoxo)(2)(mu-acetato)Mn(2)(III) complexes of X-salpentOH (X=MeO, Br and H) and reveals that the aromatic substituent has little influence on the geometric parameters of the bimetallic core. A correlation between the electronic character of the different ring substituents, the redox potentials of the dinuclear complexes and their catalase activity was evidenced. Complexes 1-4 show saturation kinetics with [H(2)O(2)] and the H(2)O(2) disproportionation involves redox cycling between the Mn(2)(III)/Mn(2)(IV) levels. The catalytic activity studies show that bound acetate is required for catalase activity and that the acetato and alkoxo bridges serve as internal bases facilitating the proton transfer coupled to oxidation of the metal centre.

Interlayer interaction of two-dimensional layered spin crossover complexes [FeIIH3L(Me)][FeIIL(Me)]X (X-=ClO4-, BF4-, PF6-, AsF6-, and SbF6-; H3L(Me)=tris[2-(((2-methylimidazol-4-yl)methylidene)amino)ethyl]amine).

A series of two-dimensional (2D) spin crossover complexes, [FeIIH3L(Me)][FeIIL(Me)]X (X-=ClO4-, BF4-, PF6-, AsF6-, SbF6-) 1-5, have been synthesized, where H3L(Me) denotes an hexadentate N6 tripodlike ligand containing three imidazole groups, tris[2-(((2-methylimidazol-4-yl)methylidene)amino)ethyl]amine. Compounds 1-5 exhibit a two-step (HS-[FeIIH3L(Me)](2+) + HS-[FeIIL(Me)]-) <--> (HS-[FeIIH3L(Me)](2+) + LS-[FeIIL(Me)]-) <--> (LS-[FeIIH3L(Me)](2+) + LS-[FeIIL(Me)]-) spin-transition. The crystal structure of [FeIIH3L(Me)][FeIIL(Me)]PF6 (3) was determined at 295, 200, and 100 K. The structure consists of homochiral extended 2D puckered sheets, in which the complementary [FeIIH3L(Me)](2+) and [FeIIL(Me)]- capped tripodlike components, linked together by imidazole-imidazolate hydrogen bonds, are alternately arrayed in an up-and-down mode. The Fe-N bond distances and angles revealed that the FeII sites of both constituting units are in the high-spin (HS) state at 295 K; at 200 K, the FeII sites of [FeIIH3L(Me)](2+) and [FeIIL(Me)]- are in the HS and low-spin (LS) states, respectively. The FeII sites of both constituting units are in the LS state at 100 K. The size of the counteranion affects significantly the intra- and interlayer interactions leading to modifications of the spin crossover behavior. The onset of the second spin-transition of the ClO4- (1) and BF4- (2) salts adjoins the first spin-transition, while a mixed (HS-[FeIIH3L(Me)](2+) + LS-[FeIIL(Me)]-) spin-state spans a temperature range as wide as 70 K for salts 3-5 with larger counteranions, PF6-, AsF6-, and SbF6-, respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 showed remarkable LIESST (light induced excited spin state trapping) and reverse-LIESST effects, whereas 3-5 showed no remarkable LIESST effect. The interlayer interaction due to the size of the counteranion is an important factor governing the spin crossover behavior and LIESST effect.

A new family of spin crossover complexes with a tripod ligand containing three imidazoles: synthesis, characterization, and magnetic properties of [FeIIH3LMe](NO3)2.1.5H2O, [FeIIILMe].3.5H2O, [FeIIH3LMe][FeIILMe]NO3, and [FeIIH3LMe][FeIIILMe](NO3)2 (H3LMe) = Tris[2-(((2-methylimidazol-4-yl)methylidene)amino)ethyl]amine).

A new family of spin crossover complexes, [Fe(II)H(3)L(Me)](NO(3))(2).1.5H(2)O (1), [Fe(III)L(Me)].3.5H(2)O (2), [Fe(II)H(3)L(Me)][Fe(II)L(Me)]NO(3) (3), and [Fe(II)H(3)L(Me)][Fe(III)L(Me)](NO(3))(2) (4), has been synthesized and characterized, where H(3)L(Me) denotes a hexadentate N(6) tripod ligand containing three imidazole groups, tris[2-(((2-methylimidazol-4-yl)methylidene)amino)ethyl]amine. It was found that the spin and oxidation states of the iron complexes with this tripod ligand are tuned by the degree of deprotonation of the imidazole groups and by the 2-methyl imidazole substituent. Magnetic susceptibility and Mössbauer studies revealed that 1 is an HS-Fe(II) complex, 2 exhibits a spin equilibrium between HS and LS-Fe(III), 3 exhibits a two-step spin transition, where the component [Fe(II)L(Me)](-) with the deprotonated ligand participates in the spin transition process in the higher temperature range and the component [Fe(II)H(3)L(Me)](2+) with the neutral ligand participates in the spin transition process in the lower temperature range, and 4 exhibits spin transition of both the Fe(II) and Fe(III) sites. The crystal structure of 3 consists of homochiral extended 2D puckered sheets, in which the capped tripodlike components [Fe(II)H(3)L(Me)](2+) and [Fe(II)L(Me)](-) are alternately arrayed in an up-and-down mode and are linked by the imidazole-imidazolate hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, the adjacent 2D homochiral sheets are stacked in the crystal lattice yielding a conglomerate as confirmed by the enantiomeric circular dichorism spectra. Compounds 3 and 4 showed the LIESST (light induced excited spin state trapping) and reverse-LIESST effects upon irradiation with green and red light, respectively.

A novel tetranuclear copper(II) complex with alternating mu 1,1-azido and phenoxo bridges: synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of [Cu4(mu-salen)2(mu 1,1-N3)2(N3)2].

A novel tetranuclear copper(II) complex containing alternating mu(1,1)-azido and monophenoxo bridges has been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray single-crystal analysis, and variable-temperature magnetic measurements. The magnetic behavior, investigated in the temperature range 2-300 K, indicates that the interactions between copper ions are antiferromagnetic in nature for both azido and phenoxo bridges. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility was fitted with J(1) = -12.8 cm(-1), J(2) = -10 cm(-1), g = 2.171, 2.1% paramagnetic component, and negligible temperature-independent paramagnetism (5 x 10(-8)). At variance with the earlier reports of these types of complexes containing a mu(1,1)-azido group, the end-on double-azido-bridged copper(II) center in this complex shows an antiferromagnetic interaction.

Synthesis, X-ray crystal structure, and redox and electronic properties of iron(III)-polyimidazole complexes relevant to the metal sites of iron proteins.

A new tripod N(3) ligand (L), containing three imidazole rings, was synthesized in good yield. At variance with usual aromatic ligands with N(2) or N(3) donor sets such as pyridine or pyrazole derivatives, L stabilizes the Fe(III) oxidation state. The corresponding iron(III) complexes [Fe(L)Cl(3)] (1) and [Fe(L)(2)](ClO(4))(3) (2) were prepared and characterized by X-ray structural analysis and spectroscopic methods. The coordination environment around all the Fe(III) centers has a distorted octahedral geometry. [Fe(L)Cl(3)] (1) belongs to the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, a = 9.7406(5) A, b = 17.207(2) A, c = 14.615(2) A, beta = 104.448(9)(o) Z = 4, V = 2372.1(4) A(3); R = 0.044, R(w) = 0.055. [Fe(L)(2)](ClO(4))(3) (2) belongs to the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, a = 16.1057(15) A, b = 11.1079(12) A, c = 26.283(2) A, beta = 102.062(10)(o), Z = 4, V = 4598.2(8) A(3); R = 0.0465, R(w) = 0.0902. The Fe-N((i)PrIm) bond lengths are systematically longer than the Fe-N(MeIm) ones. Compound 2 is a highly anisotropic low-spin Fe(III) complex displaying a rather unusual EPR spectrum with a sharp signal at g = 3.5 and a broad one at g approximately 1.6. The fitting of this EPR spectrum is discussed.

Mass effect on the equienergetic high-spin/low-spin states of spin-crossover in 4,4'-bipyridine-bridged iron(II) polymeric compounds: synthesis, structure, and magnetic, Mössbauer, and theoretical studies.

The suitability of the system [Fe(4,4'-bipy)(H(2)O)(2)(NCX)(2)].(4,4'-bipy), where 4,4'-bipy stands for 4,4'-bipyridine and X = S (1) and Se (2), as a precursor for the synthesis of new polymeric spin-crossover compounds has been studied. The reaction of 1 or 2 with bt (2,2'-bithiazoline) afforded the polymeric compounds of formula [Fe(4,4'-bipy)(bt)(NCX)(2)] (X = S (3), Se (4)). Compounds 3 and 4 are isostructural, but only the crystal structure of 3 has been fully determined. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, Fdd2 space group, Z = 24, with a = 38.962(8) A, b = 11.545(2) A, c = 30.889(6) A, V = 13895(5) A(3). The structure consists of linear chains constituted by trans-4,4'-bipy linked iron(II) ions; two cis equatorial positions are occupied by two pseudohalide ligands, and the remaining positions are filled by the bidentate bt ligand. Investigation of their magnetic properties and Mössbauer spectra has revealed the occurrence of a low-spin (LS) <--> high-spin (HS) conversion involving 12% (3, S) and 20% (4, Se) of the Fe(II) ions. The thermal variation of the HS fraction is gradual with onset temperatures as low as 60 K. A theoretical approach based on the Ising-like model, completed with molecular vibrations, through harmonic oscillators, fits the data successfully, leading to an energy gap of 65 cm(-1) (3) and 86 cm(-1) (4) between the lowest LS and HS levels, and an average vibration frequency ohgrmacr;(LS) of 382 cm(-1) (3) and 365 cm(-1) (4) in the LS state. The ca. 1.05 omega(LS(3))/omega(LS(4)) ratio is close to the ca. 1.09 Se/S molar mass ratio. The simple electrovibrational Ising-like model permits us to explain, for the first time, a mass effect through the molecular vibrations in a spin-crossover complex that is in the unusual situation of equienergy among the HS and LS states.

Novel rectangular [Fe4(mu4-OHO)(mu-OH)(2)](7+) versus "butterfly" [Fe4(mu3-O2](8+) core topology in the Fe(III)/RCO2(-)/phen reaction systems (R = Me, Ph; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline): preparation and properties of [Fe4(OHO)(OH)(2)(O2CMe)(4)(phen)(4)](ClO4)(3), [Fe4O2(O2CPh)(7)(phen)(2)](ClO4), and [Fe4O2(O2CPh)(8)(phen)(2)].

The preparations, X-ray structures, and detailed physical characterizations are presented for three new tetranuclear Fe(III)/RCO(2)(-)/phen complexes, where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline: [Fe(4)(OHO)(OH)(2)(O(2)CMe)(4)(phen)(4)](ClO(4))(3).4.4MeCN.H(2)O (1.4.4MeCN.H(2)O); [Fe(4)O(2)(O(2)CPh)(7)(phen)(2)](ClO(4)).2MeCN (2.2MeCN); [Fe(4)O(2)(O(2)CPh)(8)(phen)(2)].2H(2)O (3.2H(2)O). Complex 1.4.4MeCN.H(2)O crystallizes in space group P2(1)/n, with a = 18.162(9) A, b = 39.016(19) A, c = 13.054(7) A, beta = 104.29(2) degrees, Z = 4, and V = 8963.7 A(3). Complex 2.2MeCN crystallizes in space group P2(1)/n, with a = 18.532(2) A, b = 35.908(3) A, c = 11.591(1) A, beta = 96.42(1) degrees, Z = 4, and V = 7665(1) A(3). Complex 3.2H(2)O crystallizes in space group I2/a, with a = 18.79(1) A, b = 22.80(1) A, c = 20.74(1) A, beta = 113.21(2) degrees, Z = 4, and V = 8166(1) A(3). The cation of 1 contains the novel [Fe(4)(mu(4)-OHO)(mu-OH)(2)](7+) core. The core structure of 2 and 3 consists of a tetranuclear bis(mu(3)-O) cluster disposed in a "butterfly" arrangement. Magnetic susceptibility data were collected on 1-3 in the 2-300 K range. For the rectangular complex 1, fitting the data to the appropriate theoretical chi(M) vs T expression gave J(1) = -75.4 cm(-1), J(2) = -21.4 cm(-1), and g = 2.0(1), where J(1) and J(2) refer to the Fe(III)O(O(2)CMe)(2)Fe(III) and Fe(III)(OH)Fe(III) pairwise exchange interactions, respectively. The S = 0 ground state of 1 was confirmed by 2 K magnetization data. The data for 2 and 3 reveal a diamagnetic ground state with antiferromagnetic exchange interactions among the four high-spin Fe(III) ions. The exchange coupling constant J(bb) ("body-body" interaction) is indeterminate due to prevailing spin frustration, but the "wing-body" antiferromagnetic interaction (J(wb)) was evaluated to be -77.6 and -65.7 cm(-1) for 2 and 3, respectively, using the appropriate spin Hamiltonian approach. Mössbauer spectra of 1-3 are consistent with high-spin Fe(III) ions. The data indicated asymmetry of the Fe(4) core of 1 at 80 K, which is not detected at room temperature due to thermal motion of the core. The spectra of 2 and 3 analyze as two quadrupole-split doublets which were assigned to the body and wing-tip pairs of metal ions. (1)H NMR spectra are reported for 1-3 with assignment of the main resonances.

Dinuclear (Fe(II), Gd(III)) complexes deriving from hexadentate Schiff bases: synthesis, structure, and Mössbauer and magnetic properties.

The dinuclear (Fe(II), Gd(III)) complexes studied in this report derive from hexadentate Schiff base ligands abbreviated H(2)L(i)() (i = 1, 2, 3). H(2)L(1) = N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,3-diamino-2,2'-dimethyl-propane, H(2)L(2) = N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,2-diamino-2-methylpropane, and H(2)L(3) = N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane. The crystal and molecular structures of three complexes have been determined at 160 K. Depending on the solvent used in the preparation, L(1)Fe(CH(3)OH)Gd(NO(3))(3)(CH(3)OH)(2), 1, or L(1)Fe((CH(3))(2)CO)Gd(NO(3))(3), 1', is obtained from H(2)L(1). A similar complex, L(2)Fe((CH(3))(2)CO)Gd(NO(3))(3), 2, is obtained from H(2)L(2). Complex 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pca2(1) (No. 29): a = 22.141(3) A, b = 9.4159(16) A, c = 15.2075(17) A, V = 3170.4(7) A(3), Z = 4. Complexes 1' and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c (No. 14): 1', a = 9.6264(17) A, b = 19.662(3) A, c = 16.039(3) A, beta = 95.15(2) degrees, V = 3023.6(9) A(3), Z = 4; 2, a = 9.7821(13) A, b = 18.7725(17) A, c = 16.100(2) A, beta = 96.497(16) degrees, V = 2937.5(6) A(3), Z = 4. Complexes 1, 1', and 2 possess an Fe(O(phenoxo))(2-)Gd core. The mononuclear L(3)Fe complex could be prepared from H(2)L(3) but not the related dinuclear (Fe, Gd) species. Mössbauer spectroscopy evidences that the iron center is in the +2 oxidation state for the six complexes. The experimental magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data of complexes 1, 1', and 2 indicate the occurrence of weak Fe(II)-Gd(III) ferromagnetic interactions. Single ion zero-field splitting of the iron(II) must be taken into account for satisfactorily fitting the data by exact calculation of the energy levels associated to the spin Hamiltonian through diagonalization of the full matrix for axial symmetry (1, J = 0.50 cm(-1), D = 2.06 cm(-1); 1', J = 0.41 cm(-1), D = 3.22 cm(-1); 2, J = 0.08 cm(-1), D = 4.43 cm(-1)).

Synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of tetranuclear cubane-like and chain-like iron(II) complexes based on the N(4)O pentadentate dinucleating ligand 1,5-bis[(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]pentan-3-ol.

The tetranuclear complexes [Fe(4)(pypentO)(pym)(3)(Oac)(NCS)(3)] x 1.5EtOH (1), [Fe(4)(pypentO)(pym)(Oac)(2)(NCS)(2)(MeO)(2)(H(2)O)] x H(2)O (2), [Fe(2)(pypentO)(NCO)(3)](2) (3), and [Fe(2)(pypentO)(N(3))(3)](2) (4) have been prepared, and their structure and magnetic properties have been studied (pypentOH = 1,5-bis[(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]pentan-3-ol, pymH = 2-pyridylmethanol). The X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 (C(43)H(53)N(10)O(7.5)S(3)Fe(4), monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 11.6153(17) A, b = 34.391(17) A, c = 14.2150(18) A, beta = 110.88(5) degrees, V = 5305(3) A(3), Z = 4) and 2 (C(31)H(45)N(7)O(10)S(2)Fe(4), monoclinic, C2/c, a = 19.9165(17) A, b = 21.1001(12) A, c = 21.2617(19) A, beta = 104.441(10) degrees, V = 8652.7(12) A(3), Z = 8) showed a Fe(4)O(4) cubane-like arrangement of four iron(II) atoms, four mu(3)-O bridging ligands, one (1) or two (2) syn-syn bridging acetates. The X-ray diffraction analysis of 3 (C(40)H(46)N(14)O(8)Fe(4), monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 11.7633(18) A, b = 18.234(3) A, c = 10.4792(16) A, beta = 99.359(18) degrees, V = 2217.7(6) A(3), Z = 2) and 4 (C(34)H(46)N(26)O(2)Fe(4), monoclinic, P2(1)/c, V = 4412.4(10) A(3), a = 23.534(3) A, b = 18.046(2) A, c = 10.4865(16) A, beta = 97.80(2) degrees, Z = 4) showed a zigzag bis-dinuclear arrangement of four iron(II) cations, two mu(2)-O bridging pypentO ligands, four mu(2)-N-cyanato bridging ligands (3) or four end-on azido bridging ligands (4): they are the first examples of cyanato and azido bridged discrete polynuclear ferrous compounds, respectively. The Mössbauer spectra of 1 are consistent with four different high-spin iron(II) sites in the Fe(4)O(4) cubane-type structure. The Mössbauer spectra of 3 are consistent with two high-spin iron(II) sites (N(5)O and N(4)O). Below 190 K, the Mössbauer spectra of 4 are consistent with one N(5)O and two N(4)O high-spin iron(II) sites. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility was fitted with J(1) approximately 0 cm(-1), J(2) = -1.3 cm(-1), J(3) = 4.6 cm(-1), D = 6.4 cm(-1), and g = 2.21 for 1; J(1) = 2.6 cm(-1), J(2) = 2.5 cm(-1), J(3) = - 5.6 cm(-1), D = 4.5 cm(-1), and g = 2.09 for 2; J(1) = 1.5 cm(-1), J(2) = 0.2 cm(-1), D = - 5.6 cm(-1), D' = 4.5 cm(-1), and g = 2.14 for 3; and J(1) = - 2.6 cm(-1), J(2) = 0.8 cm(-1), D= 6.3 cm(-1), D' = 1.6 cm(-1), and g = 2.18 for 4. The differences in sign among the J(1), J(2), and J(3) super-exchange interactions indicate that the faces including only mu(3)-OR bridges exhibit ferromagnetic interactions. The nature of the ground state in 1-3 is confirmed by simulation of the magnetization curves at 2 and 5 K. In the bis-dinuclear iron(II) compounds 3 and 4, the J(2) interaction resulting from the bridging of two Fe(2)(pypentO)X(3) units through two pseudo-halide anions is ferromagnetic in 3 (X = mu(2)-N-cyanato) and may be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic in 4 (X = end-on azido). The J(1) interaction through the central O(alkoxo) and pseudo-halide bridges inside the dinuclear units is ferromagnetic in 3 (X = mu(2)-N-cyanato) and antiferromagnetic in 4 (X = end-on azido). In agreement with the symmetry of the two Fe(II) sites in complexes 3 and 4, D (pentacoordinated sites) is larger than D' (octahedral sites).

Deprotonation-Induced Enantioselective Aggregation and Deprotonation-Induced Ligand Rearrangement of Copper(II) Complexes Yield 1D Homochiral and Heterochiral Chains and a Cyclic Tetramer, Respectively.

The copper(II) complexes of protonated pentadentate Schiff-base ligands with [Cu(H(2)L(n))](ClO(4))(2) formula (n = 3-6, 3-6) have been synthesized and characterized (H(2)L(3) = N-((2-methylimidazol-4-yl)methylene)-3-aminpropyl-N'-((2-methylimidazol-4-yl)methylene)-4'-aminobutylamine, H(2)L(4) = N-((2-phenylimidazol-4-yl)methylene)-3-aminpropyl-N'-((2-phenyl-imidazol-4-yl)methylene)-4'-aminobutylamine, H(2)L(5) = N,N'-bis((2-phenylimidazol-4-yl)methylene)-3,3'-diaminodipropylmethylamine, H(2)L(6) = N-((2-methylimidazol-4-yl)methylene)-2-aminoethyl-N'-((2-methylimidazol-4-yl)methylene)-3'-aminopropylamine. The mono-deprotonated complexes 3', 4', and 5' contain one imidazole and one imidazolate groups per unit and are Delta (clockwise) or Lambda (anticlockwise) enantiomorphs due to the spiral arrangement of the ligand around copper(II) ion. They function as chiral building components for a self-assembly process resulting from the formation of hydrogen bonds between the imidazole and imidazolate groups of adjacent units to yield 1D zigzag-chain structures. The distance between hydrogen-bonded nitrogen atoms is 2.81(2), 2.832(9), and 2.875(9) Å for 3', 4', and 5', respectively. The crystal lattice of 3' yielded either.DeltaDeltaDelta. or.LambdaLambdaLambda. isotactic 1D zigzag-chains, while the crystal lattices of 4' and 5' yielded.DeltaLambdaDeltaLambda. syndiotactic 1D zigzag-chains. In 3', two adjacent methyl groups at the 2-position connected by hydrogen bond array in the same direction, thus allowing homochiral aggregation of the complex molecules in a 1D chain. On the other hand, in 4' and 5', two adjacent bulky phenyl groups require opposite orientations, thus allowing heterochiral aggregation. Enantioselective aggregation with homochirality or heterochirality can thus be controlled with suitable substituents. While its mononuclear precursor 6 is pentacoordinated with the N(5) donor set of the pentadentate ligand H(2)L(6), the deprotonated complex 6' has an imidazolate-bridged tetranuclear cyclic structure with a Cu-Cu distance of 6.086(2) Å. The ligand in 6' is tetradentate and includes an hexahydropyrimidine ring resulting from a deprotonation induced rearrangement reaction.

pH-Dependent Monomer <--> Oligomer Interconversion of Copper(II) Complexes with N-(2-R-imidazol-4-ylmethylidene)-2-aminoethylpyridine (R = Methyl, Phenyl).

The monomer <--> oligomer interconversion of the reported metal complexes is generated by proton abstraction/supply as a common external information input. The mononuclear copper(II) complexes 1 and 2 with [CuCl(2)(HL(n)())] chemical formula have been prepared (HL(1) = N-(2-methylimidazol-4-ylmethylidene)-2-aminoethylpyridine; HL(2) = N-(2-phenylimidazol-4-ylmethylidene)-2-aminoethylpyridine). The crystal structures were determined. 1.H(2)O, C(12)H(16)N(4)OCl(2)Cu: a = 13.773(2) Å, b = 8.245(2) Å, c = 13.861(2) Å, beta = 110.10(1) degrees, monoclinic, P2(1)/n, and Z = 4. 2, C(17)H(16)N(4)Cl(2)Cu: a = 7.6659(7) Å, b = 16.287(1) Å, c = 14.103(1) Å, beta = 95.058(7) degrees, monoclinic, P2(1)/c, and Z = 4. Complexes 1.H(2)O and 2 assume a pentacoordinated square pyramidal geometry with a N(3)Cl(2) donor set consisting of the nitrogen atoms of the protonated tridentate ligand and two chloride ions in the solid state, while in aqueous solution the Cu(II) ion is tetracoordinated (N(3)Ow donor set). When 1 and 2 are treated with an equimolar amount of sodium hydroxide or triethylamine, the deprotonation of the imidazole moiety promotes a self-assembly process, arising from coordination of the imidazolate nitrogen atom to a Cu(II) ion of an adjacent unit, to yield compounds 1'.4H(2)O as the perchlorate salt, and 2'a.6H(2)O as the perchlorate salt and( )()2'b as the hexafluorophosphate salt, respectively. 1'.4H(2)O, C(12)H(15)N(4)O(5)ClCu: a = b = 13.966(2) Å, c = 33.689(3) Å, tetragonal, I4(1)/a, and Z = 16. 2'a.6H(2)O, C(51)H(51)N(12)O(15)Cl(3)Cu(3): a = 15.177(3) Å, b = 15.747(3) Å, c = 14.128(3) Å, alpha = 100.06(2) degrees, beta = 110.37(2) degrees, gamma = 63.54(1) degrees, triclinic, P&onemacr;, and Z = 2. 2'b, C(17)H(15)N(9)F(6)PCu: a = b = 29.812(5) Å, c = 11.484(3) Å, trigonal, R&thremacr;, and Z = 18. The nuclearity of the self-assembled molecules and their detailed structure were confirmed to be cyclic imidazolate-bridged tetranuclear for 1'.4H(2)O and hexanuclear for 2'a.6H(2)O and 2'b, respectively, through single-crystal X-ray analyses and FAB-MS spectra. Variable-temperature experimental magnetic susceptibility data were well reproduced by using the Heisenberg model based on a cyclic tetranuclear structure for 1' and a cyclic hexanuclear structure for 2'a and 2'b. The reversible interconversion between the protonated monomeric and deprotonated oligomeric species were confirmed by pH-dependent potentiometric and electronic spectral titrations in aqueous solution, whereas the Pd(II) complex did not show a perfect disassembly process.

[Fe(II)(TRIM)(2)]F(2), the First Example of Spin Conversion Monitored by Molecular Vibrations.

The new [Fe(II)(TRIM)(2)]F(2) spin-crossover complex (TRIM = 4-(4-imidazolylmethyl)-2-(2-imidazolylmethyl)imidazole) has been synthesized, crystallizing in the monoclinic system, space group P2/n, with Z = 2, a = 9.798(2) Å, b = 8.433(2) Å, c = 14.597(3) Å, and beta = 90.46(1) degrees. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined to conventional agreement indices R = 0.032 and R(w) = 0.034 with 1378 unique reflections for which I > 3sigma(I). The molecular structure consists of [Fe(TRIM)(2)](2+) complex cations hydrogen-bonded to six fluoride anions. The crystal packing results from this highly symmetrical and dense 3D network of hydrogen bonds. The coordination geometry of the iron(II) center can be described as a weakly distorted octahedron, including six nitrogen atoms originating from the two TRIM ligands coordinated to Fe(II) through their imine nitrogen atoms. Investigation of [Fe(II)(TRIM)(2)]F(2) by magnetic susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy as a function of temperature indicates a 5% thermal variation of the spin fraction between 50 and 150 K, at variance with all previous litterature data. The spin conversion is gradual with 6% LS fraction below 50 K and less than 1% above 150 K. A theoretical approach based on the Ising-like model, completed with harmonic oscillators associated with the 15 vibration modes of the FeN(6) coordination octahedron, successfully fits the data with an energy gap of approximately 40 K between the lowest LS and HS electrovibrational states, an average vibration frequency omega(LS) of 232 K in the LS state, and an average omega(LS)/omega(HS) ratio of 1.3. Taking these results into account, the computed molar entropy change DeltaS associated with a complete conversion between the HS and LS states of Fe(II)(TRIM)(2)F(2) ( approximately 40 J.K(-)(1).mol(-)(1)) is in fair agreement with the expected value.
