Electron spin-spin exchange coupling mediated by the porphyrin pi system.

The syntheses and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectral characterizations of porphyrins (1-3) substituted with two radical groups bound to trans-meso positions are described. One of these compounds, 3, has been studied by variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and has been structurally characterized. Biradical porphyrin 3 is monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n, with a = 12.239(2) A, b = 17.819(3) A, c = 34.445(7) A, alpha = 90 degrees , beta = 97.466(3) degrees , gamma = 90 degrees , and Z = 2. The bis(nitroxide) porphyrins 1 and 2 exhibit fluid solution EPR spectra consistent with |J| >> |a|. No evidence was observed for conformational modulation of J by rotation about single bonds as shown by the lack of change of the EPR spectra as a function of temperature. The bis(semiquinone) porphyrin 3 exhibits frozen-solution EPR spectra with zero-field splitting and a Deltam(s) = 2 transition characteristic of a triplet state. The intensity of the Deltam(s) = 2 transition of 3 was measured as a function of temperature, and the data fit according to a singlet-triplet model to yield J(3,solution) = -75 cm(-1) (H = - 2Jŝ1.ŝ2). Polycrystalline samples of porphryin 3 were examined by variable-temperature magnetometry. The paramagnetic susceptibility data were fit using a modified Bleaney-Bowers equation to give J(3,solid) = -29 cm(-1) (H = - 2Jŝ(1).ŝ(2)). The antiferromagnetic J values are consistent with the pi topology of the porphyrin ring.

Testing bridge-mediated differences in dinuclear valence tautomeric behavior.

Two structurally characterized dinuclear valence tautomers are described. Cobalt ions are bridged by p- and m-phenylene units connected to 2,2'-bipyridines. X-ray crystal structures show that the molecules are in the [(Co(III))(Co(III))] forms at ca. 125 K, while spectroscopic studies show that both molecules can achieve the [(Co(II))(Co(II))] form above 400 K and confirm the [(Co(III))(Co(III))] form below 10 K. Magnetic susceptibility studies are also included. Our results highlight the necessity of studying both crystalline and amorphous samples to distinguish the effects of intrinsic electronic structure and intermolecular forces on valence tautomeric behavior.

Intramolecular Pd-catalyzed carboetherification and carboamination. Influence of catalyst structure on reaction mechanism and product stereochemistry.

The intramolecular Pd-catalyzed carboetherification of alkenes affords 2-indan-1-yltetrahydrofuran products in moderate to good yield with good to excellent levels of diastereoselectivity. The stereochemical outcome of these reactions is dependent on the structure of the Pd catalyst. Use of PCy(3) or P[(4-MeO)C(6)H(4)](3) as the ligand for Pd leads to syn-addition of the arene and the oxygen atom across the double bond, whereas use of (+/-)-BINAP or DPP-benzene affords products that result from anti-addition. The catalyst-induced change in stereochemistry is likely due to a change in reaction mechanism. Evidence is presented that suggests the syn-addition products derive from an unprecedented transannular alkene insertion of an 11-membered Pd(Ar)(OR) complex. In contrast, the anti-addition products appear to arise from Wacker-type anti-oxypalladation. Studies on analogous Pd-catalyzed intramolecular carboamination reactions, which afford 2-indan-1-ylpyrrolidines that result from syn-addition, are also described.

Enantioselective TADMAP-catalyzed carboxyl migration reactions for the synthesis of stereogenic quaternary carbon.

The chiral, nucleophilic catalyst TADMAP [1, 3-(2,2,2-triphenyl-1-acetoxyethyl)-4-(dimethylamino)pyridine] has been prepared from 3-lithio-4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (5) and triphenylacetaldehyde (3), followed by acylation and resolution. TADMAP catalyzes the carboxyl migration of oxazolyl, furanyl, and benzofuranyl enol carbonates with good to excellent levels of enantioselection. The oxazole reactions are especially efficient and are used to prepare chiral lactams (23) and lactones (30) containing a quaternary asymmetric carbon. TADMAP-catalyzed carboxyl migrations in the indole series are relatively slow and proceed with inconsistent enantioselectivity. Modeling studies (B3LYP/6-31G*) have been used in qualitative correlations of catalyst conformation, reactivity, and enantioselectivity.

Two generalizable routes to terminal carbido complexes.

Desulfurization of the thiocarbonyl ligand in square pyramidal [Ru(CS)Cl2(PCy3)2] (1-S) via sulfur atom abstraction using [Mo(H)(eta2-Me2CNAr)(N[i-Pr]Ar)2] forms [Ru(C)Cl2(PCy3)2] (1) cleanly over several hours in benzene; isolated yield is 55%. Complex 1 is also formed in 87% isolated yield upon reaction of [Ru(CHR)(PCy3)2Cl2] (R = p-C6H4Me, 2; Ph, 3) with vinyl acetate in dichloromethane. Complex 1-S is re-formed quantitatively from 1 upon treatment with elemental sulfur in CH2Cl2, but is prepared most conveniently by treatment of crude [Ru(CS)Cl2(PPh3)2(OH2)] with excess PCy3 in toluene. Nearly quantitative conversion of 1 to [Ru(CO)Cl2(PCy3)2] (1-O) occurs upon addition of dimethyldioxirane solution in acetone to 1 dissolved in CH2Cl2 at ca. -90 degrees C.

Metallacryptate single-molecule magnets: effect of lower molecular symmetry on blocking temperature.

The structural characterization of complexes [Mn(II)4Mn(III)22(pdol)12(OCH3)12(O)16(N3)6] (1) and [Mn(II)4Mn(III)22(pdol)12(OCH3)12(O)16(OH)2(H3O)(OCH3)3].ClO4.5CH3OH (2), where pdol(2-) is di-2-pyridyl methanediol, reveals that each has a metallacryptand shell that encapsulates a manganese oxide core. Variable-temperature direct current magnetic susceptibility measurements on 2 indicate a paramagnetic ground state that results from an overall antiferromagnetic interaction in the cluster, with chiT values decreasing from 300 K (51.2 cm3 K mol(-1)) to 2 K (19.8 cm3 K mol(-1)). Variable-temperature alternating current magnetic susceptibility measurements imply that both 1 and 2 behave as single-molecule magnets. Fitting the frequency-dependent out-of-phase magnetic susceptibility to the Arrhenius equation yields an effective energy barrier, Ueff, to magnetization relaxation of 16.5 +/- 0.7 K (11.5 +/- 0.5 cm(-1)) for 1 and 36.2 +/- 2.0 K (25.1 +/- 1.4 cm(-1)) for 2. The larger value for 2 is in agreement with the lower molecular symmetry, larger magnetoanisotropy, and higher ground spin state of 2 compared to those of 1. This observation suggests a new strategy for increasing the blocking temperatures in high-nuclearity manganese clusters.

Unusually stable palladium(IV) complexes: detailed mechanistic investigation of C-O bond-forming reductive elimination.

This communication describes the synthesis of a family of unusually stable palladium(IV) complexes containing two chelating 2-phenylpyridine ligands and two benzoates. These complexes undergo clean C-O bond-forming reductive elimination upon heating, and the mechanism of this catalytically relevant process has been studied in detail. Solvent effects, crossover experiments, Eyring plots (which show DeltaS of -1.4 +/- 1.9 and 4.2 +/- 1.4 in CDCl3 and DMSO, respectively), and Hammett analysis (which shows rho = -1.36 +/- 0.04 upon substitution of the para-benzoate substituent) all suggest that reductive elimination does not proceed via initial dissociation of a benzoate ligand. Instead, an unusual mechanism involving pre-equilibrium dissociation of the N-arm of the phenylpyridine ligand is proposed.

Corroborative models of the cobalt(II) inhibited Fe/Mn superoxide dismutases.

Attempting to model superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes, we designed two new N3O-donor ligands to provide the same set of donor atoms observed in the active site of these enzymes: K(i)Pr2TCMA (potassium 1,4-diisopropyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane-N-acetate) and KBPZG (potassium N,N-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl) glycinate). Five new Co(II) complexes (1-5) were obtained and characterized by X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, electrochemistry, magnetochemistry, UV-vis, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. The crystal structures of 1 and 3-5 revealed five-coordinate complexes, whereas complex 2 is six-coordinate. The EPR data of complexes 3 and 4 agree with those of the Co(II)-substituted SOD, which strongly support the proposition that the active site of the enzyme structurally resembles these models. The redox behavior of complexes 1-5 clearly demonstrates the stabilization of the Co(II) state in the ligand field provided by these ligands. The irreversibility displayed by all of the complexes is probably related to an electron-transfer process followed by a rearrangement of the geometry around the metal center for complexes 1 and 3-5 that probably changes from a trigonal bipyramidal (high spin, d7) to octahedral (low spin, d6) as Co(II) is oxidized to Co(III), which is also expected to be accompanied by a spin-state conversion. As the redox potentials to convert the Co(II) to Co(III) are high, it can be inferred that the redox potential of the Co(II)-substituted SOD may be outside the range required to convert the superoxide radical (O2*-) to hydrogen peroxide, and this is sufficient to explain the inactivity of the enzyme. Finally, the complexes reported here are the first corroborative structural models of the Co(II)-substituted SOD.

Multinuclear Fe(III) complexes with polydentate ligands of the family of dicarboxyimidazoles: nuclearity- and topology-controlled syntheses and Magneto-structural correlations.

Two polydentate ligands of the family of dicarboxyimidazoles, H(2)MeDCBI (= 4,5-dicarboxy-1-methyl-1H-imidazole) and H(3)DCBI (= 4,5-dicarboxyimidazole), have been used in reactions with the [Fe(3,5-(t)()Bu(2)salpn)](+) species {3,5-(t)Bu(2)salpn = the dianion of 1,3-bis-[(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)amino]propane} to synthesize selectively complexes of different nuclearities. Four complexes have been synthesized: the mononuclear complex [Fe(3,5-(t)Bu(2)salpn)(HMeDCBI)] (1), the two binuclear but topologically different complexes [Fe(3,5-(t)Bu(2)salpn)(MeDCBI)Fe(3,5-(t)Bu(2)salpn)] (2) and {[Fe(3,5-(t)Bu(2)salpn)](2)(HDCBI)} (3), and the trinuclear complex {[Fe(3,5-(t)Bu(2)salpn)](2)(DCBI)Fe(3,5-(t)Bu(2)salpn)} (4). The structures of these complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Variable-temperature direct-current magnetic susceptibility measurements were conducted for all compounds to obtain information about their electronic structure and to investigate the extent of magnetic communication among the Fe(III) centers. The results of these measurements allowed us to correlate the different structural motifs with the possible magnetic interactions that arise in multinuclear complexes of dicarboxyimidazoles. For 1, the room-temperature chi(M)T value reveals an S = (5)/(2) ground state. The data for the binuclear but topologically different complexes 2 and 3, and the trinuclear complex 4 suggest that weak intramolecular antiferromagnetic interactions are present, with interaction parameters ranging from -3.6 to -5.1 cm(-1). Differences in the extent of the magnetic communication between the metal centers through the two different interaction pathways of the ligands MeDCBI and DCBI (either through the imidazole ring or through the carboxylate groups) have been observed in complexes 2-4 that can be explained by the structural differences observed in the crystal structures of these compounds (the separation of the metal centers and the coplanarity of the metal ion orbitals with the pi system of the ligands). Cyclic voltammetry measurements for the mononuclear compound 1 show an irreversible reduction wave that is attributed to Fe(3+) + e(-) --> Fe(2+). The electrochemical behavior of the multinuclear complexes 2-4 is more complicated; however, it indicates that there is a degree of electronic communication between the Fe(III) centers.

Synthesis of a digermane-containing tricylic nonadecadienedione incorporating an equivalent of ring-opened THF.

The combination of 2 equiv of bis[bis(trimethylsilyl)amide]germylene (5) with 2 equiv of 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione (PTAD) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) results in the ring-opening of 1 equiv of THF to form 2,2,8,8-tetrakis(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyl-disilazan-2-yl)-5,16-diphenyl-7,9,14-trioxa-1,3,5,16,18,19-hexaaza-2,8-digerma-tricyclo[13.2.1.13,6]nonadeca-6(19),15(18)-diene-4,17-dione (6). This fast and nearly quantitative reaction builds a 15-membered ring from five different molecules. The new ring, structurally assigned by X-ray crystallography, contains a flexible methylene chain that moves rapidly on the NMR time scale.

4-cyanoimidazolate: a new pseudo-cyanide?

Because of its exobidentate nature, pK(a), and electronic properties, 4-cyanoimidazole has been examined as a ligand and as a pseudo-cyanide. The ligand reacts readily as an anion with both cobalt and nickel ions in solution to form coordination polymers. The magnetic susceptibility and thermal stability of these materials are reported. 4-Cyanoimidazolate forms a hexakis complex with nickel, to form the first observed hexakis imidazolate nickelate complex.

Solid-state packing of conjugated oligomers: from pi-stacks to the herringbone structure.

The solid-state structures of a series of bithiazole and thiophene oligomers, as well as a series of substituted pentacenes, are rationalized in terms of "pitch and roll" inclinations from an "ideal" cofacial pi-stack. Pitch inclinations translate adjacent molecules relative to one another in the direction of the long molecular axis, whereas roll inclinations translate the molecules along the short molecular axis. Thus, moderately large pitch distortions preserve pi-pi interactions between adjacent molecules, whereas roll translations greater than 2.5 A essentially destroy pi-pi overlap between adjacent molecules. The familiar herringbone packing is characterized by large roll distortions. It is shown that thiophenes tend to exhibit large roll translations, whereas thiazoles have small roll but large pitch translations. Substituted pentacenes tend to have both moderate pitch and roll distances. The relationship of molecular packing to transport properties is discussed.

Insertion of SO2 into a sulfide-bridged M-Ge bond: synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of the O-germyl-S-sulfoxylate.

Addition of SO(2) to [formula: see text](1) results in the insertion of SO(2) into the Pd-Ge bond to give the O-germyl-S-sulfoxylate insertion isomer (Et3P)2Pd(mu-S)S(O)OGe[N(SiMe3)2]2 (2). Heating solutions of 2 results in the formation of (Et3P)Pd(SGe[N(SiMe3)2]2OSOGe[N(SiMe3)2]2S) (3) and a LnPd(0) fragment. X-ray crystal structures of 2 and 3 are reported.

Cycloadditions of 2-azaallyllithium species with conjugated polyenes.

2-Azaallyllithium species [R(1)CH(-)N=C(X)R(2)Li(+), where R(1) and R(2) are alkyl and X = OMe] were generated by tin-lithium exchange of (2-azaallyl)stannanes and underwent [pi4s+pi2s] and [pi6s+pi4s] cycloadditions with cyclic dienes and trienes, respectively, to generate novel bridged azabicyclic compounds in a highly diastereoselective endo fashion. The periselectivity using cycloheptatriene was modest, producing a 1:1 mixture of [pi6s+pi4s] and [pi4s+pi2s] adducts. The reactions of 2-azaallyllithium species with dienes proceeded by a [pi4s+pi2s] pathway. The cycloadducts derived from cyclic 2-azaallyllithium species possess the 7-azabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane (tropane) or 8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane ring system and have been elaborated into cocaine-like analogues.

Mechanisms of exchange modulation in trimethylenemethane-type biradicals: the roles of conformation and spin density.

The molecular structures and magnetic properties of six dinitroxide biradicals are described. Five of the dinitroxides are trimethylenemethane-type (TMM-type) biradicals; that is, the intramolecular exchange parameter, J, is modulated by a carbon-carbon double bond. However, the efficacy of the carbon-carbon double bond as an exchange coupler is determined by the molecular conformation. Our results show that the exchange parameters correlate with phenyl-ring torsion angles (phi) via a simple Karplus-Conroy-type relation: J = 44 cos(2) phi - 17. Comparison of these results to those obtained for our isostructural series of bis(semiquinone) biradicals shows that both the magnitude of J and the resistance of ferromagnetic J to bond torsions is proportional to the spin density adjacent to the exchange coupler.
