Observation of the developing optical continuum along a nonlinear waveguide.

We describe what is to our knowledge the first nondestructive measurement of the evolution of an optical continuum as a function of distance along a nonlinear waveguide. Spectral mapping is achieved on a subwavelength scale by utilizing near-field microscopy to probe the waveguide's evanescent field. The measured continuum broadening along the waveguide agrees in general form with predictions of broadening from theoretical calculations, but differs in some important details. Subwavelength resolution measurements are made both along and across the waveguide to reveal spectral variations not seen before by other techniques.

Soft-x-ray wavelength shift induced by ionization effects in a capillary.

Coherent soft x rays are produced by high-harmonic generation in a capillary filled with Ar gas. We demonstrate that the tuning of the harmonic wavelengths with intensity and chirp arises from changes in the Ar ionization level. Control over the tuning can be achieved either by changing the average intensity of the laser pulse or by varying the quadratic spectral phase of the laser pulse. We observe an ionization-dependent blueshift of the fundamental wavelength that is directly imprinted on the harmonic wavelengths. The harmonic tuning is shown to depend on nonlinear spectral shifts of the fundamental laser pulse that are due to the plasma created by ionization, rather than directly on any chirp imposed on the fundamental wavelength.

Sculpted substrates for SERS.

Sculpted SERS-active substrates are prepared by assembling a closed packed monolayer of uniform polystyrene colloidal particles (diameter 350 to 800 nm) onto an evaporated gold surface and then electrodepositing gold through this template to produce films with controlled thicknesses, measured as fractions of the sphere diameter, d. The resulting surfaces consist of a regular hexagonal array of interconnected spherical cross-section dishes. The role of localised plasmons in determining the SERS enhancement factor obtained for benzene thiol adsorbed onto the surfaces is then investigated by correlation of the UV-visible reflectance spectra, 400 to 900 nm, measured at the same positions on the substrate surfaces, with the SERS spectra. The results are interpreted in terms of the relative contributions of plasmons that are free to propagate across the top surface and those trapped within the dishes of the sculpted surface.

Angle-resolved surface-enhanced Raman scattering on metallic nanostructured plasmonic crystals.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering is an ideal tool for identifying molecules from the "fingerprint" of their molecular bonds; unfortunately, this process lacks a full microscopic understanding and, practically, is plagued with irreproducibility. Using nanostructured metal surfaces, we demonstrate strong correlations between plasmon resonances and Raman enhancements. Evidence for simultaneous ingoing and outgoing resonances in wavelength and angle sheds new light on the Raman enhancement process, allowing optimization of a new generation of reproducible Raman substrates.

Tunable resonant optical microcavities by self-assembled templating.

Micrometer-scale optical cavities are produced by a combination of template sphere self-assembly and electrochemical growth. Transmission measurements of the tunable microcavities show sharp resonant modes with Q factors of >300 and 25-fold local enhancement of light intensity. The presence of transverse optical modes confirms the lateral confinement of photons. Calculations show that submicrometer mode volumes are feasible. The small mode volumes of these microcavities promise to lead to a wide range of applications. in microlasers, atom optics, quantum information, biophotonics, and single-molecule detection.
