Molecular and electronic structure of chromium(V) nitrido complexes with azide and isothiocyanate ligands.

The first use of [Cr(N)Cl4]2- as a starting material in chromium(v) nitrido chemistry is demonstrated in simple, high yield, metathesis reactions with the pseudohalogens SCN- and N3- yielding five-coordinate, labile complexes: [Cr(N)(NCS)4]2- and [Cr(N)(N3)4]2-, which have been crystallized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Reaction of [Cr(N)(NCS)4]2- with 1,10-phenanthroline furnishes six-coordinate [Cr(N)(NCS)3(phen)]- wherein phenanthroline coordinates to the position trans to the nitrido ligand. The trans influence of the nitrido ligand leads to a bond length difference of 0.223 A between the axial and equatorial ligators from the phenanthroline ligand. The absorption band with lowest energy in these pseudo-linear complexes is assigned as the electric dipole forbidden transition d(xy) --> d(x-y) based on intensities and its variation with the nature of the equatorial ligators. This absorption provides the spectrochemical series for the equatorial ligands, which is found to be numerically almost identical to that determined for chromium(III). DFT calculations reproduce the observed structures and corroborate the ligand field picture of the electronic structure of these complexes.

Two square-pyramidal chromium(V)-nitride complexes: bis(2-methylquinolin-8-olato)nitridochromium(V) and nitridobis(2-sulfidopyridine N-oxide)chromium(V).

Two new chromium(V)-nitride complexes with a coordination sphere completed by bidentate ligands have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Bis(2-methylquinolin-8-olato)nitridochromium(V), [Cr(C10H8NO)2(N)], has the coordination sphere completed by an equatorial N2O2 set of ligators. The compound crystallizes with the five-coordinate complexes at sites with twofold rotational symmetry and all Cr-N bond directions aligned with the crystallographic b axis. Nitridobis(2-sulfidopyridine N-oxide)chromium(V), [Cr(C5H4NOS)2(N)], crystallizes with the molecules on general positions and has an equatorial S2O2 coordination environment, which is unprecedented among nitride complexes of the first-row transition metals. In both systems, Cr[triple-bond]N bonds are short at ca 1.56 A.

Mimicking the two-dimensional spectrochemical series using density functional computations.

With tetragonal distortions of tetrahedral d2 complexes as examples, nonadditive and additive ligand fields are compared computationally, using Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) and ligand-field theory to obtain 45 linear, parametrical equations. For each complex, a "data" reduction from three nonadditive-field parameters to two parameters of the additive field occurs. The complexes V and CrX4- (where X=F, Cl, Br, I) provide the two-dimensional spectrochemical series of the sigma and pi AOM parameters, which are known semiempirically for the halide ligands. The same parametrical results can be obtained from the Kohn-Sham orbital energies of the "average of configuration" computation.

Atom transfer as a preparative tool in coordination chemistry. Synthesis and characterization of Cr(V) nitrido complexes of bidentate ligands.

The transfer of a terminal nitrido ligand from Mn(V)(N)(salen) to Cr(III) complexes is explored as a new preparative route to Cr(V) nitrido complexes. Reaction of Mn(V)(N)(salen) with labile CrCl(3)(THF)(3) in acetonitrile solution precipitates [Mn(Cl)(salen)].(CH(3)CN) and yields a solution containing a mixture of Cr(V) nitrido species with only labile auxiliary ligands. From this solution Cr(V) nitrido complexes with bidentate monoanionic ligands can be obtained in high yields. Five coordinate complexes of 8-hydroxoquinolinate (quin), 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dionate (dbm), and pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate (pyr-dtc) have been structurally characterized: Cr(N)(quin)(2) (1) crystallizes as compact orange prisms in the triclinic space group P with cell parameters a = 7.2450(6) A, b = 8.1710(4) A, c = 13.1610(12) A, alpha = 80.519(6) degrees, beta = 75.721(7) degrees, gamma = 75.131(5) degrees, V = 725.47(10) A(3), Z = 2. Cr(N)(dbm)(2) (2) crystallizes as green rhombs in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with cell parameters a = 14.6940(6) A, b = 16.4570(18) A, c = 19.890(3) A, V = 4809.8(8) A(3), Z = 8. Cr(N)(pyr-dtc)(2) (3) crystallizes as orange prisms in the monoclinic space group P21/c with cell parameters a = 14.8592(14) A, b = 8.5575(5) A, c = 11.8267(12) A, beta = 106.528(7) degrees, V = 1441.7(2) A(3), Z = 4. Complexes 2 and 3 represent new coordination environments for first row transition metal nitrido complexes. The d-orbital energy splitting in these systems with relatively weak equatorial donors differs significantly from the pattern in vanadyl and the previously known first row transition metal nitrido complexes. The d(x)2(-)(y)2 orbital in 2 and 3 is lower in energy and well resolved from the M-N pi orbitals [d(zx),d(yz)].

[Cr(N)Cl4]2-: a simple nitrido complex synthesized by nitrogen-atom transfer.

A new general route to nitrido complexes of Cr(V) based on nitrogen-atom transfer from Mn(N)(salen) to labile CrCl3(THF)3 is presented. By this approach, the simplest nitrido complex of a first row transition metal, [Cr(N)Cl4]2-, has been synthesized and isolated. [[N(CH3)4]2[Cr(N)Cl4].H2O crystallizes in the cubic space group Fm-3m with disordered anions. Cr-N is 1.555(19) A, Cr-Cl is 2.2912(16) A, and N-Cr-Cl is 101.24(4) degrees . The orbital splitting scheme of [Cr(N)Cl4]2- is extreme with the dx2-y2 orbital 10 000 cm-1 lower in energy than the degenerate {dzx, dyz} set of orbitals destabilized by pi-bonding with the nitrido ligand. Hydrolysis of [Cr(N)Cl4]2 preserves the {CrN}2+ moiety.

The trans influence in mer-trichloronitridobis(triphenylarsine)ruthenium(VI).

The title compound, mer-[RuCl(3)N(C(18)H(15)As)(2)], is the first structurally characterized example of a nitride complex in which ruthenium is six-coordinated to monodentate ligands only. The Ru[triple-bond]N bond length [1.6161 (15) A] is relatively long, and the trans influence of the nitride ligand is reflected by the difference between the Ru--Cl(trans) and Ru--Cl(cis) bond lengths [0.1234 (4) A]. The N--Ru--Cl(trans) axis is sited on a twofold axis.

Isolation and molecular structure of hexacyanoruthenate(III).

The [Ru(CN)(6)](3-) ion is synthesized in aqueous solution and isolated as [Ph(4)As](3)[Ru(CN)(6)].2H(2)O (1). Compound 1 crystallizes as orange needles in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with cell parameters a = 11.346(2) A, b = 23.107(5) A, c = 25.015(5) A, beta = 99.55(3) degrees, V = 6467.1(22) A(3), Z = 4. The octahedral anion has Ru-C bond lengths in the range 2.023(6)-2.066(6) A. DFT calculations reproduce experimental geometries for [M(CN)(6)](3-) (M = Fe, Ru) equally well and yield significantly higher spin densities on the cyanide ligands in [M(CN)(6)](3-) (M = Ru, Os) than in [Fe(CN)(6)](3-).

An average-of-configuration method for using Kohn-Sham density functional theory in modeling ligand-field theory.

The Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF) package has been used to constrain Kohn-Sham DFT in such a fashion that a transition from KS-DFT to ligand-field theory in the form of the parametrical d(q)() model is completely well-defined. A relationship is established between the strong-field approximation of the parametrical d(2) model for the tetrahedral complexes VCl(4)(-) and VBr(4)(-) and certain fixed-orbital ADF-computed energies. In this way values for all the parameters of the d(2)() model may be computed, thus allowing the ADF results to be expressed in terms of a KS-DFT energy matrix that can be diagonalized. This means that the KS-DFT deficiency with regard to computation of nondiagonal elements has been overcome and the KS-DFT eigenenergies have become available through the KS-DFT mimicking of the ligand-field plus repulsion model. By using mutually orthogonal strong-field energy matrices, the mimicking has been further elucidated. The computed values for the empirical parameters of VCl(4)(-) and VBr(4)(-) are in good agreement with experimental data. The spectrochemical and the nephelauxetic series have been computed by including the remaining halide complexes and the quantitatively special position of F(-)() among the halides corroborated for both series.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Stable trans-Dioxo Tungsten(IV) Complex and Series of Mono-Oxo Molybdenum(IV) and Tungsten(IV) Complexes. Structural and Electronic Effects of pi-Bonding in trans-[M(O)(X)(dppe)(2)](+/0) Systems.

trans-[W(O)(F)(dppe)(2)](BF(4)) (dppe = Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2), 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) (10) has been synthesized. From this, the neutral trans-[W(O)(2)(dppe)(2)].2CH(3)OH (11) was prepared by a hydrolysis and deprotonation reaction with Et(4)NOH in methanol/water. Together with the analogous molybdenum compound (2) this compound afforded by substitution under acid conditions salts of trans-[M(O)(X)(dppe)(2)](+) ions (M = Mo, W; X = OH, OCH(3), Cl, Br, I, NCS) and trans-[Mo(O)(N(3))(dppe)(2)](CF(3)SO(3)) (9). All the compounds have low-spin d(2) electronic configuration. The compounds were characterized by (31)P{(1)H} NMR, positive FAB-ionization mass spectrometry, UV-vis spectroscopy, and vibrational spectroscopy. X-ray crystallographic studies were carried out on compounds 10, 11, trans-[W(O)(OH)(dppe)(2)](ClO(4)) (12), and trans-[W(O)(NCS)(dppe)(2)](BPh(4)) (16). The electronic spectra of the mono-oxo species are consistent with the lowest energy transitions being of d(xy)() --> {d(zx)(), d(yz)()} character. No ligand-field transitions are observed for the dioxo tungsten complex. Identical pi-spectrochemical series were found for the two metals. The shielding of the phosphorus nuclei determined by (31)P{(1)H} NMR is significantly influenced by the nature of the axial ligands.

Ruthenium Complexes Containing "Noninnocent" o-Benzoquinone Diimine/o-Phenylenediamide(2-) Ligands. Synthesis and Crystal Structure of the Nitrido-Bridged Complex [{LRu(o-C(6)H(4)(NH)(2))}(2)(&mgr;-N)](PF(6))(2).3CH(3)CN.C(6)H(5)CH(3).

Reaction of LRu(III)Cl(3) (L = 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) with 1,2-phenylenediamine (opdaH(2)) in H(2)O in the presence of air affords [LRu(II)(bqdi)(OH(2))](PF(6)) (1), where (bqdi) represents the neutral ligand o-benzoquinone diimine. From an alkaline methanol/water mixture of 1 was obtained the dinuclear species [{LRu(II)(bqdi)}(2)(&mgr;-H(3)O(2))](PF(6))(3) (1a). The coordinated water molecule in 1 is labile and can be readily substituted under appropriate reaction conditions by acetonitrile, yielding [LRu(II)(bqdi)(CH(3)CN)](PF(6))(2) (2), and by iodide and azide anions, affording [LRu(II)(bqdi)I](PF(6)).0.5H(2)O (3) and [LRu(bqdi)(N(3))](PF(6)).H(2)O (4), respectively. Heating of solid 4 in vacuum at 160 degrees C generates N(2) and the dinuclear, nitrido-bridged complex [{LRu(o-C(6)H(4)(NH)(2))}(2)(&mgr;-N)](PF(6))(2) (5). Complex 5 is a mixed-valent, paramagnetic species containing one unpaired electron per dinuclear unit whereas complexes 1-4 are diamagnetic. The crystal structures of 1, 1a.3CH(3)CN, 3, 4.H(2)O, and 5.3CH(3)CN.0.5(toluene) have been determined by X-ray crystallography: 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/m, Z = 2, with a = 8.412(2) Å, b = 15.562(3) Å, c = 10.025 Å, and beta = 109.89(2) degrees; 1a.3CH(3)CN, in the monoclinic space group C2/c, Z = 4, with a = 19.858(3) Å, b = 15.483(2) Å, c = 18.192(3) Å, and beta = 95.95(2) degrees; 3, in the orthorhombic space group Pnma, Z = 4, with a = 18.399(4) Å, b = 9.287(2) Å, and c = 12.052(2) Å, 4.H(2)O, in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, Z = 4, with a = 8.586(1) Å, b = 15.617(3) Å, c = 16.388(5) Å, and beta = 90.84(2) degrees; and 5.3CH(3)CN.0.5(toluene), in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, Z = 4, with a = 15.003(3) Å, b = 16.253(3) Å, c = 21.196(4) Å, and beta = 96.78(3) degrees. The structural data indicate that in complexes 1-4 the neutral o-benzoquinone diimine ligand prevails. In contrast, in 5 this ligand has predominantly o-phenylenediamide character, which would render 5 formally a mixed-valent Ru(IV)Ru(V) species. On the other hand, the Ru-N bond lengths of the Ru-N-Ru moiety at 1.805(5) and 1.767(5) Å are significantly longer than those in other crystallographically characterized Ru(IV)=N=Ru(IV) units (1.72-1.74 Å). It appears that the C(6)H(4)(NH)(2) ligand in 5 is noninnocent and that formal oxidation state assignments to the ligands or metal centers are not possible.
