Ion complexation: a route to enhanced block copolymer alignment with electric fields.

We investigate the enhanced alignment of lamellar microdomains under an electric field by addition of lithium chloride (LiCl) into polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) copolymers. A significant increase of dielectric contrast resulting from the formation of lithium-PMMA complexes markedly reduces the critical electric field strength required to overcome the preferential interactions of one block with the substrate, providing a route to achieve the complete alignment of microdomains in block copolymer thin films.

[Docetaxel combined with cisplatin in the treatment of anthracycline-resistant advanced breast cancer].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of combination chemotherapy of Docetaxel (Taxotere, TXT) combined with cisplatin (DDP) for anthracycline (ANT)-resistant advanced breast cancer (ABC). METHODS: From April 2000 to March 2005, 31 patients with ANT-resistant advanced breast cancer were treated with combination chemotherapy of TXT and DDP. TXT 75 mg/m2 and DDP 75 mg/m2 were used on day 1 every three weeks. The median number of cycles was 4 (range: 2 - 8 cycles). RESULTS: The overall combination chemotherapy response rate was 54.9% with a median time to progression of 5 months. One-year survival rate was 66.7%. The main side effects were gastrointestinal and hematologic toxicities, including grade 3 to 4 nausea and vomiting in 3 patients (9.7%), leukopenia in 6 (19.3%), and neutropenia in 3 (9.7%). CONCLUSION: Taxotere and displatin combination is active in the treatment for anthracycine-resistant advanced breast cancer patient with an acceptable toxicity, and may be a therapeutic alternative after anthracycline regimen has failed.

Synthesis, structure, and photoelectronic effects of a uranium-zinc-organic coordination polymer containing infinite metal oxide sheets.

The hydrothermal reaction of ZnUO2(OAc)4.7H2O with pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid gives rise to a novel uranium-zinc-organic coordination polymer containing infinite U-O-Zn double sheets and organic ligands. Thermal and photoelectrochemical analyses indicate that the coordination polymeric compound not only has a high thermal stability but also exhibits interesting photoelectronic properties.

Photoluminescent metal-organic polymer constructed from trimetallic clusters and mixed carboxylates.

The solvothermal reaction of zinc acetate dihydrate with a mixture of benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H(2)BDC) and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H(3)BTC) in a solution containing N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF), absolute ethanol, and chlorobenzene gave rise to a metal-organic polymer, Zn(3).BDC.2BTC.2NH(CH(3))(2).2NH(2)(CH(3))(2). The structure of this polymer possesses a unique three-dimensional framework with tri-zinc clusters, and BDC and BTC units colinking the clusters. Moreover, this metal-organic polymer exhibits strong photoluminescence at room temperature, and the main emission band is at about 430 nm (lambda(ex) = 325 nm). Crystal data for this compound (C(17)H(20)N(2)O(8)Zn(1.5)): monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n, cell dimensions a = 11.6171(3) A, b = 14.2456(4) A, c = 12.6426(3) A, beta = 107.030(2) degrees, V = 2000.51(9) A(3), and Z = 4.

Controlled fabrication of cross-linked nanoparticles/polymer composite thin films through the combined use of surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization and gas/solid reaction.

A promising strategy for the controlled synthesis of inorganic/polymeric nanocomposites may be sustained by fabricating cross-linked PbS nanoparticles/polymer composite thin films through combining surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and gas/solid reaction. The introduction of Pb ions through the extension of surface-initiated ATRP to the monomers containing metal ions provides an opportunity for generating nanoparticles on the substrate.
