Fabry-Perot etalons using colloidal photonic crystal mirrors.

Fabry-Perot etalons have been fabricated with 3D colloidal photonic crystal mirrors. The colloid films were optimized for high reflection and low loss to provide good finesse values in the 1200-1700 nm spectral range. A cavity quality factor of 2400 and a finesse of 8 together with sharp 0.5 nm wide resonance transmission peaks are reported that attest to the relatively good optical quality of the three-dimensionally structured films and the promise of self-assembly colloidal crystal chemistry in providing novel microporous optical interferometers for potential applications such as environmental and biological sensing.

Femtosecond laser direct writing of multiwavelength Bragg grating waveguides in glass.

Novel Bragg grating waveguide structures have been fabricated in bulk borosilicate glass through a type II photosensitivity mechanism driven by single femtosecond laser pulses. Low-loss single-mode waveguides and narrow-linewidth Bragg gratings were generated simultaneously by forming an array of refractive index voxels in a single laser scan. Laser pulse duration is shown to significantly affect the grating strength and waveguide loss. Bragg wavelengths, defined by the periodicity of laser-modified volumes, were fully controlled by the sample scan speed to provide resonances anywhere in the 1200-1620 nm telecommunication bands. Four linear Bragg filters with distinct resonant wavelengths are presented that define the first demonstration of laser writing of multiple-wavelength and cascaded Bragg grating waveguides in a single process step.

Scalable multichannel micromachining with pseudo-nondiffracting vacuum ultraviolet beam arrays generated by thin-film axicons.

Scalable multichannel microstructuring was demonstrated by multiplexing a focused molecular fluorine laser beam with cylindrical nanolayer microaxicons into an array of converging pseudo-nondiffracting subbeams. The axicons were fabricated by shadow-mask vapor deposition of magnesium fluoride onto substrates of identical material. Long-period surface gratings of variable pitch were generated on poly(methyl methacrylate) by varying the target position within the converging periodic focal lines.

157 nm F2-laser writing of silica optical waveguides in silicone rubber.

Silica (SiO2) optical waveguides have been fabricated on the surface of silicone [(SiO(CH3)2)n] rubber by photochemical modification of silicone rubber into silica with 157 nm F2-laser radiation. The 2 mm thick silicone was exposed through a thin (approximately 0.2 mm) air layer to generate oxygen radicals that chemically assisted in the silica transformation. Silica waveguides were defined in 8-16 microm wide exposure strips by a proximity Cr-on-CaF2 photomask. Optimum laser processing conditions are presented for generating crack-free waveguides with good optical transparency at red (635 nm) and infrared (1550 nm) wavelengths. A propagation loss of approximately 6 dB/cm is reported at the 1550 nm wavelength.

Microfabricated system for parallel single-cell capillary electrophoresis.

Performing single-cell electrophoresis separations using multiple parallel microchannels offers the possibility of both increasing throughput and eliminating cross-contamination between different separations. The instrumentation for such a system requires spatial and temporal control of both single-cell selection and lysis. To address these problems, a compact platform is presented for single-cell capillary electrophoresis in parallel microchannels that combines optical tweezers for cell selection and electromechanical lysis. Calcein-labeled acute myloid leukemia (AML) cells were selected from an on-chip reservoir and transported by optical tweezers to one of four parallel microfluidic channels. Each channel entrance was manufactured by F2-laser ablation to form a 20- to 10-microm tapered lysis reservoir, creating an injector geometry effective in confining the cellular contents during mechanical shearing of the cell at the 10-microm capillary entrance. The contents of individual cells were simultaneously injected into parallel channels resulting in electrophoretic separation as recorded by laser-induced fluorescence of the labeled cellular contents.
