Advances in the diagnosis and classification of B-ALL: comparative insights from updated guidelines.

Accurate molecular classification is essential for diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment selection in B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). In this study, we performed a comprehensive, real-world reclassification of 1015 consecutively diagnosed B-ALL patients using the fifth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Haematolymphoid Tumours (WHO-HAEM5) and the International Consensus Classification (ICC). An integrative genomic strategy that combined whole transcriptome sequencing, fusion detection, mutational analysis, and cytogenetics enabled reclassification according to both the WHO-HAEM5 and ICC frameworks, thereby substantially reducing the proportion of unclassifiable B-ALL from 41.9% (2016 WHO revision [WHO-HAEM4R]) to 15.9% (WHO-HAEM5) and 11.9% (ICC). Distinct clinical and prognostic features were identified across newly defined subtypes. Multivariable analysis confirmed that this genomic classification is a robust, independent predictor of survival after adjusting for age, minimal residual disease status, and transplant intervention. Specifically, HLF-rearranged and MEF2D-rearranged B-ALL conferred a persistently poor prognosis across all age groups despite allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, highlighting an urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies. Gene expression profiling resolved cryptic subtypes, including ETV6::RUNX1-like, ZNF384-rearranged-like, and BCR::ABL1-like B-ALL, and uncovered diagnostic ambiguity in patients with concurrent lesions. In addition, we report emerging high-risk groups, including IDH1/2- and ZEB2 Q1072-mutated B-ALL, that may warrant recognition as distinct molecular entities. Our findings demonstrate the clinical use of integrative transcriptomic profiling in refining B-ALL taxonomy in guiding risk-adapted therapies and informing future revisions of diagnostic standards. This study supports the incorporation of high-throughput molecular diagnostics into routine leukemia classification and precision treatment planning.

Aplf/Dna2 variants drive chromosomal fission and accelerate speciation in zokors.

Chromosomal fissions and fusions are common, yet the molecular mechanisms and implications in speciation remain poorly understood. Here, we confirm a fission event in one zokor species through multiple-omics and functional analyses. We traced this event to a mutation in a splicing enhancer of the DNA repair gene Aplf in the fission-bearing species, which caused exon skipping and produced a truncated protein that disrupted DNA repair. An intronic deletion in Dna2, known to facilitate neo-telomere formation when knocked out, reduced gene activity. These variants collectively drove chromosomal fission in this zokor species. The newly formed chromosome became fixed due to carrying essential genes and strong selective pressure. While geographic isolation likely initiated the divergence of this species and the sister one, the fission event and associated decline at the chromosome level in gene flow probably exacerbated the speciation process. Our work elucidates the genetic basis of chromosomal fission and underscores its role in speciation dynamics.

Preparation and characterization of magnetic microspheres for the purification of interferon alpha-2b.

Magnetic agarose microspheres (MAMS), magnetic cellulose microspheres (MCMS), and magnetic poly(vinyl alcohol) microspheres (MPVAMS) were prepared by various different preparation methods. MCMS coupled with anti-IFN alpha-2b monoclonal antibodies (mAb) were selected for the purification of interferon alpha-2b (IFN alpha-2b) after performance characterization among microspheres. Parameters of immunomagnetic separation (IMS), including binding mAb, elution behavior, and sample pretreatment conditions, were optimized to improve the purification efficiency of the separation of IFN alpha-2b by MCMS. Size-exclusion HPLC (HPSEC) showed that the IFN alpha-2b was purified from crude cell lysate had an overall purity of 92.9%, while immunological and biological assays showed an activity recovery of 88.5% and specific antiviral activity of 2.7 x 10(8) IU/mg. Identity and molecular mass of purified IFN alpha-2b were confirmed by western blot and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) analysis. This study illustrated the favorable separation media which combined desired properties for the development of magnetic separation of biological materials.

[A three years follow-up study on microkeratome associated deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty].

PURPOSE: To investigate the therapeutic effects and side effects of microkeratome associated deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty (MDLEK). METHOD: Six patients with bulbous keratopathy who underwent MDLEK were follow up for three years. RESULTS: The best corrected visual acuity improved obviously in 5 cases within 3 months post operation and kept stable afterward during the follow up time. One of them even arrived 14/20. Meanwhile the Astigmatism averaged (2.04 +/- 1.19)D 3 months post operation and from then on decreased gradually. Pachymetry appeared almost normal and showed stabilization. Post-operative endothelial cells density decreased in a model similar to that in penetrating keratoplasty. Keratocytes were found to be normal by confocal microscope and there was no scar in the visual axial area 12 months post operation. The deep sutures caused no neovascularization and rejection. CONCLUSION: MDLEK is a safe and applied surgical therapy for bulbous keratopathy with shorter visual recovery time, lower astigmatism and approving optical property of post-operative corneal.

Altered corneal nerves in aqueous tear deficiency viewed by in vivo confocal microscopy.

PURPOSE: To define the alterations of corneal nerves in aqueous tear deficiency dry eye patients with or without Sjögren syndrome and to identify the relationship between the morphologic changes of corneal nerves and the extent of dry eye. METHODS: Confocal microscopy was used to examine 38 consecutive aqueous tear deficiency patients (8 Sjögren syndrome and 30 non-Sjögren syndrome) and 30 age- and gender-matched normal controls. Images taken by Confocal2 slit-scanning microscope at subbasal epithelial cell layer of central cornea were analyzed. The number and density of corneal nerves and their size, beads, tortuosity, and branching pattern were compared. These data were correlated with age and the degree of dry eye. RESULTS: Sjögren syndrome patients showed a significant increase in average nerve number and tortuosity as compared with normal controls (P = 0.031 and 0.021, respectively). Severe nerve tortuosity (grade 4) and nerve branching appeared more frequently in aqueous tear deficiency than in normal subjects (P = 0.024 and 0.042, respectively). A decreased nerve number was observed with age in the normal controls (P = 0.002). However, such a correlation did not exist in aqueous tear deficiency. In aqueous tear deficiency, rose bengal staining score correlated positively with nerve density (P = 0.048) and nerve number (P = 0.001). Corneal fluorescein staining score was also positively correlated with nerve number (P = 0.027). CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal morphologic changes are observed in aqueous tear deficiency that are more severe in Sjögren syndrome. The distinct changes of corneal nerves include increased nerve number, tortuosity, and chances of branching, suggesting an attempted nerve regeneration. A strong correlation exists between the changes of nerve morphology and the degree of dry eye. These results provide some possible evidence for the abnormal corneal sensation in dry eye.

Plasminogen kringle 5 inhibits alkali-burn-induced corneal neovascularization.

PURPOSE: Plasminogen kringle 5 (K5) is a potent angiogenic inhibitor. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of K5 on alkali-burn-induced corneal neovascularization (NV) and to investigate its mechanism of action. METHODS: Corneal NV was induced in rabbits by NaOH. The rabbits received eye drops containing K5 or vehicle alone, four times per day. Corneal NV and inflammation were monitored every other day with a slit lamp microscope, and the length of the vessels in the cornea and the area of NV were measured. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was determined by immunohistochemical and Western blot analyses. The TUNEL assay was used to assess the apoptosis of endothelial cells. The effects of K5 on primary bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) were determined by MTT assay, flow cytometry, transmission electron microscopy, and DNA fragmentation assay. RESULTS: Alkali-burn-induced progressive corneal NV and inflammation in the cornea. K5 delayed the onset of corneal NV (P < 0.05) and decreased NV areas (P < 0.05) in a dose-dependent manner. K5 treatment, after the formation of corneal NV, induced regression of newly formatted vessels in the cornea. K5 decreased the inflammatory index in the corneas at different time points after the alkali burn. Corneal VEGF levels were reduced by K5 treatment. K5 inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis in BAECs. CONCLUSIONS: Topical application of K5 may have therapeutic potential for the chemical burn-induced corneal NV and inflammation. The inhibitory effect of K5 on corneal NV may be by downregulation of VEGF expression.

[Histopathologic and ultrastructure changes of corneal dystrophy of bowman layer, type I].

PURPOSE: To explore the histopathologic and ultrastructure changes of corneal dystrophies of bowman layer, type I (CDB I ) in Chinese. METHODS: Cornea buttons were obtained from 4 CDB I patients in 2 pedigrees who underwent lamella or penetrating keratoplasty. Sections with HE and special staining were observed under light microscope. Ultrathin sections were performed and ultrastructure changes were investigated under transmission electron microscope. Two normal cornea specimens were used as control. RESULTS: In the CDB I cornea epithelium, microvillus were decreased or lost. Small clumps of deposits with high electron density were found between basal cells. Some basal cells appeared apoptosis sign. A great quantity of rod-shape deposits were seen in Bowman's layer and the anterior part of stroma. CONCLUSIONS: CDB I patients have characteristic corneal structure changes, and may be one of the reasons of the clinical symptoms.

Microsurgical treatment of Mooren's corneal ulcer.

This study evaluated the effect of microsurgery of lamellar keratoplasty (LKP) on Mooren's corneal ulcer. The surgical effect, postoperative astigmatism, postoperative vision, postoperative ulcer recurrence, and surgical complications of 2 groups of consecutive Mooren's ulcer inpatients treated respectively by non-microsurgery of LKP and microsurgery of LKP were analyzed. There were significant differences of the effect, postoperative astigmatism, postoperative vision, postoperative ulcer recurrence, and surgical complications between the 2 groups. The effect and postoperative vision of the microsurgery-treated group were better than those of the non-microsurgery-treated group. The postoperative astigmatism, postoperative ulcer recurrence, and surgical complications of the microsurgery-treated group were less than those of the non-microsurgery-treated group. Microsurgery of LKP of Mooren's corneal ulcer can greatly improve the cure rate of the disease and postoperative vision, and reduce surgical complication and postoperative ulcer recurrence.

Fresh amniotic membrane transplantation combined lamellar keratoplasty for patients with recurrent Mooren's ulcer.

PURPOSE: To investigate the possibility of amniotic membrane as an immunological insulating band to reduce the recurrent frequency of Mooren's ulcer. METHODS: Twelve cases(12 eyes) with recurrent Mooren's Ulcer were observed. Among them, 4 cases (4 eyes) were male and 8 cases(8 eyes) female, ranging in age between 26 and 51 years [mean(41 +/- 3) years]. Three eyes recurred once, 5 eyes twice, and 4 eyes three before. Eleven of 12 cases (11/12 eyes) with frequently recurrent Mooren's ulcer underwent lamellar keratoplasty combined amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT). One patient who had entire corneal ulceration accepted AMT alone. RESULTS: Follow-up time is 12 to 29 months, [mean (23 +/- 6) months]. Before AMT, the recurrent frequency of Mooren's Ulcer of all cases after corneal surgery was 1-7 months [mean (3 +/- 2) months]. Nine of 12 eyes with lamellar keratoplasty combined AMT did not recur within the observation period; 2 eyes recurred 11 months after the surgery. Three months postoperatively, neovascularization was observed, which made it nearly impossible to decipher between amniotic membrane and its nearby conjunctiva, only at the junction of the transplant can some trails be observed. One case with entire AMT alone showed graft resolution and neovascularization in 1 month. CONCLUSION: AMT combined with lamellar keratoplasty and lesion excision may delay recurrence of Mooren's Ulcer, reduce its recurrent frequency. Besides the effects of decreasing inflammation, it may have immunological insulating function as well. This conclusion should be proven by further clinical comparative study of much more samples.

The effects of amniotic membrane on polymorphonuclear cells.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of fresh and preserved amniotic membrane on polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) so as to understand the anti-inflammatory mechanism of amniotic membrane transplantation. METHODS: Conditioned medium was collected 48 hours after fresh or preserved amnions were cultured in DMEM and 5% CO(2) at 37 degrees C. Then, polymorphonuclear cells were cultured in conditioned culture or DMEM. Fluorescent microscopy with 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining and cytometry were performed 6, 9, 12, and 15 hours later. RESULTS: Apoptotic neutrophils were found in each group at different time points. The percentage of apoptotic cells at 6, 9, 12, and 15 hours after culture in the fresh and preserved amnion groups and the control group was 17.3%, 24.4%, 29.8%, 37.1%, and 16.2%, 20.1%, 23.7%, 27.7%, and 10.2%, 13.7%, 21.1%, 26.4%, respectively (t test, P(1) < 0.01, P(2) < 0.01 and P(3) < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Amniotic membrane can accelerate apoptosis of polymorphonuclear neutrophils, reduce inflammation, and prevent ocular surface collagen from resolution, indicating that fresh amnion might have a stronger effect than preserved amnion.

[Confocal microscopy in transplanted human corneas].

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was in-real time observation and morphological evaluation of the transplanted human corneas, using confocal 2.0 microscopy. METHODS: Twelve eyes of 12 patients on 3-7 days after lamellar keratoplasty (LKP), 8 eyes of 8 patients at 1 year after LKP, and 10 eyes of 10 patients at 3-7 days after penetrating keratoplasty (PKP), 11 eyes of 11 patients at 1 year after PKP were examined by confocal 2.0 microscopy in vivo. Images were recorded by continuously focusing the optical section through the full thickness central cornea. RESULTS: 3-7 days after LKP, small stromal cells, cranny-like dark strias and nerves were seen in transplanted corneas. There were highly reflective regions and dots in the lamellar interface. One year after LKP, the nerves disappeared. There were less highly reflective regions, but the dots still can be seen. Some gross dark strias were seen in the posterior stroma and the density of the endothelium cells was normal. 3-7 days after PKP, keratocytes were activated. Nerves and gross dark strias could be seen in transplanted corneas. The density of the endothelium cells was normal, with some highly reflective dots deposited among them. One year after PKP, the nerves disappeared, and strias still existed. The density of the endothelium cells decreased significantly. CONCLUSIONS: Confocal scanning microscopy is a new tool for the study of cellular morphology and construction of transplanted human corneas. It can be used in the evaluation of operation effect, clinical observation and follow-up.

[Effect of FK506 eye-drop combined with keratoplasty on recurrent Mooren's ulcer].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of FK506 eye-drop combined with keratoplasty on recurrent Mooren's ulcer. METHODS: 9 cases (15 eyes) of recurrent Mooren's ulcer were treated with topical FK506 eye-drop combined with keratoplasty. Of the 15 eyes, two of Mooren's ulcer smaller than half circle of the limbus were treated with 0.1% FK506 eye-drop. Among the other 13 eyes of the ulcer larger than half the circle of the limbus, 12 eyes were treated with excision of conjunctiva combined with lamellar keratoplasty. One eye with a central corneal perforation was treated with penetrating keratoplasty. FK506 eye-drop 0.1% was given to the 13 operated eyes after the re-epithelialization of the cornea. The effect of FK506 on recurrent Mooren's ulcer was observed. Measurements of FK506 in surgically resected cornea and conjunctiva, and aqueous humor of the operated eyes were performed using enzyme immunoassay procedure. Twelve cases of recurrent Mooren's ulcer treated with lamellar keratoplasty combined with topical 0.1% dexamethasone eye-drop were taken as control. RESULTS: After application of 0.1% FK506 eye-drop, concentrations of 30 - 350 ng/g of FK506 were found in the cornea and conjunctiva, and no FK506 was measured in the aqueous humor. Nine cases (15 eyes) of recurrent Mooren's ulcer were all cured and no recurrence was observed during the follow-up time of 12 - 17 months. The vision of 5 eyes was improved more than 2 lines after the treatment. Seven eyes of Mooren's ulcer in the control group recurred. CONCLUSION: 0.1% FK506 eye-drop combined with keratoplasty is an effective treatment for recurrent Mooren's ulcer.

[The contralateral eye in patients with unilateral iridocorneal endothelial syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical characteristics of the contralateral eyes in patients with unilateral iridocorneal endothelial syndrome (ICE). METHODS: The clinical characteristics were analyzed retrospectively on the contralateral eyes in 42 cases of unilateral ICE. Among them, 19 patients (19 eyes) received examinations of refraction, intraocular pressure (IOP), slit lamp, gonioscopy and ultrasound biomicroscopy. In the 35 cases (35 eyes), the endothelial cell counts of the contralateral eyes were compared with age-matched normal controls using t-test. RESULTS: In the 19 cases of unilateral ICE syndrome, emmetropia or hypermetropia were found in 88.9%, IOP higher than 21 mm Hg was present in one case, and anterior chamber depth lower than 2.2 mm was in 50.0%. Atrophy or dysplasia of iris existed in 3 cases, there were narrowness and/or adhesion of anterior chamber angle in 3 cases and pyramidal adhesion under gonioscopy and/or ultrasound biomicroscopy examination in 2 cases. One case represented relative paracentral scotoma in the visual field examination. Systematic disorders, including hepatitis B, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, duodenum ulceration, hypertension were found in 31.6%. In the 35 patients who received endothelial cell count, the average endothelial cell density of the contralateral eyes was (2 593.4 +/- 432.7)/mm(2), which was significantly lower than that of the normal controls (2 784.9 +/- 280.6)/mm(2) (t = -2.43, P = 0.019). The hexagonality and coefficient variation of cell size of ICE patients did not differ from that of the normal controls. CONCLUSIONS: The contralateral eye in cases diagnosed as unilateral ICE syndrome may be subclinically involved, so it is necessary to pay attention to the contralateral eye, and follow up all the patients suffered from ICE syndrome.

[Tear film changes after phacoemulsification].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate tear film changes after phacoemulsification. METHODS: This prospective randomized study involved 68 consecutive patients with age-related cataract (79 eyes) who underwent phacoemulsification. Tear break-up time, Schirmer I test (S I t) value, corneal fluorescein staining, tear film pattern by DR-1 tear interfermetry and the height of tear meniscus were measured preoperatively and 1 day and 2, 7, 14, 30, 180 days postoperatively. RESULTS: At 1 day and 2 days postoperatively, the mean tear break-up time reduced greatly, and the number of patients who showed III to V tear film pattern, the mean S I t value, the height of tear meniscus and fluorescein staining scores increased significantly (P < 0.001 for day 1, P < 0.005 for day 2). S I t value at 7 days postoperatively (P = 0.831) and the height of tear meniscus at 14 days returned to their preoperative values (P = 1.000). The tear break-up time, corneal fluorescein staining scores and the grades of tear film pattern all recovered at 30 days postoperatively (P > 0.05). At 30 days postoperatively, 19.3% of patients showed shorter tear break-up time and less S I t value than that of preoperative day. In addition, 1/9 of the patients with normal preoperative tear film experienced dry eye at 30 days postoperatively. The cases with tear break-up time < 10 seconds compared to patients with tear break-up time >/= 10 seconds were more easily to show tear instability postoperatively (relative risk 13.5, 8.25, 20.0, 39.0, 8.6, 3.9 at 1 day and 2, 7, 14, 30, 180 postoperative days, respectively). CONCLUSION: Phacoemulsification significantly alters the tear break-up time, S I t value, corneal fluorescein staining, tear film pattern and the height of tear meniscus. Some patients with normal tear film may experience dry eye after surgery. Patients with preexisting tear break-up time < 10 seconds are easily at risk of experiencing the tear film instability postoperatively.

[A primary study on soluble protein and soluble antigen of corneal stroma in Mooren ' s ulcer patients].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes of soluble protein and soluble antigen of corneal stroma in Mooren's ulcer patients and autoantibody in the patients' sera against the soluble antigen. METHODS: The corneal stromal specimens taken from 15 Mooren's ulcer patients who received lamellar keratoplasty were studied. Soluble protein and soluble antigen of the corneal stroma were extracted. The soluble protein contents were measured. The soluble corneal stromal extracts were tested by using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis technique (SDS-PAGE). The protein strips of electrophoresis were analyzed using thin layer scanning system. Peripheral vein blood of 15 patients with Mooren's ulcer was taken. Indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to test the level of autoantibody in the patients' sera against the soluble antigen of the corneal stroma. RESULTS: Soluble protein contents of corneal stroma extracts were 0.435 mg/L in the patient group and 0.645 mg/L in the normal control group. SDS-PAGE results of the affected corneal stromal extracts showed that a protein about 12 000 of molecular weight appeared at 0.92 of Rf. 12 000 protein was not found in the control group. The content of 12 000 protein was 22.1% of the total soluble protein of the involved corneal stroma. The level of autoantibody in the patients' sera against the soluble antigen was much higher than that of normal control (t = 15.15,P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The appearance of 12 000 protein in the soluble protein of the involved corneal stroma may have a connection with the soluble corneal stromal antigen. The level of the autoantibody in the patients' sera against the soluble antigen is significantly higher than that of the control. It represents that Mooren's ulcer patients have an autoimmune reaction to the corneal stroma.

[Relative quantitative analysis of corneal immunogenicity].

OBJECTIVE: To quantitate the relative immunogenicity of three major corneal cell layers (epithelium, stroma, and endothelium) among the whole corneal immunogenicity respectively. METHODS: Cellular immunity: Three porcine major corneal cell layers were heterotopically allografted to subcutaneous layer of 40 BALB-c mice respectively. Twelve days later, the peripheral white blood cells of recipients were double directly stained with anti-mouse IgG-fluorescein conjugate mAb and analyzed by flow cytometry. Humoral immunity: The suspension of porcine cornea or corneal epithelium was used as antigen to produce anti-porcine immune sera in C57BL-6 mice. With the anti-porcine immune sera, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay was performed. RESULTS: On cellular immunity detection, the immunogenicities of intact endothelium, epithelium and stroma, equal in thickness, were 70.75%, 27.63%, and 1.62% respectively. On humoral immunity detection, the immunogenicities were 62.11%, 31.77% and 6.12% in the three respective layers of equal thickness. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that the immunogenicity of corneal stroma is the lowest among the three corneal cell layers of equal thickness. The preliminary results provide the experimental basis for clinical application of xenogenic graft of corneal stroma.

An experimental study of anti-angiogenesis with recombinant human kringle 5.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anti-angiogenesis effects of recombinant human kringle 5 (rhk5) eye drops on corneal neovascularization (CNV) in rabbits induced by alkali burn. METHODS: Forty New Zealand albino rabbits were burned on the central corneas of their right eyes by 1 mol/L NaOH for 60s. Animals were randomly divided into 4 groups, 10 rabbits each group. Then rhk5 eye drops with different concentrations were applied four times daily for four weeks on each group: 5 mg/L in group 1, 10 mg/L in group 2, 20 mg/L in group 3 and carrier solution in group 4 (controls). The occurrence and development of CNV was observed every other day by slit-lamp microscope, and the area of CNV was calculated. Then the rabbits were killed on the 28th day (d), and the corneas were taken for histopathological examinations. Pearson's analysis was used to analyze the correlation between the number of inflammatory cells and the area of CNV. RESULTS: The occurrence of CNV in group 1 was (3.4 +/- 0.5) d, group 2 (6.8 +/- 0.4) d, group 3 (6.7 +/- 0.7) d and group 4 (3.7 +/- 0.5) d. Significant difference (P < 0.05) in the occurrence time of CNV was found between group 2 and the control. Compared with the control group, the CNV occurrence was significantly delayed in the group treated by 10 mg/L rhk5. No significant difference was found between control group and group 1, and between group 2 and group 3. The CNV areas of group 2 and group 3 were also smaller than the control group (P < 0.05). The area of CNV had close relationship with the retrocorneal membrane and with the number of inflammatory cells (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Topical application of recombinant human rhk5 has prominent effectiveness on the inhibition of angiogenesis induced by alkali burn.

[Research on the relationship between pathological features of the uveal melanoma and prognosis].

OBJECTIVE: To study the pathological features of uveal melanoma and to evaluate their influence on patients' prognosis. METHODS: Paraffin embedded uveal melanoma tissues of 115 cases were examined using routine pathologic methods. Three histological types were classified according to the modified Callender system and patients were followed clinically. The data were done regression and survival analysis by SPSS statistic soft. RESULTS: The patient with epithelial cell type, mixed type, and spindle cell type uveal melanoma have different life times, the average life time is 35.6 +/- 21.5 months, 63.7 +/- 37.0 months, 69.5 +/- 36.5 months in turn, patients with epithelial uveal melanoma had shorter survival time than other two types. The survival time was negatively related to the largest diameter of contact area with the sclera, the largest height and the depth of tumor invasion to the sclera. CONCLUSIONS: Epithelial uveal melanoma is more malignant than the other two types. Histological classification of this tumor combined with other pathologic features can indicate the patient's prognosis.
