Management of diabetes in South Asian communities in the UK.

This article discusses some of the specific challenges related to the management of diabetes in patients of South Asian origin. Communicating information that considers cultural, religious and language differences is important to promote effective self-management. The South Asian population in the UK is at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and cultural practices such as fasting if not managed properly can lead to deterioration in their condition. The use of appropriate information and educators with Asian language skills and an understanding of the local population's culture are important to improve self-management of diabetes in these patients.

Devices for insulin administration.

The drive to improve blood glucose control to prevent diabetic complications has resulted in many patients with type 2 diabetes, as well as those with type 1, requiring insulin therapy. Jillian Hill describes the devices now available to deliver insulin, which enable more people to manage their insulin administration independently.

Diabetes Mellitus, Type 1↗

Identifying and managing the complications of diabetes.

Diabetic complications are common, costly and have a major impact on length and quality of life. There is good evidence that they can be delayed or even prevented in type 1 and type 2 diabetes by achievement of normoglycaemia, control of other risk factors, regular review and early treatment. This article discusses the type of damage that can occur in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, which patients are particularly vulnerable and why, the costs of diabetic complications, how they can be prevented, the nursing implications of caring for patients who already have damage and helping to prevent it in others.

How to diagnose diabetes.

Rapid, unequivocal diagnosis of diabetes is essential to avoid the onset of complications in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The signs and symptoms of diabetes can vary with individuals and therefore are not reliable for diagnosis. The World Health Organization has provided guidance concerning the diagnosis of diabetes and impaired glucose regulation. This makes use of venous blood glucose results, with or without symptoms, to enable a prompt and sound diagnosis.
