[Structure and luminescence properties of Eu3+ complexes with benzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline incorporated in SiO2, SiO2-B2O3 and SiO2-B2O3-Na2O matrices].

Eu3+ Complexes with benzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline incorporated in SiO2, SiO2-B2O3 and SiO2-B2O3-Na2O matrices were prepared via the sol-gel method. Eu-doped SiO2, SiO2-B2O3 and SiO2-B2O3-Na2O luminescence materials were synthesized. The luminescence of Eu3+ was studied with excitation spectra and emission spectra. Different forms of dopants could influence the luminescence properties. The structure of Eu-doped glass was studied by comparing IR, TEM and XRD. The results showed that after the materials were annealed at 1 000 degrees C the structure was very stable because ingredient was already removed totally. The emission spectrum showed that the typical optical spectrum of Eu3+ is 5D0 --> 7Fj (j = 1, 2) at 588 nm and 614 nm. Comparing EuCl3 with Eu3+ complexes with benzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline as dopant, the latter has strong luminescence property though it has small mass fraction. The luminescence intensity of Eu(3+)-doped SiO2-B2O3 glass material was weaker than that of Eu(3+)-doped SiO2 glass material, and the former's spectrum showed that there were Si-O-B bonds. The luminescence intensity of Eu3+ was quenched by this kind of structure. The luminescence intensity of Eu(3+)-doped SiO2-B2O3-Na2O glass material was greatly increased, and the infrared spectrum illustrated that there was not vibration absorption of Si-O-B bonds. Probably Na replaced B, and Si-O-Na bonds formed. This kind of structure could enhance luminescence intensity of Eu3+ to some extend.

[FTIR investigation of organic phase containing rare earth ion in naphthenic acid-phosphonate ester-heptane system].

Naphthenic acid (NA) was mixed with PC88A in heptane, and 10 moL x L(-1) KOH aqueous solution was used to saponify the solution subsequently. The transparent and clear appearance of the obtained solution indicated the formation of w/o micell and microemusion. In the present study, micell with high saponification percentage (80%) was used to extract neodymium. The organic phase structure was characterized using FTIR spectroscopy in the extraction process. IR spectra indicate that the characteristic peaks of nu(COOH), nu(s)(COO-) and nu(P=O) shift to lower wavenumbers as the loading of Nd in organic phase increases. The results demonstrated that Nd(III) are coordinated to P=O and COO- groups simultaneously, and the supramolecules with self-assembly structure was formed containing PC88A and NA, which were binding with Nd(III) in the extracted organic phase.

[A new algorithm for generating Raman spectra using polychromatic light sources].

In the present paper, the possibility of generation of Raman spectra using polychromatic light instead of laser is discussed based on the theory of Raman scattering. When a polychromatic light impinges on a sample, the resultant scattering includes Rayleigh scattering and Raman scattering brought about by the excitation light at each corresponding frequency. Mathematical analysis demonstrates that the scattering spectra after being corrected by the frequency of scattered light are the convolution of Raman-Rayleigh jointed spectrum and the power spectrum of the excitation light. Therefore, Raman spectrum can be obtained with an algorithm of Fourier transformation using polychromatic light as an excitation source.

[FTIR spectroscopic characterization of freshly removed breast cancer tissues].

OBJECTIVE: To identify the FTIR spectroscopic characterization of breast cancer and explore the possibility of application of FTIR in differentiation of malignant and benign breast lesions. METHODS: FTIR spectra of surgically removed fresh breast tissues were measured by spectrometer equipped with mid-infrared fiber optics and an ATR probe. Peaks in the spectra were measured and relative intensity ratios were calculated and analyzed if there are significant differences between the spectra of malignant and benign breast lesions. RESULTS: There were significant differences (P < 0.05) between the spectra of malignant breast cancers and benign breast tissues in the relative intensity ratios of different peaks (I1640/ I1550 and I1160/I1120 for protein structures; I1640/I1460 and I1550/I1460 for relative content of protein and lipid; I1460/I1400 for lipid structures; I1310/I1240 for nucleic acid). CONCLUSION: FTIR spectroscopy could be a useful tool in clinical diagnosis of breast cancer.

Use of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to rapidly diagnose gastric endoscopic biopsies.

AIM: To determine if Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy of endoscopic biopsies could accurately diagnose gastritis and malignancy. METHODS: A total of 123 gastroscopic samples, including 11 cases of cancerous tissues, 63 cases of chronic atrophic gastritis tissues, 47 cases of chronic superficial gastritis tissues and 2 cases of normal tissues, were obtained from the First Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. A modified attenuated total reflectance (ATR) accessory was linked to a WQD-500 FT-IR spectrometer for spectral measurement followed by submission of the samples for pathologic analysis. The spectral characteristics for different types of gastroscopic tissues were summarized and correlated with the corresponding pathologic results. RESULTS: Distinct differences were observed in the FT-IR spectra of normal, atrophic gastritis, superficial gastritis and malignant gastric tissues. The sensitivity of FT-IR for detection of gastric cancer, chronic atrophic gastritis and superficial gastritis was 90.9%, 82.5%, 91.5%, and specificity was 97.3%, 91.7%, 89.5% respectively. CONCLUSION: FT-IR spectroscopy can distinguish gastric inflammation from malignancy.

In vivo and in situ detection of colorectal cancer using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

AIM: Real-time and rapid identification of the malignant tissue can be performed during or before surgical operation. Here we aimed to detect in vivo and in situ colorectal cancer by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and fiber-optic technology. METHODS: A total of five patients with large intestine cancer were detected in vivo and in situ. Of them, three cases of colon cancer and one case of cecum cancer were detected intraoperatively and in vivo by using a FTIR spectrometer during surgical operation, and one case of rectum cancer was explored non-invasively and in vivo before the surgical operation. Normal and malignant colorectal tissues were detected in vivo and in situ using FTIR spectroscopy on the basis of fundamental studies. RESULTS: There were significant differences between FTIR spectra of normal and malignant colorectal tissues detected in vivo and in situ. Experimental results revealed that the spectral characteristics of normal and malignant tissues found in vivo and in situ were similar to those obtained from in vitro measurement in our previous fundamental research. CONCLUSION: FTIR fiber-optic attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopy can identify in situ and in vivo colorectal cancer. FTIR spectroscopic method with fiber optics is a non-invasive, rapid, accurate and in vivo cancer detection technique in clinical diagnosis.

Diagnosis of gastric inflammation and malignancy in endoscopic biopsies based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is an effective tool for investigation of chemical changes at the molecular level. We previously demonstrated that FT-IR spectroscopy can reliably distinguish multiple types of carcinoma from healthy tissue. Because various stomach diseases are common, it is important to explore a noninvasive and rapid method to detect malignancy and gastritis in endoscopic biopsies. Our aim was to classify endoscopic biopsies into healthy, gastritis, and malignancy through the use of FT-IR spectroscopy. METHODS: A total of 103 endoscopic samples, including 19 cases of cancer, 35 cases of chronic atrophic gastritis, 29 cases of chronic superficial gastritis, and 20 healthy tissue samples, were obtained at the First Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. A modified attenuated total reflectance accessory was linked to a WQD-500 FT-IR spectrometer for biopsy measurement. The spectral characteristics for different types of tissues were correlated with the corresponding pathology results. The gastric biopsies were classified by FT-IR spectroscopy and a discriminant analysis method. RESULTS: There were significant differences in the FT-IR spectra of four types of gastric biopsies. The discriminant analysis results demonstrated that the sensitivity of FT-IR detection for healthy, superficial gastritis, atrophic gastritis, and gastric cancer was 90%, 90%, 66%, 74%, respectively, which could help satisfy clinical diagnostic requirements. CONCLUSION: FT-IR spectroscopy can distinguish disease processes in gastric endoscopic biopsies.

[The synthesis and characteristic of Co3O4 nanocrystals].

The authors found a new method to synthesize Co3O4 nanocrystals, which were synthesized using Co(CH3COO)2 x4H2O and PVP as precursor. The as-prepared products were measured by SEM, TEM and XRD. Co(CH3COO)2 x 4H2O and PVP were dissolved together in a kind of solvent. Then, the solution was vaporized in water bath at 60 degrees C till the solution became viscid. The viscid solution was transferred into a ceramic boat and was dried in a oven at 110 degrees C for 12 hours. Finally, the dried sample was calcined in tube-like stove at 400 degrees C for 2 hours in air to produce the Co3O4 nanocrystals. To prepare the precursor composed of PVP and Co (CH3COO)2 x 4H2O, the authors employed two different solvent (ethanol and H2O). It was found that different appearance of Co3O4 nanocrystals was achieved by using different solvent. When ethanol is used as solvent, the prepared spherical particles with diameter of about 1 microm were consisted of Co3O4 nanocrystals with diameter of 20-50 nm. However, only Co3O4 nanocrystals with diameter of 20 nm were synthesized when H2O is used as solvent. This indicated that the solvent played a big role for the final appearance of Co3O4 nanocrystals.

[Nodular goiter surface detection by FTIR spectroscopy].

A novel non-invasive diagnosis method of nodular goiter is proposed in the present study by recording FTIR spectra on the skin overlying thyroids using fiber optical technique and attenuated total reflection probe. FTIR spectra from 20 nodular goiters and 34 normal controls were collected. Twenty seven spectral variables of 13 bands including peak position and relative intensities were extracted from the FTIR spectra so that statistic work could be conducted using SPSS. The results demonstrate that peak positions of 2 925 and 1 250 cm(-1) both shifted toward lower wave number (P < 0.05) in the FTIR spectra of nodular goiter. The relative intensity ratios of H1 740/H1 460, H1 160/H1 460, and H1 160/H1 120 decreased significantly in FTIR spectra of nodular goiter (P < 0.05). Inversely, H1 080/H1 460 increased significantly (P < 0.05) in nodular goiter. The above statistic differences suggest that nodular goiter may produce some characteristic chemical substance which can diffuse onto the surface of skin and therefore be detectable using FTIR spectroscopy with fiber optic techniques. These differences are the basis of diagnosing nodular goiter by FTIR surface detection.

[A comparative study of malignant tissue diagnosis using ATR and microscopy FTIR spectroscopy].

A comparative FTIR study was undertaken between ATR (attenuated total reflection) and infrared microscopy on their application to measuring the same tissue for cancer diagnosis. The measurements showed that the coincidence of pathological diagnosis with ATR is higher than that of microscopy FTIR method. The result indicated that the measured area of tumor tissue is critical. The area for microscopy measurement is approximately 250 microm2, it reflects the heterogeneity of the tissue. However, the ATR measurement provides more information of malignant tissue for the measured area is 1.9 x 10(5) times than microscopy. Therefore, ATR exhibit the high accuracy in cancer detection for clinical application.

[FTIR spectroscopic study on gastric tissue samples from gastroscopy].

A total of 184 specimens from gastroscopy were studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The spectra of small-sized gastric endoscope samples with high quality were measured using the modified FTIR spectrometer with a MCT detector. The results show that the spectra of chronic superficial gastritis are similar to those of the normal block tissue in our previous study. But there are significant differences in band location and relative intensity between the spectra of chronic superficial gastritis and those of normal gastric tissues. Similarly, the differences exist in the spectra of chronic atrophic gastritis and those of malignant gastric tissues. In addition, the subtraction technique can provide more information to identify well the gastric samples of chronic atrophic gastritis, superficial gastritis and gastric cancer from endoscope the detection. These results indicate that FTIR spectroscopy exhibits potential to diagnose the gastric samples from gastroscopy.

FT-IR spectroscopic analysis of normal and cancerous tissues of esophagus.

AIM: To investigate the special Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra in normal and cancerous tissues of esophagus. METHODS: Twenty-seven pairs of normal and cancerous tissues of esophagus were studied by using FT-IR and the special spectra characteristics were analyzed in different tissues. RESULTS: Different spectra were found in normal and cancerous tissues. The peak at 1 550/cm was weak and wide in cancerous tissues but strong and high in normal tissues. The ratio of I 1 647/I 1 550 was 2.0 in normal tissues and 2.36 in cancerous tissues (P<0.05). The ratio of I 1 550/I 1 080 was 4.5 in normal tissues and 3.4 in cancerous tissues (P<0.01). The peak at 1453 /cm was higher than at 1 402/cm in normal tissue and lower than at 1 402/cm in cancerous tissues. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that FTIR may be used in clinical diagnosis.
