[Influence of stretch strain and pressure on expression of osteoblasts' FOS protein].

Uniaxial stretch strain and compressive pressure of 2 atm were applied to rat's osteoblasts, and then immunohistochemistrical staining was used to detect the expression of osteoblasts' c-fos gene. The experiment result indicated the osteoblasts' FOS proteins increased prominently, and the FOS proteins concentrated in nucleolus after having endured two different kinds of loadings. It is very important to prompt stress and strain in promoting osteoblast proliferation.

Ultrastructural changes in non-specific duodenitis.

AIM: To investigate the ultrastructural and morphological changes of non-specific duodenitis (NSD) in an attempt to grade them according to the extent of the lesions. METHODS: Biopsies were taken from the mucosa of duodenal bulb of 44 patients selected from the patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for epigastric discomforts. From each patient, two pinch biopsies on the same area were obtained from duodenal bulb. One was for scanning electron microscopy and the other was stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Warthin-Starry silver and both were then examined under light microscope. A total of 12 specimens (three from each degree of the normal and I-III of NSD diagnosed and graded by histology) selected from the 44 patients were dehydrated, critical point dried, coated with gold palladium and examined under a JEOL JSM-30 scanning electron microscope (SEM) at 20 kV. RESULTS: According to the ultrastructural morphologic changes, non-specific duodenitis was divided into normal (as control group), mild, moderate and severe degrees according to results of SEM. The normal villi of duodenal bulb were less than 0.2 mm. There were inflammation cells, occasionally red blood cells and macrophages on the mucosal epithelial surface. Erosion and desquamation of epithelium could be seen. Three cases (25%, 3/12) had gastric metaplasia and Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection could be found in 5 cases (41.67%, 5/12) in duodenal bulb mucosa. The most distinctive feature was the ulcer-like defect on the surface of epithelial cells. CONCLUSION: Non-specific duodenitis is a separate entity disease caused by different factors. SEM is of value as an aid in the diagnosis of mucosal diseases of duodenum.

Charge couple device-based system for 3-dimensional real time positioning on the assessment of segmental range of motion of lumbar spine.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the tested results of the segmental range of motion (ROM) of lumbar spine by charge couple device (CCD)-based system for 3-dimensional real-time positioning (CCD system), and to analyze its clinical significance. METHODS: Seven patients with lumbar joint dysfunction and 8 healthy subjects were tested twice by the CCD-based system with an interval of 10 min. RESULTS: The ROM of the patients was obviously lesser than that of the healthy subjects. The measuring data of segmental ROM of lumbar spine by CCD system is correlated significantly to the same data checked later on the same subjects in every direction of the movements. The differences between two checks are usually less than 1 degree. CONCLUSION: Specially designed CCD based system for 3-dimensional real-time positioning could objectively reflect the segmental ROM of lumbar spine. The system would be of great clinical significance in the assessment of the biomechanical dysfunction of lumbar spine and the effect of the treatment applied.

[Sexual dysfunction in female patients with chronic renal insufficiency].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence, the main manifestations and related factors of sexual dysfunction in female patients with chronic renal insufficiency (CRI). METHODS: A multi-factor cooperation cross-section study was conducted. The prevalence and severity of sexual dysfunction were assessed using SCASF Microsoft. RESULTS: The prevalence of sexual dysfunction in patients with CRI was higher than that in those without renal insufficiency (P<0.05). The main manifestations in female patients were "decreased libido, lack of orgasm and no feeling of sex pleasure". Stratified analysis on uremia showed that the prevalence and severity of sexual dysfunction of the patients on hemodialysis were similar to those on peritoneum dialysis. The women with kidney allografts suffered less "decreased-libido, lack of orgasm and no feeling of sex pleasure". Multivariate analyses demonstrated that anemia, depression, and the use of beta-blocker were risk factors for decreased libido. Ageing was a risk factor for "lack of orgasm". The use of r-HuEpo was inversely associated with "lack of orgasm". CONCLUSION: Sexual dysfunctions are common in female patients with CRI. The main manifestations are decreased libido, lack of orgasm and no feeling of sex pleasure. The replacement therapy, especially kidney transplantation, could decrease the prevalence or severity of sexual dysfunction. The genesis of sexual dysfunction is multifactorial, including age, physiological factors, psychological factors and medical conditions.

[Clinical analysis of sphenoid disease manifesting orbital apex syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship of sphenoid disease and orbital apex syndrome and to improve the diagnosis of sphenoid disease. METHODS: Twelve patients with sphenoid disease manifesting orbital apex syndrome from 2000 to 2004 were retrospectively analyzed, especially the processes of both diagnosis and treatment. The factors which may lead to misdiagnosis were discussed. RESULTS: All the twelve patients failed to be correctly diagnosed at the ophthalmology department. Having been undergone CT or MRI, seven cases of sphenoiditis, three cases of polyps of sphenoidal sinus and two cases of sphenethmoid mucocele were confirmed respectively. All of the patients underwent endoscopic sphenoid surgery. The symptoms of the patients were improved or disappeared after the operations. CONCLUSIONS: The sphenoid disease with orbital apex syndrome was easily misdiagnosed. The possible causes of misdiagnosis were: low incidence of the disease, nonspecific eye symptoms, and unawareness of the doctor, especially ophthalmologist. CT or MRI are the gold standards of diagnosis of sphenoid disease. Endoscopic sinus surgery is effective and safe technique for the treatment of the disease.

[Relationship of MAGE-A1 expression with Ki-67 and tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte response in non-small cell lung carcinoma].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Recent studies revealed a possible close association between the expression of some members of tumor-specific antigen MAGE (melanoma antigen) family and actively proliferated infantile cells. But the correlation of MAGE-A1 expression with proliferation of tumor cells and immune response at host local site has not been reported to date. Our study was to investigate the expression of MAGE-A1 in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), and its relationship with Ki-67 expression, tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) response, histologic grade, and pathological type. METHODS: Thirty NSCLC samples in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections were examined for MAGE-A1, Ki-67 and TIL response using SP immunohistochemical technique. RESULTS: The positive expression rate of MAGE-A1 was 80.00%(24/30) with high expression rate of 58.33%(14/24) and low expression rate of 41.67%(10/24). The positive expression rate of Ki-67 was 93.33%(28/30) with high expression rate of 57.14%(16/28) and low expression rate of 42.86% (12/28). TIL response was observed in 22 patients. There was a significant relationship between MAGE-A1 positive expression and Ki-67 positive expression (rs=0.578, P< 0.005), as well as between MAGE-A1 positive expression and TIL response (rs=0.505, P< 0.005). However, MAGE-A1 expression was not significantly correlated with histologic grade and pathological type (P >0.05). CONCLUSION: The NSCLC cells with MAGE-A1 positive expression possess high proliferation activity; meanwhile, the up-regulation of MAGE-A1 indicates the increase of antigen in tumor cells and the increase of local TIL response, indicating that MAGE-A1 may have potential to be used as a target for immunotherapy in NSCLC patient.

[Studies on sexual dysfunction in male patients with chronic renal insufficiency].

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence, main manifestation and related factors of sexual dysfunction in male patients with chronic renal insufficiency (CRI). METHODS: A cross-section study was conducted by six hospitals in Sichuan Province. The prevalence and severity of sexual dysfunction were assessed by SCASF microsoft among patients with chronic renal disease. Logistic regression was used to examine and test the association between sexual dysfunction and other medical conditions. RESULTS: The prevalence of sexual dysfunction was wider in patients with CRI than in those without. The main manifestations in male patients were decreased libido, erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. Stratified analysis in uremia showed that the prevalence and severity of sexual dysfunction were similar between patients on haemodialysis(HD) and those on peritoneal dialysis(PD). The patients receiving no replacement treatment suffered more decreased libido and performance anxiety than dialyzed patients (HD and PD) and transplantation patients(Tx). The patients receiving no replacement treatment and dialysis suffered more erectile dysfunction than Tx men. A multivariable analysis demonstrated that the duration, creatinine clearance(Ccr), parathyroid hormone (PTH), albumin(Alb) were not associated with sexual dysfunction. The use of beta-blocker, anemia and depression were risky factors for decreased libido, and increasing age was a risky factor for erectile dysfunction. The use of angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor(ACEI)/angiotention receptor antagonist (ARB) and recombinant human erythropoietin(r-HuEpo) were protective factors for erectile dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS: The main manifestations of sexual dysfunction in male patients with CRI are decreased libido, erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. The replacement therapy, especially transplantation, can decrease the prevalence or severity of sexual dysfunction. The genesis of sexual dysfunction is multifactorial, including age, physiological factors, psychological factors and medical conditions.

Photo-Fenton degradation of dichloromethane for gas phase treatment.

A continuous photo-Fenton process has been used for the degradation of gaseous dichloromethane (DCM). By absorbing gaseous DCM into a reactive Fenton mixture, the scrubbing and degradation processes could be completed in the one reactor. Operating with a Dark Fenton solution did not result in removal of DCM any better than simply using MilliQ water. This was because the Fe(II) quickly converted to Fe(III) but was unable to regenerate. After a short time, the Fenton process was no longer operating and the DCM quickly accumulated in the reaction solution, preventing further accumulation due to a decreasing concentration gradient in the reactive solution. However, by using UV light and increasing the retention time from 20 to 50 s, there was sufficient time for the reactive solution to regenerate and continuous operation could achieve at least 65% removal of DCM from the gaseous phase at ambient temperature.
