Community in the workplace: a proven retention strategy.

People yearn for a return to community, seeking a sense of connection with others. Community in the workplace is increasingly important, because many of us spend more time at work than we do anywhere else! The authors discuss community at work and the stages of formation that true communities experience. Practical helpful strategies for the nurse leader are shared.

Joy at work!: creating a positive workplace.

How can we regain a sense of joy through our work? Many nurses feel disconnected from their organizations, morale is plummeting, and employee mistrust and cynicism are growing. Reversing these trends is crucial in the face of current and future labor shortages. The author shares recent information on healthcare workers who experience joy through their work with implications for today's nurse leaders.

Emergence of the free agent nurse workforce.

The health care world is changing rapidly and so is its workforce. As nurses are welcomed as copartners in care delivery and design, a new relationship between employer and employee is forged. Nurses who see themselves as free agents, working in partnership with their employers, function within a very different employment relationship than in past years. The concept of free agency is more familiar to nurses in the Generation X age cohort but is of great interest to all nurses and nurse administrators. Free agency is more of a mindset than an employment status and is explored in this article.

Strengthening organizational commitment. Understanding the concept as a basis for creating effective workforce retention strategies.

One of the most significant challenges facing any health care leader today is that of building commitment among followers. The last decade, with its tumultuous changes in our organizations, left many employees emotionally detached from their workplace. Mistrust, increasing cynicism, escalating financial pressures, and continuing challenges adversely impact our workforce's organizational commitment. The author explores the concept of commitment, which can serve as a basis for developing practical effective retention strategies.
