The European Working Time Regulations (EWTR) have implications for all NHS and independent sector employees. The aim of the EWTR is to protect employees' health and safety by encouraging improvements in the working environment.

Making sense of your employment contract.

Whether you work in the NHS or the independent sector you do not need reminding of the changes that are occurring within the delivery of perioperative services, as employers strive to comply with Agenda for Change, the Working Time Regulations and the Modernisation Agenda within the UK. The impact of such change is that you the employee may have to change your shift patterns or take on more responsibilities and extra workload.

Making sense of job references.

Have you ever been asked to be a referee and write a reference for a work colleague? If it is a task you have not done before the prospect can be quite daunting: no one wants to give a bad reference and harm the prospects of a work colleague obtaining another employment post or even a promotion. Perhaps you are a manager or team leader that has experience of writing job references? But are you aware of the legal implications of writing a reference?

Patients now have a willingness to litigate when things go wrong with their care. One day you may have to write a statement for the purpose of forming a defence in a clinical negligence claim. Making sense of grievance procedures.

In the previous edition of the British Journal of Perioperative Nursing, Susan Pirie, AfPP Professional Officer outlined the purpose of the disciplinary process and best practice for employers managing such a process. Managing competency within a perioperative setting.

In the second article of the PEPDN series, John Beesley introduces practitioners who are involved in training and practice development to the key contemporary drivers which are encouraging competency frameworks to be established within a perioperative setting. The article outlines established benchmarked competency frameworks and provides guidance for those involved in practice development who are anticipating the formulation and introduction of a competency framework within their own operating departments.

Reducing NHS bureaucracy. Arm's-length bodies review, July 2004.

The number of NHS (National Health Service, UK) bodies that work at arm's-length from the Department of Health will be reduced, saving at least pounds sterling 500m in funds and increasing resources that can be channelled directly to front line NHS patient care. John Reid, Health Secretary, has decided that by 2007-08 there will be a 50% reduction in the number of arm's-length bodies and a reduction in posts of 25%.
