Electrochemical bursting oscillations on a high-dimensional slow subsystem.

Experiments are carried out with a chemical burster, the electrodissolution of iron in sulfuric acid solution. The system exhibits bursting oscillations in which fast periodic spiking is superimposed on chaotic, slow oscillations. Regularization of the slow dynamics, i.e., transition from chaotic to periodic bursting oscillations, is investigated through changes in the experimental parameters (circuit potential, external resistance, and electrode diameter). These transitions are accompanied by changes in the fast dynamics; a 'Hopf-Hopf' spiking is transformed to 'homoclinic-Hopf' spiking. The periodic bursting is destroyed through a period lengthening process in which the fast spiking region extends to a large fraction of the slow oscillatory cycle until there is no clear distinction between the fast and slow oscillations. Finally, it is shown that the time-scales of the fast spiking and, to a lesser extent, of the slow oscillations (or the occurrence of fast spiking) can be controlled with periodic perturbation of an experimental parameter, the circuit potential.

Cooperative stochastic behavior in the onset of localized corrosion.

Stochastic temporal and spatiotemporal models of metastable pitting on a metal surface are presented. A stochastic reaction-diffusion model accounts for the effects of local changes in concentration, potential drop, and oxide film damage on the nucleation of subsequent events. The cooperative interactions among events can lead to the formation of clusters of metastable pits and to an explosive growth in the total number of pits. Recent progress in the studies of such phenomena is reviewed. New results based on a mean-field analysis of the model and numerical simulations on critical nucleation effects are reported.

Desynchronization of coupled electrochemical oscillators with pulse stimulations.

Various stimulation desynchronization techniques are explored in a laboratory experiment on electrochemical oscillators, a system that exhibits transient dynamics, heterogeneities, and inherent noise. Stimulation with a short, single pulse applied at a vulnerable phase can effectively desynchronize a cluster. A double pulse method, that can be applied at any phase, can be improved either by adding an extra weak pulse between the original two pulses or by adding noise to the first pulse.

Predicting mutual entrainment of oscillators with experiment-based phase models.

We show that mutual entrainment in interacting oscillators can be characterized using phase models that are developed from direct experiments with a single oscillator. The models are used to predict order-disorder transitions in populations and the dependence of order on system parameters; the description is verified in independent experiments in sets of chemical oscillators. The experiment-based model properly describes in-phase and antiphase mutual entrainment with positive and negative interactions in small sets as well as dynamical clustering in populations of oscillators.

Synchronization of non-phase-coherent chaotic electrochemical oscillations.

Experiments on phase and generalized synchronization of two coupled, nonidentical chaotic electrochemical oscillations are presented. We adapt measures of characterizing synchronization of a non-phase-coherent chaotic behavior and compare its properties and physicochemical mechanism to those of a phase-coherent behavior. Phase synchronization sets in along with the onset of generalized synchronization for the non-phase-coherent oscillations in contrast to phase-coherent oscillations in which the phase synchronization usually occurs at a weaker coupling strength.

Noise-aided synchronization of coupled chaotic electrochemical oscillators.

We report experimental and numerical results on noise-enhanced synchronization of two coupled chaotic oscillators. Enhanced synchronization is achieved through superimposing small-amplitude Gaussian noise on a common system parameter of the two chaotic oscillators. A resonancelike behavior is found: at an optimum level of noise, maximum synchronization is attained. The simulations show that the resonance behavior occurs with both identical and nonidentical oscillators. Noncommon (asymmetric and independent) noise does not enhance synchronization; common noise seems to enhance synchronization.

Beneficial effects of intraventricularly administered BMP-7 following a striatal 6-hydroxydopamine lesion.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7), also named osteogenic protein-1 (OP-1), on the progression of a striatal 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesion. BMP-7, a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily of proteins, has been shown to have protective effects in other animal models of neuronal damage. In this study, male Fischer 344 rats received striatal 6-OHDA lesions followed 1 week later by an intraventricular dose of BMP-7. No significant effect of BMP-7 treatment on spontaneous locomotor activity was observed, however BMP-7 significantly increased the density of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunoreactivity (TH-ir) in the substantia nigra (SN) pars compacta, in the lesioned hemisphere [31.7+/-5.2 (optical density (O.D.) arbitrary units) control vs. 50.2+/-4.3 O.D. BMP-7-treated; p<0.05]. Interestingly, BMP-7 significantly increased TH-ir in the SN of the non-lesioned hemisphere (pars reticulata: 14.8+/-1.19 O.D. control vs. 36+/-2.6 O.D. BMP-7-treated, p<0.05; pars compacta: 29.0+/-4.9 O.D. control vs. 64.4+/-6.9 O.D. BMP-7-treated, p<0.001). A significant increase in DA concentration in the contralateral, non-lesioned hemisphere was also noted (113.2 ng/g control vs. 198.2 ng/g BMP-7-treated, p<0.01). In contrast to other intraventricularly administered neurotrophic factors, BMP-7 was not associated with an increase in the sensitivity to pain. These results suggest that BMP-7 is able to act as a dopaminotrophic agent without unwanted side effects and as such may be a useful pharmacological tool in the treatment of Parkinson's disease in humans.

Amplitude death through a Hopf bifurcation in coupled electrochemical oscillators: experiments and simulations.

Amplitude death was observed in experiments with two coupled periodic electrochemical oscillators without time delay. Simulation results confirmed that the observed amplitude death was obtained via a Hopf bifurcation. The two oscillators must have a minimum discrepancy and both be near their individual Hopf bifurcations for amplitude death to occur. Phase drift (coexisting with unstable asymmetric phase-locked solutions), amplitude death, and in-phase synchronization were observed in both the experiments and simulations as coupling strength was increased. In addition, the simulations showed that a stable asymmetric phase-locked solution exists between the phase drift and amplitude death regions.

Rapid convergence of time-averaged frequency in phase synchronized systems.

Numerical and experimental evidences are presented to show that many phase synchronized systems of nonidentical chaotic oscillators, where the chaotic state is reached through a period-doubling cascade, show rapid convergence of the time-averaged frequency. The speed of convergence toward the natural frequency scales as the inverse of the measurement period. The results also suggest an explanation for why such chaotic oscillators can be phase synchronized.

Experiments on coherence resonance: noisy precursors to Hopf bifurcations.

Experimental and numerical evidence of coherence resonance in an electrochemical system is reported. External noise with a Gaussian distribution is superimposed on the system when the anodic current is exhibiting stationary (fixed point) dynamics below a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The amplitude of the added stochastic perturbations is increased monotonically and the induced oscillatory behavior is analyzed. It is observed, both in experiments and in simulations, that the regularity of the noise induced current oscillations reaches a maximum value for an optimum noise level. This is indicative of coherence resonance and can be explained with a mechanism based on noisy precursors to a Hopf bifurcation.

Noise enhanced phase synchronization and coherence resonance in sets of chaotic oscillators with weak global coupling.

The effect of noise on phase synchronization in small sets and larger populations of weakly coupled chaotic oscillators is explored. Both independent and correlated noise are found to enhance phase synchronization of two coupled chaotic oscillators below the synchronization threshold; this is in contrast to the behavior of two coupled periodic oscillators. This constructive effect of noise results from the interplay between noise and the locking features of unstable periodic orbits. We show that in a population of nonidentical chaotic oscillators, correlated noise enhances synchronization in the weak coupling region. The interplay between noise and weak coupling induces a collective motion in which the coherence is maximal at an optimal noise intensity. Both the noise-enhanced phase synchronization and the coherence resonance numerically observed in coupled chaotic Rössler oscillators are verified experimentally with an array of chaotic electrochemical oscillators.

Chaotic cluster itinerancy and hierarchical cluster trees in electrochemical experiments.

Experiments on an array of 64 globally coupled chaotic electrochemical oscillators were carried out. The array is heterogeneous due to small variations in the properties of the electrodes and there is also a small amount of noise. Over some ranges of the coupling parameter, dynamical clustering was observed. The precision-dependent cluster configuration is analyzed using hierarchical cluster trees. The cluster configurations varied with time: spontaneous changes of number of clusters and their configurations were detected. Simple transitions occurred with the switch of a single element or groups of elements. During more complicated transitions subclusters were exchanged among clusters but original cluster configurations were revisited. At weaker coupling the system itinerated among lower-dimensional quasistationary chaotic two-cluster states and higher-dimensional states with many clusters. In this region the transitions showed characteristics of on-off intermittency.

Locking-based frequency measurement and synchronization of chaotic oscillators with complex dynamics.

We propose a method for the determination of a characteristic oscillation frequency for a broad class of chaotic oscillators generating complex signals. It is based on the locking of standard periodic self-sustained oscillators by an irregular signal. The method is applied to experimental data from chaotic electrochemical oscillators, where other approaches of frequency determination (e.g., based on Hilbert transform) fail. Using the method we characterize the effects of phase synchronization for systems with ill-defined phase by external forcing and due to mutual coupling.

Noise-enhanced phase synchronization of chaotic oscillators.

The effects of noise on phase synchronization (PS) of coupled chaotic oscillators are explored. In contrast to coupled periodic oscillators, noise is found to enhance phase synchronization significantly below the threshold of PS. This constructive role of noise has been verified experimentally with chaotic electrochemical oscillators of the electrodissolution of Ni in sulfuric acid solution.

Emerging coherence in a population of chemical oscillators.

Coherence of interacting oscillating entities has importance in biological, chemical, and physical systems. We report experiments on populations of chemical oscillators and verify a 25-year-old theory of Kuramoto that predicts that global coupling in a set of smooth limit-cycle oscillators with different frequencies produces a phase transition in which some of the elements synchronize. Both the critical point and the predicted dependence of order on coupling are seen in the experiments. We extend the studies both to relaxation and to chaotic oscillators and characterize the quantitative similarities and differences among the types of systems.

Collective dynamics of chaotic chemical oscillators and the law of large numbers.

Experiments on the nontrivial collective dynamics and phase synchronization of populations of nonidentical chaotic electrochemical oscillators are presented. Without added coupling no deviation from the law of large numbers is observed. Deviations do arise with weak global or short-range coupling; large, irregular, and periodic mean field oscillations occur along with (partial) phase synchronization.
