Incremental validity of the MMPI-A content scales in a residential treatment facility.

The current study explores the incremental validity of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent (MMPI-A) content scales. Participants were 335 adolescents (250 boys and 85 girls) between the ages of 13 and 18 who were receiving mental health services from a residential treatment facility. Regression analyses were conducted to identify the amount of additional variance accounted for by the content scales over the clinical scales in predicting scores on a clinician rating form of psychological symptomatology. Several of the MMPI-A content scales demonstrated significant incremental validity above the clinical scales in predicting clinician ratings of adolescents' behavior and personality characteristics. The clinical scales also demonstrated incremental validity in reference to the content scales, indicating then that the two sets of scales provide complementary information. Magnitude of the additional criterion variance predicted was modest.

MMPI-2 validity scale characteristics in a correctional sample.

The current study investigated the proportion of content-nonresponsive and content-responsive faking Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) protocols in a state corrections sample. Participants were 51,486 inmates who completed the MMPI-2 at the time they entered the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction system. Overall, approximately 79% of the study participants produced valid profiles. Of the entire study sample, 11.3% produced content-nonresponsive profiles, and 9.4% produced content-responsive faking profiles. African Americans produced a higher proportion of content-nonresponsive profiles than Caucasians, and women were slightly more likely than men to produce content-responsive faking profiles. Differences in level of education between African Americans and Caucasians did not account for the disparity in content-nonresponsive profiles. Implications for current practice and future research are discussed.

Use of the MMPI-2 in the treatment of offenders.

The MMPI-2 is among the most frequently relied upon inventories for personality assessment. The test is utilized across a variety of nonforensic settings (e.g., psychiatric inpatient and outpatient) as an aid in formulating treatment plans, assessing treatment progress, and measuring treatment outcome. The MMPI-2 can also be utilized in forensic settings in a manner similar to its use in other settings, such as identifying treatment goals and evaluating treatment efficacy. Various MMPI-2 scales can identify an individual's treatment needs, reveal potential obstacles to treatment, and serve as a measure of treatment efficacy. Such information can be very helpful to the clinician in formulating or modifying a course of treatment for offenders. This article provides an overview of the use of the MMPI-2 in treatment planning and describes the relation between scores on the validity, clinical, and various supplementary scales and treatment-related issues.
