Slow anion exchange, conformational equilibria, and fluorescent sensing in venus flytrap aminopyridinium-based anion hosts.

The synthesis, anion binding, and conformational properties of a series of 3-aminopyridinium-based, tripodal, tricationic hosts for anions are described. Slow anion and conformational exchange on the (1)H NMR time scale at low temperature, coupled with NMR titration, results in a high level of understanding of the anion-binding properties of the compounds, particularly with respect to significant conformational change resulting from induced fit complexation. Peak selectivity for halides, particularly Cl(-), is observed. The approach has been extended to dipodal and tripodal podands based on 3-aminopyridinium "arms" containing photoactive anthracenyl moieties. The 1,3,5-tripodal host shows a remarkable selectivity for acetate over other anions, in contrast to the analogous unsubstituted tris(3-aminopyridinium) analogue, despite the fact that low-temperature (1)H NMR experiments reveal a total of four acetate-binding conformations. Photodimerization of anthracene units results in the formation of potential fluorescent anion sensors.

Facile pyrazolylborate ligand degradation at lanthanide centers: X-ray crystal structures of pyrazolylborinate-bridged bimetallics.

Adventitious hydrolysis of a number of different complexes with the molecular formula Ln(Tp(Me2))(2)X [Tp(Me2) = (HB(dmpz)(3)), where X is a basic anionic ligand] in various solvents, yielded crystals of highly insoluble dimers of the general formula [Ln(Tp(Me2))(mu-BOp(Me2))](2) (1) [Ln = La, Ce, Sm; BOp(Me2) = (HBO(dmpz)(2))(2)(-); dmpzH = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole]. The results of several single-crystal X-ray determinations are reported. One metal nitrogen distance, that lying across from the two negatively charged bridging oxygen atoms, is 0.06 A longer than the others, suggesting an unusual trans influence at a lanthanide center. The formation of 1 is proposed to involve the intermediacy of Ln(Tp(Me2))(2)OH formed by protonolysis with adventitious water.

Dimeric self-assembling capsules derived from the highly flexible tribenzylamine skeleton.

Tris(m-ureidobenzyl)amines dimerize both in solid state and in solution to give molecular capsules which are able to encapsulate small molecules. The self-assembly was confirmed by crystal X-ray analysis and NMR spectroscopy. The X-ray structure showed the encapsulation of one molecule of CH(2)Cl(2). This new type of capsules presents a propeller-like topology and a belt of six hydrogen-bonded ureas. Encapsulation studies in solution and heterodimerization processes are also disclosed.

Synthesis and structural analysis of dehydrophenylalanine cyclophanes.

The syntheses and structures of three cyclophanes containing two (Z)-dehydrophenylalanine residues are reported; the length of the tethers between the two amino acid residues is easily altered and changing this parameter has a significant effect on the solid state structures of the cyclophanes.

Intermolecular interactions in (arene)chromium carbonyl compounds: prediction of chiral crystal packing from racemate structure.

Six X-ray crystal structures are reported, all containing substituted triphenylmethanol derivative 4 either alone or as its mono or bis(chromium tricarbonyl) complexes. All four chromium complexes studied crystallize with two independent molecules in the crystallographic asymmetric unit. It is demonstrated that from the X-ray crystal structure of the acentric racemic (+/-)-(1pR,1' 'R)(1pS,1' 'S)-[Cr(CO)(3)(eta(6)-t-BuC(6)H(3)(CMeOMe)CPh(2)OH)], (+/-)-3, it is possible to deduce the 4-fold helical structure of the chiral (-)-(1pR,1' 'R) isomer, (-)-3. The bimetallic derivatives demonstrate the ability to control intermolecular interactions by the positioning of relative stereochemistry.

Cooperative anion binding and electrochemical sensing by modular podands.

A series of podands based on two or three hydrogen bonding "arms" situated in mutually ortho, meta, or para relationships about an aryl core have been prepared, and their affinities for simple inorganic anions were measured. Of the two-arm hosts the meta compound and to a lesser extent the ortho host exhibit a cooperative anion binding effect. The two arms function essentially independently in the para derivative. The mutually meta three-arm host shows dramatically enhanced cooperative binding. Conformational changes within the meta two-arm host result in significantly enhanced electrochemical anion sensing compared with the more conformationally rigid three-arm host.

A biosynthetic proposal for ring formation in the antitumor agent halichomycin. Asymmetric synthesis of the AB-carbon backbone of halichomycin.

[reaction: see text] A biosynthetic proposal for ring formation in the antitumor agent halichomycin is presented in which macrocyclization of the putative prehalichomycin intermediate 1 is the first step. Compound 2 then undergoes dehydration to the alpha-keto N-acylimine 3 followed by tandem nucleophilic addition of the C(16)-hydroxyl to form the hemimacrolactam. A stereospecific Michael ring closure and enol protonation complete C-ring assembly. So far, synthetic efforts toward 1 have resulted in 8.

Phosphoramidate-mediated conversion of carbonyl ligands into isocyanide ligands: a new approach to chiral isocyanide ligands.

Metal isocyanides have been used and studied by organometallic chemists for many years and, as a result, they have a rich and interesting chemistry. The nature of metal-free isocyanides and the methods of making isocyanide complexes, however, has resulted in the vast majority of studies to date being performed with structurally simple isocyanides. We report here a new approach to the synthesis of isocyanide ligands that involves the reaction of a metal carbonyl ligand with the anion of a phosphoramidate. As phosphoramidates can be synthesised in one step from amines, our method means that the structural diversity of readily available amines, particularly chiral amines, can now be incorporated into isocyanide ligands.
