Triangular assembly through charged hydrogen bonds in polar solvent.

We have demonstrated a triangular assembly driven by 12 charged hydrogen bonds and pi-pi interactions. This assembly is stable even in polar solvents because of its charged hydrogen-bond nature. Helical arrangement of the complex is confirmed by its crystal structure. A solution structure is assigned to the D(3) isomer corresponding to the solid-state structure by temperature-dependent (1)H NMR experiments.

Carbohydrate recognition by porphyrin-based molecularly imprinted polymers.

[structure: see text] Porphyrin-based molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared for carbohydrate recognition. A urea-appended porphyrin functional monomer was utilized to provide complementary functionality and quality binding sites throughout the polymer. Each porphyrin-based polymer demonstrates high affinity and differential selectivity for closely related carbohydrates that correlate to the structure of the template used in the imprinting process.

Molecular tripods showing fluorescence enhancement upon binding to streptavidin.

We introduce a new approach to biotin-streptavidin assays based on a molecular tripod which consists of biotin, a fluorophore, and a quencher. The interaction between streptavidin and molecular tripods perturbs the ground-state quencher-fluorophore dimeric conformation in the absence of streptavidin and diminishes the intrinsic self-quenching of a quencher-fluorophore pair. The emission intensity of the molecular tripods plus streptavidin is 3.5-5.2 times that of molecular tripods in the absence of streptavidin.

Dynamic equilibrium between a supramolecular capsule and bowl generated by inter- and intramolecular metal clipping.

The metal-induced self-assembly of a resorcin[4]arene derivative 1 that has four pyridine units as pendent groups and two equivalents of [M(dppp)(OTf)(2)] (M=Pd, Pt) results in a dynamic equilibrium between an interclipped supramolecular capsule 3 and an intraclipped bowl 4 in nitromethane, although the interclipped capsule 3 is formed as a sole adduct in chloroform/methanol and the intraclipped bowl 4 is formed exclusively in an aqueous phase. This demonstrates how metal-induced self-assembly can be tuned by subtle changes in the solvent system. The coexistence of the two structures in nitromethane was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and coldspray ionization mass spectrometry (CSI-MS). The crystal structure of the interclipped capsule 3 b, which is composed of two units of ligand 1 and four Pt(II) ions, reveals the capsule cavity to have nanoscale dimensions of 15x20 A. NMR spectra show that the dynamic equilibrium between 3 and 4 is dependent on concentration and temperature. Temperature-dependent (1)H NMR spectroscopy was carried out from 273 to 343 K to verify the thermodynamic parameters that control the dynamic equilibrium process; the conversion from the interclipped supramolecular capsule 3 a to the intraclipped bowl 4 a is entropically favored and enthalpically disfavored. The rotational barrier of the restricted rotation of pyridine units in the intraclipped bowl 4 was determined by line-shape analysis.

Versatile formation of [2]catenane and [2]pseudorotaxane structures; threading and noncovalent stoppering by a self-assembled macrocycle.

A self-assembled dimeric macrocycle between 4,4'-bis(4-pyridylmethoxy)biphenyl (L) and (en)Pd(NO(3))(2) was constructed, and its interactions with cyclodextrins of different cavity size resulted in the formation of [2]catenane and [2]pseudorotaxane systems, respectively. The structures were identified by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and cold spray ionization mass (CSI-MS) spectrometry.

Modulation of a supramolecular bowl and pot by changing solvent systems and/or metal/ligand ratios.

A resorcin[4]arene-based ligand 2 a with four pyrimidine substituents at the upper rim was synthesized, and the generation of different metal-mediated superstructures from the same ligand and metal ions utilizing the unfavorable incorporation of the third and fourth Pd(II) ions to ligand 2 a was investigated. The supramolecular bowl 3 a, which comes from a 1:2 combination of ligand 2 a and [Pd(en)(NO(3))(2)], was obtained in water even though excess of Pd(II) complexes were employed. By adding methanol, the supramolecular pot 4 gradually formed, which was the major product when the ratio of mixed solvent reached methanol/water=5:1 (v/v). Host-guest complexation phenomena of 3 a toward several aromatic carboxylates were demonstrated by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and by (1)H NMR spectroscopy; both the enthalpy gain from electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, and the entropy gain from desolvation cooperatively contribute to the binding of anionically charged guests. The crystal structure of supramolecular pot 4 shows direct evidence for the hydrogen bonding between water and the aromatic pi electrons in the solid state. The modulation between supramolecular bowl 3 a and pot 4 was also made possible by changing the metal/ligand ratios in aqueous methanol solution as well as by varying the water content of the mixed solvent.

Ion pair recognition by Zn-porphyrin/crown ether conjugates: visible sensing of sodium cyanide.

Synthesis and complexation behavior of ditopic neutral receptors composed of both a Lewis-acidic binding site (zinc porphyrin moiety) and a Lewis-basic binding site (crown ether moiety) are reported; the receptors bound only NaCN in a ditopic fashion with a color change, and in contrast other sodium salts bound to the receptors in a monotopic fashion without a color change.
