Copper(II) hexaaza macrocyclic binuclear complexes obtained from the reaction of their copper(I) derivates and molecular dioxygen.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out for a series of Cu(I) complexes bearing N-hexadentate macrocyclic dinucleating ligands and for their corresponding peroxo species (1c-8c) generated by their interaction with molecular O2. For complexes 1c-7c, it has been found that the side-on peroxodicopper(II) is the favored structure with regard to the bis(mu-oxo)dicopper(III). For those complexes, the singlet state has also been shown to be more stable than the triplet state. In the case of 8c, the most favored structure is the trans-1,2-peroxodicopper(II) because of the para substitution and the steric encumbrance produced by the methylation of the N atoms. Cu(II) complexes 4e, 5e, and 8e have been obtained by O2 oxidation of their corresponding Cu(I) complexes and structurally and magnetically characterized. X-ray single-crystal structures for those complexes have been solved, and they show three completely different types of Cu(II)2 structures: (a) For 4e, the Cu(II) centers are bridged by a phenolate group and an external hydroxide ligand. The phenolate group is generated from the evolution of 4c via intramolecular arene hydroxylation. (b) For 5e, the two Cu(II) centers are bridged by two hydroxide ligands. (c) For the 8e case, the Cu(II) centers are ligated to terminally bound hydroxide ligands, rare because of its tendency to bridge. The evolution of complexes 1c-8c toward their oxidized species has also been rationalized by DFT calculations based mainly on their structure and electrophilicity. The structural diversity of the oxidized species is also responsible for a variety of magnetic behavior: (a) strong antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling with J = -482.0 cm(-1) (g = 2.30; rho = 0.032; R = 5.6 x 10(-3)) for 4e; (b) AF coupling with J = -286.3 cm(-1) (g = 2.07; rho = 0.064; R = 2.6 x 10(-3)) for 5e; (c) an uncoupled Cu(II)2 complex for 8e.

Fine-tuning the electronic properties of highly stable organometallic Cu(III) complexes containing monoanionic macrocyclic ligands.

A family of highly stable organometallic Cu(III) complexes with monoanionic triazamacrocyclic ligands (L(i)) with general formula [CuL(i)]+ have been prepared and isolated, and their structural, spectroscopic, and redox properties thoroughly investigated. The HL(i) ligands have been designed in order to understand and quantify the electronic effects exerted by electron donor and electron-withdrawing groups on either the aromatic ring or the central secondary amine or on both. In the solid state the Cu(III) complexes were mainly characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, whereas in solution their structural characterization was mainly based on 1H NMR spectroscopy given the diamagnetic nature of the d(8) square-planar Cu(III) complexes. Cyclic voltammetry together with 1H NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy have allowed us to quantify the electronic effects exerted by the ligands on the Cu(III) metal center. A theoretical analysis of this family of Cu(III) complexes has also been undertaken by DFT calculations to gain a deeper insight into the electronic structure of these complexes, which has in turn allowed a greater understanding of the nature of the UV/Vis transitions as well as the molecular orbitals involved.

Magnetism of cyano-bridged hetero-one-dimensional Ln3+-M3+ complexes (Ln3+ = Sm, Gd, Yb; M3+ = FeLS, Co).

The reaction of Ln(NO(3))(3).aq with K(3)[Fe(CN)(6)] or K(3)[Co(CN)(6)] and 2,2'-bipyridine in water led to five one-dimensional complexes: trans-[M(CN)(4)(mu-CN)(2)Ln(H(2)O)(4) (bpy)](n)().XnH(2)O.1.5nbpy (M = Fe(3+) or Co(3+); Ln = Sm(3+), Gd(3+), or Yb(3+); X = 4 or 5). The structures for [Fe(3)(+)-Sm(3+)] (1), [Fe(3)(+)-Gd(3+)] (2), [Fe(3)(+)-Yb(3+)] (3), [Co(3)(+)-Gd(3+)] (4), and [Co(3)(+)-Yb(3+)] (5) have been solved; they crystallize in the triclinic space P1 and are isomorphous. The [Fe(3+)-Sm(3+)] complex is a ferrimagnet, its magnetic studies suggesting the onset of weak ferromagnetic 3-D ordering at 3.5 K. The [Fe(3+)-Gd(3+)] interaction is weakly antiferromagnetic. The isotropic nature of Gd(3+) allowed us to evaluate the exchange interaction (J = 0.77 cm(-)(1)).

Oxamato-bridged trinuclear NiIICuIINiII complexes: a new (NiIICuIINiII)2 hexanuclear complex and supramolecular structures. Characterization and magnetic properties.

Eight oxamato-bridged heterotrinuclear Ni(II)Cu(II)Ni(II) complexes of formula ([Ni(H(2)O)(dpt)](2)(mu-Cu(H(2)O)(opba)))(ClO(4))2 (1), ([Ni(H(2)O)(dien)](2)(mu-Cu(pba)))(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O (2), ([Ni(H(2)O)(Medpt)](2)(mu-Cu(OHpba)))(ClO(4))(2).4H(2)O (3), ([Ni(H(2)O)(dien)](2)(mu-Cu(Me(2)pba)))(ClO(4))(2).2.5H(2)O (4), ([Ni(H(2)O)(dpt)](2)(mu-Cu(Me(2)pba)))(ClO(4))(2).2H(2)O (5), ([Ni(H(2)O)(dien)](2)(mu-Cu(OHpba)))(ClO(4))(2).4H(2)O (6), ([Ni(2)(dpt)(2)(mu-Cu(H(2)O)(pba))](2)(mu-N(3))(2))Na(2)(ClO(4))(4).6H(2)O (7), and ([Cu(H(2)O)(2)(dpt)Ni(2)(H(2)O)(dpt)(2)](mu-H(2)Me(2)pba(2-)))(ClO(4))(4).3H(2)O (8) in which opba = o-phenylenbis(oxamato), pba = 1,3-propylenebis(oxamato), OHpba = 2-hydroxy-1,3-propylenebis(oxamato), Me(2)pba = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylenbis(oxamato), dpt = 3,3'-diaminodipropylamine, dien = 2,2'-diaminodiethylamine, and Medpt = 3,3'-diamino-N-methyldipropylamine were synthesized and characterized. The crystal structures of 1, 7, and 8 were solved. For complex 1, the trinuclear entities are linked by hydrogen bonds forming a one-dimensional system, and for complex 8, the presence of van der Waals interactions gives a one-dimensional system, too. For complex 7, the trinuclear entities are self-assembled by azido ligands, given a hexanuclear system; each of these hexanuclear entities are self-assembled through two [Na(O)(3)(H(2)O)(3)] octahedral-sharing one-edge entities, given a one-dimensional system. The magnetic behavior of complexes 2-7 was investigated by variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. Complexes 2-6 exhibit the minimum characteristic of this kind of polymetallic species with an irregular spin state structure. The Jvalue through the oxamato bridge varied between -88 cm(-1) (for 6) and -111.2 cm(-1) (for 5). For complex 7, the values obtained were J(1) = -101.7 cm(-1) (through the oxamato ligand) and J(2) = -3.2 cm(-1) (through the azido ligand).

Synthesis and characterization of heterodinuclear Ln(3+)-Fe3+ and Ln(3+)-Co3+ complexes, bridged by cyanide ligand (Ln3+ = lanthanide ions). Nature of the magnetic interaction in the Ln(3+)-Fe3+ complexes.

The reaction of Ln(NO3)3.aq with K3[Fe(CN)6] or K3[Co(CN)6] in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) led to 25 heterodinuclear [Ln(DMF)4(H2O)3(mu-CN)Fe(CN)5].nH2O and [Ln(DMF)4(H2O)3(mu-CN)Co(CN)5].nH2O complexes (with Ln = all the lanthanide(III) ions, except promethium and lutetium). Five complexes (Pr(3+)-Fe3+), (Tm(3+)-Fe3+), (Ce(3+)-Co3+), (Sm(3+)-Co3+), and (Yb(3+)-Co3+) have been structurally characterized; they crystallize in the equivalent monoclinic space groups P21/c or P21/n. Structural studies of these two families show that they are isomorphous. This relationship in conjunction with the diamagnetism of the Co3+ allows an approximation to the nature of coupling between the iron(III) and the lanthanide(III) ions in the [Ln(DMF)4(H2O)3(mu-CN)Fe(CN)5].nH2O complexes. The Ln(3+)-Fe3+ interaction is antiferromagnetic for Ln = Ce, Nd, Gd, and Dy and ferromagnetic for Ln = Tb, Ho, and Tm. For Ln = Pr, Eu, Er, Sm, and Yb, there is no sign of any significant interaction. The isotropic nature of Gd3+ helps to evaluate the value of the exchange interaction.

New oxamidato-bridged Cu(II)-Ni(II) complexes: supramolecular structures with thiocyanate ligands and hydrogen bonds. Magnetostructural studies: DFT calculations.

Four new supramolecular compounds of Cu(II)-Ni(II) have been synthesized and characterized: [Cu(Me(2)oxpn)Ni(mu-NCS)(H(2)O)(tmen)](2)(ClO(4))(2) (1), [Cu(Me(2)oxpn)Ni(mu-NCS)(H(2)O)(tmen)](2)(PF(6))(2) (2), [Cu(oxpn)Ni(mu-NCS)(NCS) (tmen)](n) (3), and [Cu(Me(2)oxpn)Ni(mu-NCS)(NCS)(tmen)](n) (4), where oxpn = N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)oxamidate, Me(2)oxpn = N,N'-bis(3-amino-2,2'-dimethylpropyl)oxamidate, and tmen = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine. Their crystal structures were solved. Complexes 1 and 2 have the same tetranuclear cationic part but a different counteranion. The cationic part consists of two [Cu(Me(2)oxpn)Ni] moieties linked by SCN(-) bridged ligands and intra-tetranuclear hydrogen bonds. In the case of complex 3, a two-dimensional system was built, the thiocyanate ligand linking the dinuclear units gives a chain, and the chains are linked together by hydrogen bonds; intrachain hydrogen bonds are also present. For complex 4, the thiocyanate ligands produce intermolecular linkages between the dinuclear entities, giving a one-dimensional system; intrachain hydrogen bonds are also present. The magnetic properties of the four complexes were studied by susceptibility measurements vs temperature. DFT calculations were made to study the contribution of the SCN(-) and hydrogen bond bridges in the magnetic coupling.

New oxamato-bridged trinuclear Cu(II)-Cu(II)-Cu(II) complexes with hydrogen-bond supramolecular structures: synthesis and magneto-structural studies.

Three oxamato-bridged copper(II) complexes of formula [(Cu(H(2)O)(tmen)Cu(tmen))(mu-Cu(H(2)O)(Me(2)pba))](n)((PF(6))(2))(n).2nH(2)O (1), [(Cu(H(2)O)(tmen)Cu(NCS)(tmen))(mu-Cu(H(2)O)(Me(2)pba))](2)(ClO(4))(2).4H(2)O (2), and [(Cu(H(2)O)(tmen)Cu(NCS)(tmen))(mu-Cu(H(2)O)(Me(2)pba))](2)(PF(6))(2).4H(2)O (3), where Me(2)pba = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylenebis(oxamato) and tmen = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine, have been synthesized and characterized. Their crystal structures were solved. Complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1), with a = 15.8364(3) A, b =8.4592(2) A, c = 15.952 A, beta = 101.9070(10) degrees, and Z = 2. Complex 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, with a = 6.69530(10) A, b = 18.2441(3) A, c = 31.6127(5) A, beta = 90.1230(10) degrees, and Z = 4. Complex 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, with a = 6.68970(10) A, b = 18.150 A, c = 32.1949(4) A, beta = 90.0820(10) degrees, and Z = 4. The three complexes have a central core in common: a trinuclear Cu(II) complex with the two terminal Cu(II) ions blocked by N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine. The structure of complex 1 consists of trinuclear cationic entities connected by hydrogen bonds to produce a supramolecular one-dimensional array. The structure of complexes 2 and 3 consist of trinuclear cationic entities linked by pairs by hydrogen bonds between the water molecule of the central Cu(II) and one oxygen atom of the oxamato ligand of the neighboring entity, forming a hexanuclear complex. The magnetic properties of the three complexes were studied by susceptibility vs temperature measurement. For complexes 1-3 the fit was made by the irreducible tensor operator (ITO). The values obtained were J(1) = -386.48 cm(-1) and J(2) = 1.94 cm(-1) for 1, J(1) = -125.77 cm(-1) and J(2) = 0.85 cm(-1) for 2, and J(1) = -135.50 cm(-1) and J(2) = 0.94 cm(-1) for 3. In complex 1, the coordination polyhedron of the terminal Cu(II) atoms can be considered as square pyramidal; the apical positions are filled by the oxygen atom from a water molecule in the former and a F atom of the hexafluorophosphate anion in the latter showing a quasi-planar [Cu(CuMe(2)pba)Cu] network. For complexes 2 and 3, the square pyramidal environment of the terminal Cu(II) ions was strongly modified. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the longest distance (apical) in complexes with oxamato derivatives and bidentate amines as blocking ligands has been reported in one of the oxamato arms. The great difference in J(1) values between 1 and the other two complexes is interpreted as an orbital reversal of the magnetic orbitals of the terminal Cu(II) ions in 2 and 3.

Synthesis and characterization of [Cu(Me2oxpn)Ni(NO2)(tmen)](ClO4): a single ferrimagnetic dinuclear CuII-NiII complex acting as weak molecule-based magnet.

The new heterodinuclear complex [Cu(Me2oxpn)Ni(NO2)(tmen)](ClO4), that exhibits strong antiferromagnetic intramolecular coupling between CuII and NiII ions (ferrimagnetic behavior), shows ferromagnetic ordering at low temperature, due likely to a small canting phenomenon; it is one of the very few compounds made from isolated molecules that lead to cooperative magnetic behavior.

Barium Templating Schiff-Base Lateral Macrobicycles.

Schiff-base lateral macrobicycles containing two different binding units, a rigid and unsaturated N(2)X set (X: N, O) and a flexible and cyclic N(2)O(n)() set, linked by two aromatic bridges, have been prepared by reaction of the appropriate bibracchial diamines N,N'-bis(aminobenzyl)-diaza-crown and diformyl precursors in the presence of Ba(II) as templating agent. The expected cryptands do not form in the absence of the cation; the presence of this metal ion is necessary to orient the diamine precursor in a syn conformation. Comparison of the X-ray crystal structures of the barium complex of the bibracchial diamine N,N'-bis(2-aminobenzyl)-1,10-diaza-15-crown-5 and the barium complex of the cryptand derived from it incorporating a pyridine unit indicates that the encapsulation of the metal ion is clearly more effective in the case of the cryptand. The coordination of Ba(II) ion to the pyridine nitrogen atom promotes the displacement of the metal into the cavity of the cryptand as well as important changes in the conformation of the crown unit, although the fold of the pendant arms remains practically unchanged. The cryptands reported constitute the first example of a novel family of macrobicycles.
